I know how to dance this, so let me explain a bit of the meaning for other viewers. It is the 4 seasons of Kyoto they start off describing the spring time. They talk about seeing the blooming trees and looking at the mountain (higashi Yama 1:04 here the fans held in this way mimic the shape of the mountain peak and the ladies shield their eyes from the sun as they look out on the scenery.) they also sing about “yozakura” which is spec the cherry blossom trees at night. 1:36 the ladies catch a petal on their fan and pick it up and let it float away. The next “verse” then describe how a samurai carrying two swords goes to a tea house etc. 1:50 the ladies hold their folded fan to mimic one sword as they put their other hand underneath to display carrying two swords

Yeah but the thing is that they dedicated their lives ONLY to what you wrote. They dont even get taught regular subjects like math and english. Geishas have to be amazing at every single thing they are taught and dance is no exception.

This isn't even true. Nowadays you can't even become a maiko until you're at least 17 years old, when you've finished high school. It's been that way since the 1950's/60's.

+Shakir Shafiq Zainuddin They're all dressed for summer. ^^ The dance portrays the transition between the different seasons. Their kimono ensemble wouldn't be specific for a certain dance unless it was a huge performance, not a private party ^^ But I could see why the colors would lead you to believe that but the dance demonstrates the story more than the kimono ^^.

Japanese are so artistic, in a degree it's hard to comprehend. But most folk dances in Japan do not require simultaneous movement, sometimes to convey much of that natural feeling. However, i must also take into account that they are maiko's, geiko's in training, like apprentice, so, i did not expect the best performance. Afterwards, the customer in the tea house can comment on the performance to the head of the tea house, but its rude to talk while they are performing, or commenting at the front of the food when served.
@rednightingales9535
@rednightingales9535 6 жыл бұрын
Yamamoto Mamoru I must say, you aren’t really right. Not only is an apprentice geisha completely different than a maiko, but also, this is actually how the dance goes. They must keep a strait face and flowing and calculated movements. No “free” style. It’s all very exact.
@angeloflifelight
@angeloflifelight 6 ай бұрын
First line of Wikipedia "A maiko is an apprentice geisha in Kyoto" Outside of Kyoto they are called hangyoku which means half jewel, and again are trainee geisha. Before this stage is shikomi (preparation or training) and minarai (learning by observation)

Does the clothing the dancers are wearing restrict their leg movement to an extent? Also was this style of clothing commonly worn around the time dances like this were created? I'm just thinking about how variations in clothing can affect the development of different dance styles.

@angeloflifelight
@angeloflifelight 6 ай бұрын
From what I've learned, the green is actually a first year maiko (there are two stages before maiko, geisha is mastery) Only her lower lip is painted and she has the hairpiece with silk flowers that go down to her chin. Their dance styles are obviously very different compared to other cultures and it tells a story. The one in the middle is probably the farthest in her training and the most confident, therefore seeming faster than the other two girls.

Can you elaborate on that one. The J education system is appalling and Maiko are only taught how to compliment and sweet talk rich businessmen. The Maiko don’t even have a standard bachelor degree. If you’re lucky enough to be pampered by these beauties you’ll find their conversation abilities are severely limited.
