This is an amazing early video that Spike Lee directed at the Gleasons Gym in NY. The video was shot in 1 day and Ms. Chapman was nervous when she shot. She really only communicated w/ Spike and took his direction to the t. Personally I got the feeling Tracy didn't realize her beauty- - -I wanted to go up to her and tell her she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Beyond Dark Chocolate Beauty. Notwithstanding her words had the power to crack the earth and the song is the rage a black person feels at the height of injustice. Born to fight. Director of Photography: Ernest Dickerson.

When I first heard this tune, it touched the inner part of my soul! It was like the ancestors were speaking to me through her and telling me to don't give in or up to this corrupt system! The struggle continues...

Tracy Chapman grew up an eclectic, dark-skinned Black girl in a poor, Ohio neighborhood. So did I. It doesn't seem like she was accepted much growing up ❤️

Me too. And that was back home in Congo (Africa). That's how loved and famous she was. I'm not sure if Tracy knows it or not. I used to listen to her back to back and knew to sing her songs as a teenager although a French speaker back then. And my brother used to take the boombox to take a shower 😆 We just loved her in my family. My siblings and I, especially my elder brother and I, were so fond of her music ❤🧡💙💚💛💜🤎🤍 I remember the first time I brought The "Crossroads" album home. My brother jumped when he listened to "Subcity", and said, "is it her new album? Woooooowww..." Beautiful memories... 🥰 Love you, Tracy 💝

I love this song , I showed it. To my husband and he heRt failure because she says turn int the white mans drone. We are from ca. Were we are the minority and there was just a rally up at Berkeley that really made him mad and he couldn’t get past it. I tried to tell him this is not a white against black song. This is about all oppression by any stupid ignorant people that oppress others. He always feels as a white man he is 7nder attack for things he has no control over things that happen generations before we were born. We are a mixed family our own family is mixed races but my husband second is white European. First generation American his father and mother both fled Hungary during ww2, when the communist conquered their country. He gets so worked up and angry if he sees a young black man scream about what is owed to him because his great great grandfather was a slave. In America now everyone can educate themselves and strive to be better. I am not saying a black won’t get pulled over for being black. God I live in the Bay Area Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose. I just wish people would educate themselves and feel compassion and empathy for others. He’s past the young black men yelling but not doing. Now the fight is different Muslim vs Christian. It’s the Middle East that scares him. For once black and white have something to fight together against. Personally I am a nurse I don’t care if your white black purple yellow or green. I would take a baby of every color if I could. We are all born into this world we come in the same way and we die just the same. I am currently working hospice and I tell you it doesn’t matter if the mother or father that is dying is white black brown or yellow, they all feel pain the same, the families all grieve the same. People are ignorant and stupid and it makes me very sad and like you Tracy I too am a fighter. I’ve been knocked down so many times I can’t count but I get up and fight for my right to be me. Thank You Tracy !!! Can not believe I never heard this song it’s one of my favorites. But. Like I used to sing for you. Tracy you can sing anytime. Do you know emojis won’t let you change the color once you use one I was going to give a thumbs up in every color. Won’t do it.ughhh
