In a previous video, we compared pendulum turns and trail braking to see which was faster in righthand 90 degree corner. These techniques might be very different approaches to getting the car to rotate but that doesn't mean that they can't be used together. Team O'Neil instructor Max Garneau demonstrates a scenario where a driver might combine a trail brake and a pendulum turn.

Good explanation of the technique. I'm curious, why do you guys drive in those heavy work boots? I would figure something lightweight and thin-soled like a racing shoe or trainer would help with pedal action and what have you.

But ive always had a good feeling of how to be faster on gravel im thinking about starting actuall rally but its expensive af were im from, any tips to get started? and is it too late to become a pro at age 19? I have been driving atv and cross from age 5 so i think thats were my feeling for gravel has been developed

@@damyanovasen scandi flick is basically what was demonstrated here. Load up the suspension with the brake and steering going the wrong way, throw all that potential energy into yawing the car the other way and scrub off momentum with under/neutral steer on the way out.

as a comparison, would an ebrake turn instead be faster and more consistent?
@jacobshi344
@jacobshi344 3 жыл бұрын
The objective of a pendulum turn is to get the car rotated before the corner. With this kind of turn, you're already accelerating mid corner. With the handbrake, the car is rotated much later in the corner, meaning less exit speed. Over the course of a stage, carrying more speed and hitting the gas earlier will always be faster. Handbrake is mostly used to correct mistakes, it's only faster in situations where you have to come to a complete stop.
@erty2389
@erty2389 3 жыл бұрын
Also a ebrake turn is less consistent since how much you turn on a ebrake turn depends on a million factors. Pluss you have to slow down more before the turn, and wait longer to acelerate after the turn. Its also very easy to over do it and spin
@Teamoneilrally
@Teamoneilrally 3 жыл бұрын
Hand brake turns are generally a little less predictable and not an ideal technique for an all wheel drive platform like this Subaru. Hand brake turns are also best suited to lower speed corners.

Can I do this on FWD ?? On only on AWD ? ..Cause in FWD After turning back the steering wheel I need to give gas to regain traction on the back ...if I use the brake I continue to have all the load on the front and so I don't stop sliding...someone can answer?
@ragweedmakesmesneeze
@ragweedmakesmesneeze 3 жыл бұрын
The "turn in" step is confusing to me. Based on my previous understanding of the Scandinavian Flick, plus what I can see in the video, he is clearly NOT turning IN. Rather, he throws the wheel in the opposite direction when he says "turn in," then turns it back left down the hill. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something here though?
@Teamoneilrally
@Teamoneilrally 3 жыл бұрын
The turn in references the initial l steering input to right to get the rotation started in the opposite direction of the corner. This stores up some energy so that when you turn back to the left, the car will rotate all the way around the corner. Definitely a lot of inputs in a short amount of time!
@ragweedmakesmesneeze

@@Teamoneilrally Thanks for this reply, I have another question regarding another video that Wyatt did about trail braking. In his example he executes the turn then shifts on the exit. But everything I'm learning about racing Miatas on road tracks, says the downshifting happens before the turn. Is this a difference between road/off-road racing/driving?
