Broken Overland Trailer On White Rim Trail

Trail Mater

Жыл бұрын

Went out on the White Rim Trail to try to repair an overland camp trailer that the spindle had broken off. We took a spare trailer spindle in case we needed to Jerry rig something together. Once we got there we decided to weld the old spindle back together. We had both trucks just in case the repair wouldn't work and we had to improvise. Luckily we didn't and it pulled right out. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

I'm 82 and been a welder all my life and its jobs like this that are gratifying, and much more that it was done out in the desert away from a shop, RORY is a thinker, alway adusting to the problem and making things work, he never stops thinking, which sets him apart, great fix, I bet that trailer if it was fixed in the 50's it would still be running today, I loved it, great camera work too.

Rory what a welding job. You look professional by about 200 percent. My father, brother's, and uncle were each certified welders. Hours of welding upside down, right side up, up hill, down hill and all the tests. Not one of them could probably compare to Rory's talents. The man knows how to lay a bead. Way to go Rory.

Been on the White Trim trail 3 times in the last 7 years ( but not during Covid, when it was shut down). Decades back I was on it a few more times also. Iv'e seen rigs pulled out w/straps or ropes by someone in their group (I assume), but I've never seen someone like TM pull a spindle, (on a trailer) grind & then weld it, and then piece it back together again, so it could be pulled out. That's real 'art, mechanical prowess & know how" to pull that off. For those that have not done the loop, there is beautiful scenery on various parts of the trail route.

When I was young, sketchy was the common way to get stuff done! As I grew older (but not much wiser) I found that sketchy stuff seems to hurt more, or cost more, than just doing it right the first time. Note: sketchy stuff still gets done, just not as often or dangerous as it used to be. Old age sux.

The only advantage that anyone would have over trail mater is Matt's wrecker is heavier. So it should be able to lift more, but it's really big and heavy so that's a disadvantage. I think Rory wins hands down.

@Donna Chavez I also think Eric has a chance at the win. His big disadvantage is he spends most of his time in the woods, rather than on the rocks. But when he is in Utah, he can still get the job done without a problem. But Rory and Eric are the two that actually spend the most time in wreckers. But, who is Merlin?

Great work Team! About 15 years ago I found myself in the same situation except with a 36" Rome disk. It was early spring and the spindle broke off when they hit a huge chunk of frost. We welded the spindle back on with 6013 and then 7018 rod. We couldn't get a seal right away so my co-worker found a Tupperware lid that fit the O.D. and we trimmed the I.D. to fit. Funny thing is it lasted all summer. Just kept pumping grease in it everyday. Changed it out in the fall. Good times.

@@lutomson3496 Wheel spacers are not automatically a problem if used to fit wider wheels keeping the lever moment (or essentially the centre line of the wheel) the same as the original narrow wheels. They are a great way to facilitate the use of wheels with deeper inset on the rim, for example many front wheel drive cars have the spokes right on the outside of the wheel and rear wheel drive cars have the spokes nearer the centre line.
