Today, the Catholics do the same thing by not objecting to same-sex marriage and abortion. Meanwhile, the Orthodox church respected the Christian values. There were no crusades, no witch burning, no inquisition, no castrating of homosexuals. The Orthodox church understood that it's role was to bring the sinners to Jesus and the forgive the sins of those who are sorry for sinning, not to judge the sinners. It's a crying shame some people can't distinguish between prime minister, representative, steward, vicar of Christ, and just flat out being Christ Himself. Once again, contrary to the schismatic Orthodox belief, no Catholic believes the Pope is equal to or above Christ. He is servant of the servants of God, and head-bishop of the flock of Jesus Christ. Is he subject to Christ himself, and so only one of the lesser shepherds here on earth,subject to the true Shepherd? Yes. Is he above the other shepherds below him, the rest of the flock? Yes. They aren't at odds.

The difference was that due to the belief that the Pope was the, prettty much, messenger of God on Earth he was infallible, which is not true at all. The other branches of Christianity disagree with the fact that the Church can/should be lead by one person, who has absolute power. That is because he is still a man and can still sin.

The Pope is not infallible as an individual person, but the Holy Spirit that holds the Church (and save Her till the return of Christ) is. The dogma of ``Papal Infabillity´´ hold this: the Holy Spirit will preserve the Church (He is her life and her custodian) of any mistake pronounced by the Pope (in the role of ``vicar of Christ´´ till the Parousia, as our Lord said in Mt 16, 19-21) in moral, doctrinal or dogmatical subject when, and only when, the Pope speaks ``ex-cathedra´´, not in his daily life (obviously, the Pope is a current human, a sinner as everyone, and commits mistakes; neither Catholics nor the same Pope denies this). It´s important not falling in misunderstandings of this kind. PD: English is not my native language, sorry about my mistakes.

Please, read the first Eaden's answer to Tom Landry in the fixed comment. His paragraph about "Roman Cathecism"- point number 2- should answer this misunderstanding. There, he shows the Saints and the Doctors of the Church who said hyperdulia (Veneration to Holy Mary, Mother of God) *is* necessary for salvation. Sorry for the bad english, sir.
