Well I think I'm finally ready to test this thing out! I installed the 9 tooth sprocket, 60 tooth sprocket, TAV2 30 driver pulley, chain tensioner, and chain. In this vid I try explain, and show why a chain tensioner is needed, and show what happens if you don't use one with longer rear shocks and what could happen if your chain is too tight when suspension is fully extended. It's not pretty! I also changed out the chain tensioner spring to a heavier one and hooked it up in a slightly different way for more tension. Looks like this all should work but we'll see on the test ride! 🤞

Those chain tensioners are amongst some of the best things you can do to these bikes, and they make a few different styles but man these bikes have a lot of chain pop issues especially bikes with rear shocks, when I installed a chain tensioner it changed everything, took me a bit to find the perfect chain adjustment for it but when I did it was a complete game changer.
@bwxmoto
@bwxmoto Жыл бұрын
Yup I haven’t had one chain problem since that tensioner installation. And the 12” shocks are too long really which makes it worse. My brother even rode it for hours in the woods and stuff and he’s bigger than me - weighed over 200 lbs at the time.

Thanks for your videos they're very informative. I realize this is a year-old video but wondering if the spring you use on this chain tensioner worked out I've done mine exactly as you have done and mine seems to be too tight strangely enough. Thanks again for the great videos
@bwxmoto

Hey thanks. Yeah I ended up drilling a hole higher up on the chain tensioner arm and that helps a lot. It was too tight how I had it. I’ll have to see what’s in this video but I ended up using a metal roller and that worked way better too. But yeah, if you drill a hole higher up on the arm, it takes a lot of pressure off of the chain, but it still works great. And actually I haven’t touched it since and I’ve ridden it a lot and it just works. It’s probably time for me to take it apart and re-grease up the bearings in there and see how it’s wearing and stuff. I’ll probably do an update video on this bike soon.

Thanks! Yeah tons of fun. I actually got that on ebay I think. Kind of expensive there. Maybe some local welding or metal supply shop would be cheaper.

Thanks for sub! This is all experimental for me though.. But, I did ride it a couple times since this vid and I can say it does work! No chain crunching on the driver pulley and it doesn't fall off, also the shocks are great. Way way way better than stock. Have not felt it bottoming out at all and there's noticeably more travel and ground clearance. But I think I need stronger chain tensioner spring or hook it up so it's stretched out more. Also this chain tensioner makes more noise than I was expecting. Not sure if normal. I think I need the 8 tooth front sprocket though, and stage one. It doesn't really compare to a stage one Predator with 8t/ 60 tooth like on my EX and BT but it still climbs 100 times better than stock. Haven't done full speed GPS down hill test but did have it up to 41 MPH on flat ground. Runs good!

Hey where did you buy the spring you used for the tensioner? Do you have a length and preference of spring you used?
@bwxmoto
@bwxmoto 2 жыл бұрын
I went to Lowe's and found a few that looked right and a package of a 5 more and found one that worked. I'd buy a few and you should be able to get one to work. I think it was about 4 in long when coiled up but a shorter one could work too.

Can I suggest that you drill a second hole on the adjuster arm and just run the spring over the bar and back down. It will double your tension. I think you want it stiffer so when it’s a quicker depression of the shock the adjuster reacts faster.
@bwxmoto
@bwxmoto 3 жыл бұрын
Good idea! Yeah I’ll try it see what happens. 👍 It’s crazy how loud that thing is though. 😬. But good news is chain stays put when riding. So it is functional at least but at higher speed there’s s a pattern of loosening and tightening that I can hear. Maybe some more tension would help that. 🤷‍♂️
@dankibler4780
@dankibler4780 3 жыл бұрын
Good explanation of what happens with the chain when you Change the geometry with larger shocks. I’m assuming that if you stay with the stock shocks there will be less of a need for a tensioner? Probably something I will still do eventually but I don’t plan to change the shocks for awhile.
@bwxmoto
@bwxmoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Yeah I had problems with the stock setup though. It's worse with longer shocks though. I think ideally you'd want same or just a little longer length shock than stock but with more travel. These are 12", I'd rather have 11" shocks and they make them but they are a lot stiffer. I rode it yesterday and these feel pretty good to me and I'm about 200 lbs.

Just ordered 2 of these bikes 🤙 what's the advantage to the bigger sprocket,just more low end torque?
@bwxmoto
@bwxmoto 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely more low end grunt for climbing and acceleration. It also gives your TC belt a mechanical advantage and they last way longer. I have burnt up belts in one ride trying to go slow up hills in the woods before with even a 9t front and stock rear sprocket.. Lower final drive gear ratio allows you to crawl slower without belt burning up and climb steeper hills basically. Check my vid coming out tomorrow 👍😎

@bwxmoto
@bwxmoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@DC-gh9yv Thanks! Yup I like to run the bikes stock for a while at least to gauge what the mods do. For steep hills though the stock gearing is way too long but ok for moderately steep hills or flat ground.. Stock setup really flies going down hill though!

Gopowersports 12” shock upgrade. Not sure I would recommend them though. I think I’d try to find some shorter ones, maybe 11” or 10.5, and they have no or very little damping so they’re bouncy. Still way better than stock shocks though, but I’d like some with more damping.

Did you have a problem with the brake disc bolt head hitting the back side of the brake caliper? I can’t figure it out. The wheel will not spin

No but I think the axle spacers might be on wrong if that happens. Or could be something else I guess. Trying to think what else might cause that. 🤔

@bwxmoto 2 жыл бұрын
Oh maybe that chain tensioner bracket is reversed. That has a thick side and a thinner side. Can't remember if that would cause issues like that or not. I'd have to go look at bike but it might.

The four bolts that hold the brake disc to the wheel hub. I have the spacers on the same way they came off, exactly like yours. I did get a new wheel put on, would flipping the wheel around make a difference
