In this video April and I are doing a traditional drum set with cut bait on the bottom. I wanted to make this video because I believe alot of anglers are still intimidated about doing this. It's really not hard at all and I give many tips in the video. Thanks for stopping by.

It's a little early still. They start showing up in good numbers around mid August. I'd go down river a little further, at least as far as blounts bay

@@patrickcotter945 You need to use a old drum rig. All the tackle shops sell them. Its the rig I'm using in this video, 1-2ounce egg weight, short leader 6", and a 8 or 9o circle hook. East Side Bait and tackle has a ton of them. This is the best rig to insure you don't gut hook the fish. Are you on instagram? If so, send me a message and we can get into some other details, good spots, etc.

Enjoying your videos. Relatively new to this area & catching one of these old drum is a bucketlist item of mine but just haven't been able to connect. Trying to learn the area & gain knowledge that will give me enough confidence to go with great expectations. Any extra tips are welcomed, not looking for a secret hole just wanting to gain a better understanding of key water features that pattern these beast, outside of chasing bait. Thanks in advance & keep those videos coming

Curious about the gear your set up with..?? 5000/6000 spinning?? Braid/flouro… They are biting down in Wilmy but not like that..!!!! Awesome to see ya back on the water!!

Hi John. My favorite reel for this right now is a 4000 penn battle. Its reasonably priced and has a great drag. I like 30lb braid. I still use some 5000s too with 30 or 40 braid.

Good video man!! I need my first bull red. What would be the 2 months you speak of. September-October. Or August-September???

Thank you. Personally I find August-September to be best for the Pamlico. But I've caught plenty in the first two weeks of October on some years.

Any harm in using spot lock instead of anchoring when your soaking bait for drum in 6 to 10 feet of water? I typically use it when sight fishing with popping corks as well.
@haltysalty7537
@haltysalty7537 Жыл бұрын
I've never done it while soaking baits. But should work okay on lighter winds

I see in the comments below that you are using 4000 size reels. What length and weight/action rod do you prefer. Thanks and great content here in these videos.

Anything from a 4000 to 6000 will get the job done. I like a 7'6" rod, medium heavy, medium fast. 30lb braid. Honestly in the past my big drum rods have been a hodge podge. Just recently I've gotten consistent with the gear described above. Better to go heavy than light. Alot of anglers will use their cobia rods.
