I was adopted from China when I was 6 and I remember one of the workers at the orphanage playing this song all the time and it just reminded me of her because she was my favorite care taker there, I almost cried listening to this

Well done. My mum would have loved to hear this, she loved zhou xuan. She’s not around anymore to hear it so i listened again for her. You made me cry and smile at the same time. I will watch a few more times of course .....

She lived in China and is currently married to a Chinese man. According to her own story, she fell in love with our Chinese culture while she was in China, and now she not only speaks putonghua fluently, and is learning Cantonese, but her ideological and cultural beliefs are all leaning to the East as well. When someone is Chinese on the outside and Western on the inside, we call him a banana, haha. 雪莲 is pretty much white on the outside and yellow on the inside! What fruit is that?? She is so charming and cheerful, you can't help but love her!

Colour/Race has nothing to do with ones capability to learn. Any human being can learn any language.

@@kyngnick8723 you're right, but the "older" we get the harder it gets to learn something new to our usual environment. Not for everyone, of course, but it happens quite often, because we tend to lose some "elasticity": mnemonic, vocal (some kind of singing or some sounds in a language) and so on. Sometimes it's simply hard to be able to really get into other cultures. Oftentimes when we "learn" someone else's culture it's a "fake" because we aren't in the "right" place/time, we don't have native teachers and so on... It's possible to learn almost everything (even by yourself), but sometimes it's just hard and usually it gets harder

I appreciate the bilingual lyrics on the screen. Even though I have heard this song covered by many artists before (I have a basic comprehension of Mandarin), I never got a deep understanding of the sentiment behind the song.

Beautiful. I love to listen to traditional music all around the world. Chinese opera and folk music is among my favorite. This is beautiful and as others have said, if I close my eyes, this sounds authentic. (And I hear quite a lot of Chinese music.) Thank you for this!

I'm gonna forward all your singing videos to my 77yo Chinese mother. I'm what you'll call a banana in Malaysia. A Chinese that can't read/write Chinese and can only speak very basic dialects like Hakka, Cantonese & Mandarin. After watching a few of your videos I'm feeling I should really make some effort in learning to read & speak Mandarin. Love what you're doing! Keep it up!

Mandarin is actually Han language deteriorated by Manchurians which is similar to gwai lo speaking Cantonese.

@@YamamotoKazuo It's more complicated than that. Mandarin, or Guan Hua, literally means "officers' speech". It started in Yuan Dynasty (Mongol ruled dynasty), and so it has many North Asian elements in it. In Qing Dynasty (Manchu ruled dynasty), it is heavily affected by Manchurian language, and after that by many more foreign languages. So it really is more like a creole language, while genetically it is Sinitic or Han.

This is what Embracing ones culture is, you sing in a different language so beautifully, not where people call you out because of “cultural appreciation.” I find that term so stupid.

It makes sense why you believe it is stupid because you have the term wrong. You are right about appreciating a culture and doing it well. People have an issue with cultural appropriation (something completely different) where you bastardize someone else’s culture for profit. This woman clearly took the time to learn Chinese culture and put quality in her work.

This is not cultural appropriation. She is paying homage to Chinese by learning it so well. The sincerest form of flattery is imitation, etc. She is almost a Chinese woman at heart after living in China and now being married to a Chinese husband. Either way, she is very talented. She sings so well, and her putonghua is nearly flawless.
