Have to disagree. The law only matters when applied equally. Escalating penalties for repeat offenders I can agree with, fining someone more just because they make more money is not fair.
@HardiBacardi
@HardiBacardi 3 ай бұрын
The Finnish day fines are applied equally, it's generally their daily income divided by two per day fine. The more over the limit, the more day fines you'll receive. Therefore, the impact is the same for someone who makes $200 a day as it is for someone making $2000 a day. Meanwhile, a flat $500 ticket will impact someone making $36k a year a lot harder than someone making $360k a year.

If you make any sort of salary, you get fined for 50% of your pay for a number for some days so for serious violations with a car. The money has nothing to with it! It's just the hours of the day you spend working halved! Minor speeding and other minor violations just come with a fixed 70€ fine.

Wrong. Finnish speeding tickets are based on income AND speed. It's based on daily fines and 6€ is lowes you can get. For small exceedings you can minor offense ticket, those range from 20 to 200€ So lets say you earn 3000€/month and you get 20 days the ticket will be 900€. If you drive even faster but earn 2100€/month (and you get 30 days) it's gonna be same 900€. If you are unemployed (0 income) those fines are based on the minumum of 200€. You are also able to pay these over longer period of time without extra fees. You can apply for even a year payment plan.

the problem is that druggies etc don't have income and it takes quite a bit to rack up to get locked up, so you can rack up driving without license, under influence stuff and such quite a bit before you get actually forced to stop the behavior for a while. I think the record for that is for some guy with 110+. like, they don't have money at that point and are just on social security on base money or not even controlling that themselves, so you can't control them with money and they'd rather not lock people up since it's expensive too and the crimes they do are on the low pathetic side of things.

I once got a ticket in Québec (Canada). I was doing 140 kph in a 100 kph zone but being passed by local drivers. I was in an out-of-province registered vehicle. The Sûreté du Québec officer berated me in French for a while, then took my documents to his cruiser to write the ticket. When he returned, he gave me my docs back with the ticket and in heavily accented English emphatically said " The speed limit is in KILOMETERS - not MILES!!!" I deserved the ticket even though I was going with the flow of traffic. But his comment at the end was worth the price of admission... it was most 40 years ago and it STILL makes me chuckle...

You drove 40 kph over posted speed limit, but you just go with the flow of traffic. Police single you out because you were different (out of province), life are so unfair.

I know a guy... he was stationed in Italy when they installed speed cameras on the main highway through Napoli. In the 2 years the cameras were operational, he accrued 62 speeding tickets. The problem happened when the ticket issuing system had a serious backlog and the tickets all came in 3 bundles, with most already being past due with double fines. All in all, over 75k euro didn't get paid because he transferred back to the states.

In Slovakia most of the cops will tolerate 10 km/h over the limit. Our speed limits used to be 10km/h higher, were lowered about a decade ago, so this is something like a silent agreement between drivers and cops that we're going to stick to the "old rules".

I also support that fines should be based on income. and even better on net worth. Because some rich people, like Arnold Schwarzenegger and the late Steve Jobs, have/had a yearly income of 1 Dollar. So their fines would be less than a cent. Fixed fine amounts make a crime with a fine only a crime for the poor
@aidanfriedfeld8889
@aidanfriedfeld8889 3 ай бұрын
Exactly. Where I live its 250$ the second you’re over 10mph over the limit. Which is wild because the actual limit in which you can be pulled over is 7 over or under the limit depending on circumstances. So basically if you get caught doing like 15 over the limit you could be paying a ticket close to like 500$ which can be like a third of someone’s rent. Comparatively if you run a red light it’s only 80$ for some reason which imo running a red light is way more dangerous than speeding. Also speed cameras are usually put in lower income areas sometimes as a way to subsidize infrastructure maintenance in higher income areas where they have higher taxes but lower population so the property tax isn’t enough to cover road costs and such. Super scummy.
@Hyrppa95
@Hyrppa95 3 ай бұрын
In Finland doing that is a bit more difficult, you can't get our of paying taxes but you can reduce the amoung of pay but quite a margin. Same with these fines, it is not just your salary that is counted.

friendly reminder that income based tickets are a great idea and you should not feel any worse for a rich person than you would for a normal person getting a ticket. There are many people in the world who make so much money that it would be financially useless to pick up 50k$ if it were laying on the ground, literally not worth their time and effort.

$125k fine for 25 mph over the limit in the Finnish system would mean the person is making $11.3k a day. Someone making $250 a day would pay $2750. They both pay the same percentage of their income, completely fair. Only difference being someone making $11.3k a day still has a ludicrous amount of money after paying their fine.

Most expensive speeding fine in Australia is over 45km/h in a school zone which is 40km/h. The fine is AUD$2778 6 demerit points on your license and a mandatory 6mth suspension. And that is before they try to go you using the anti hooning laws where they will also take your car and cube it and add more fines/court fees/lawyer fees etc
