The tradescantia sillamontana is an interesting vining plant, that is the desert version of the famous tradescantia nanouk or zebrine. This species has adapted to live in desert-like conditions of Mexico, allowing it to evolve thick leaves with very fuzzy leaves which it is prized for. In this video I share the care tips and propagate it in different potting mix, showing you updates at the end. Tradescantias are not beginner plants, and require constant pruning and propagating for a stylish look.

I’m surprised you wouldn’t recommend this for beginners. Yes you have to propagate them, but they are the easiest plants to propagate by far!

Haha their fuzzy stem means they can rot quite easily. Difficult for some beginners

I have several of these and they love full sun. They stay green in low light and deep purple with short nodes in full sun. I live in the Deep South in the United States.

My mother in law have this in a big pot. It stays outside, receiving full direct sun during hot summer months ...it will flower when fall approaches, it will slowly die back when winter is approaching but then again its starts to revive itself during late spring. I think this is a perennial. It survived snowy conditions, pot was covered with snow. But when summer is near, you can see new growth on it. Amazing!

Delightful and informative video! I got one of these a couple years ago and have been taking care of it without any research- just putting it outside in the spring and letting it do its thing, then cutting it back and taking it inside around first frost. (USDA Zone 5). But I've brought it in without trimming it back this year (caught it before it was frost-damaged) and thought it was about time to look into propagation. 😁 About the pests, we have spider mites and aphids in the garden. Though our cobweb plant was sitting right under an infested pepper plant, I didn't see any signs of pests on it. The only thing I've seen are ants, taking advantage of the nectar from late-season blooms. :)

Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into this educational purpose and sharing with all of us 😃 I have grown mine from a small cutting gift from a friend and when it started to bend from its weight, I tied it on a chop stick. I live in Greece and I have it under direct sunlight watering it as soon as it gets completely dry. I have it for almost a year without pruning because that main stem on the stick has shout out so many little stems along its height as well as from bottom. I may prune it soon though cause it's starting to get heavy 🙄🔜❤️

In nature they flop on the ground from their own weight and propagate themselves that way. This is the same with all tradescantias unfortunately hence we have to keep propagating them to have them look amazing

Watch me as I watch all of this guy's videos in a row. You are super informative, many channels go " Hey look at this super expensive plant" but I love that you actually go into how to care for them. I learned so much and I'm already an experienced plant owner. If you get the time could you please do a video on how to propagate rhapidaphoras (hayii, crypto, tetras, etc) ? That's the main thing I keep killing 😫

They have grown and flowered prolifically and I am just delighted. It is such a beautiful show of pink and silver-grey when you walk to my front door. I am delighted. So what do you do when it gets super leggy? I have a REALLY leggy one and I don't want to lose it, but I think it needs pruned back a LOT. Will it be able to withstand that?

Oh yes they can withstand it so long as you water it a lot less after the prune. You can propagate the stem into many plants like I shown in the video

You could water the plant with insecticide of your choice. Neem oil solution or chemicals. The plant roots will take up the compound and up to the leaves. When the pests consume the leaves they will ingest the compounds

Any updates on why the leaves turn pink? I recently purchased a "white velvet". Small, but a local greenhouse was closing permanently so I rescued a few Plants that were on their death beds. 😵 the white velvet is small but in the 3ish weeks of having her (my plants have gender & some have names too. Don't judge😅😅). About 3-4 leaves have turned pink . 1 leaf is a funky purple & is droopy, obvious dead, leaf.. But the pink are vibrant, perky, and healthy looking. So I'm wondering if the pink is normal? Google results say its due to a lack DefIciency of some sort if i remember correctly...

If they have good airflow and very good light they could potentially get away with it 😀 but its not advisable to do so in most of our home growing conditions
