My Dad was a mechanic for John Deere in the 1950's before he went to farming in Eastern Washington State in 1959. I remember as a kid when he brought home a brand new 830D and plowed our pasture up with it. Over the years he owned an "A" a 40, a 60 a 620 a 730 a 4020 and a 4520. Our farm had a D14, D17, D19, and a 190 XT. One of our neighbors had a D21. The XT was boosted by turbo to 140 hp. It was bought with a 6-bottom plow, and then another bottom was added, which was now a 7-bottom plow. When you lifted the plow out of the ground, the beam swayed. The Ford 8600 also had a 7-bottom plow. The XT tended to run hot, a mechanic from Rockport looked at it and called a blockman from Franklin IN. The upper trim pieces on each side of the hood were taken off which fixed the problem. The later XT's were designed without the trim pieces. The same mechanic was on a D19 with narrow front end. He was driving in Rockport full throttle and started hitting rough places in the road, which started the tractor bouncing, the bouncing worsen and flipped the tractor backwards killing him instantly. We always had wide front ends for this reason. Thank you for the trip down memory lane with the video.

@@bradhaenitsch1145 We had a D19 gas with a 4 bottom mounted plow. It followed the furrow very easily, but it did like to drink the fuel. We also had 2 190xt's with 5 bottom semi-mounted plows. They were hard to get to pull straight. We were an AC farm since the dealer was in our town. Dad started with a 1942 WC then a WD. His last tractor was a 1967 190XT. My brothers and I bought a D17, D19, another 190XT, a 7045, 7060, 7580, 6080, 8050, and 8070.

In this video, my favorite tractor is the John Deere 5010. I first read about it back in 1962 when I was a 10 year old kid. When the article said that the tractor had 121 horsepower, I was really fascinated. Needless to say, but 121 horsepower back in 1962 was certainly the big boss. As always, thanks for showing.

The 5010 is a beast. It was big time farming in the 60’s. I felt the same way in 1995 when the 225 hp 8400 came out. It was just so big. Same hp as the 1975 8630 4wd.

Quite a few neat memories in this video! According to my Dad, my Grandpa had a D 17 (although it might have been before my time, as Grandpa retired when I was only about 5 or 6, so I only have a very vague recollection of a couple of tractors parked in his shed), along with a few other AC tractors during his time. The JD 4020 was also one of the first tractors I drove when helping some local farmers pull gravity wagons, as well as a 460 when helping out another farmer in my early teens. This was a really fun video to watch! Thank you!

I've enjoyed this video most of all recent. Just love the old iron. I've never farmed but I was an OTR/OO for 50 years and I've traversed those same fields you feature in your videos so often. Iowa, Indiana Ohio , Montana, Kansas......I road back and forth East and West ...North and South and a lot of in between. I love the old iron. I amazed at how much they have progressed over the years. I'm also one of the bull headed people who still understand how the price of farm equipment doesn't drastically increase the price of food. if they still till the same acreage their fathers and grandfathers plowed then I don't see how $300K or more don't affect the price of say corn compared to 40 years ago when the machine that plowed that same acreage oboy cost say $11,000K??? In the store a few minutes ago. $2.69 for a head of lettuce.$8.35 for a small tray of stew meat. We may all have to start farming to survive!

I guess you could have done more things with 1 $ in the past than today. Not only because things are more expensive, but because the value of 1 $ is not equivalent. In a video about the Big Bud 16v 747, BigTractorPower said it costed 300 000 $ (if i remember well) when it was produced, the equivalent of 1 000 000 $ today. I hope my english is good enough as i'm french. When my mother started to work, in the 60's, she earned 600 F (Francs), something like 100 €. And it was not that bad. Today, the minimum salary in France is about 1300 € (approximately 7800 F !). And with this money, you won't do a lot. Here, in France, and in Europe, prices are going high since COVID. I don't know how it is in the US, but i hope it's better than here. All the best to you. 🙂

Great video Jason. I saw a couple things I haven't seen too often--front fenders on a 2WD and Mud flaps on a tractor. That isn't to say they aren't necessary. Liked the narrow front big tractors.

The loose gravel roads in this area make some protraction necessary from stones on paint and windows.

I am originally from Sumner, IA, and my dad had a '59 Case 800 diesel, case-o- matic and a 4-16 trail type plow and it was one nice setup to plow with! I lost track of the tractor, it was sold at auction and my brother said somebody north of West Union bought it!

Did Allis offer Narrow Front after that series?
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a One Ninety XT. The 185 may have been offered as a narrow front into the 70’s. The One Ninety XT would have been one of the last AC’s to offer a Tri cycle front end.

Some of the short runs were because a newer model replaced the tractor. The Deere 4520 was built two years then upgraded to a 4620. The AC D17 was built 10 years. There was a Series I, II, III and IV. Each was built about 2 years.

Kind of hard to say (without the paperwork) that the 4230 was the 'last' tricycle front end produced, as it was not that much work to change out the front ends (4 bolts, IIRC), between a single front wheel, WFE, or the NF. Also, the JD Model "A" shown as being 27 HP, was, as the shifting box (square) as a 1950-1952 year, which had 38 HP on the belt, and 35 HP on the drawbar.
@bigtractorpower

I am not saying this is the last 4230 narrow front ever. I am stating the 4230 was the last NF model from Deere.
