Just to be clear, internal combustion is not about explosions.... its about burning. The burning of the fuel, heats the air, which increases the pressure. You do have a rapid increase of pressure in the exhaust when the exhaust valve(s) open. But its not an explosion (gas flow should be sub-sonic...)

Surprisingly the muffler doesn't obstruct much exhaust gas...the catalytic converter is the biggest obstruction
@JMar671
@JMar671 Жыл бұрын
Your answer actually is incorrect for the most part. Many dynamometer tests have proved that on today's cars, the heat generated in the catalytic converter actually causes expansion of the exhaust gases that leads to greater velocity of gases that leads to a better scavenging of the exhaust. You actually lose power by taking the catalytic converter off of most NA cars

It could be optimized for increased flow with least amounts of bends, but this one is about the cost of production and noise muffling, not performance oriented. Hard corners and design as this will change how the air moves, introduce more turbulence that improves thermal transfer witch is not desired and slows the air down creating positive pressure that does not allow engine to exhaust and vent the gasses rapidly as it could leaving performance decrease compared to better flowing exhaust.
@mattp6770
@mattp6770 Жыл бұрын
The exhausts are optimized for the best performance for the type of car we even make, some that have actuators that block the exhaust gas oem exhausts balance performance with noise reduction if you want to make noise or adjust the gas flows there are mufflers that do that.

@Adam Flannigan there's a huge difference between a resonator and a muffler. A muffler absorbs sound energy, a resonator uses sound waves to cancel sound energy. Mufflers dampen sound while resonators cancel specific frequencies and are used to prevent droning or resonance at specific points. The only similarity is they're exhaust components. Their construction, function, and purpose are completely different.

You know what would be even more restrictive and power robbing? A straight piece of pipe. Yep, straight pipe exhausts with no mufflers have more back pressure. Those chambers allow the hot high pressure pulses of gas to expand and relieve pressure. Then, some of the high pressure peaks slow down and fill in the low pressure areas between the exhaust pulses. If you do that enough, what comes out of the end of the tail pipe sounds less like a pop, pop, pop, and more like a whoosh of fast moving air.

Yeah, and it usually does a fine job. A fine job indeed. I took the rear silencer / muffler off my 74 V8, left just the resonator, and it was unbearable. Welded up a bit of exhaust tubing and put a cherry bomb glass pack on the end, much better. And that my dear friends, was with a Buick / Rover 215ci V8, image a bigger engine. Now I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, if you fancy straight piping your Buick 455 or Hemi 440, go ahead. But as someone who drove their car through London 32 miles every day to and from work, your ears will get tired of it. Glass packs are great, because at idle they're quiet, at cruise they're quiet, the noise only comes when you put your foot down, or when the glass packing has been burnt away. 😂

So...they designed it with Back Pressure? On purpose?

This is about efficiency and the more an engine can run efficient, the better gas mileage,less pollution,more power, and it's proven, you can have sound suppression without killing efficiency.

Silence by strangulation not absorption,which is the most effective way but a little more expensive to produce

I switched an old Mustang from glass packs to mufflers and I found it more comfortable without all of that noise to daily drive.

@@AbominableHuman If having a Nissan with stickers and loud mufflers means having a pair, count me out. I care about the people around me, including family and friends and pedestrians and people driving home from work.

@@jawharris putting a fart can on a rice burner isn't what i'm talking about. you being worried about everyone hearing your vehicle is pretty concerning as far as the future of mankind. sounds like low T. by the way, i drive a nissan and have owned several. i don't care what brand it is, enjoy it for what it is and stop worrying about being a nuisance to others when you're just living a normal life. i would be proud to drive anything from a honda (and i have) to a diesel armored transport (and i have).

@@jawharris I've owned and driven several Nissans and they have been just as dependable as any Toyota, Chevy, Ford, Honda... I own and have owned most all common makes and honestly if you think driving a Nissan is something to neg me on, you're a fool. It's your right to be a fool if you like.

They are trying to make some point about this being a cheap muffler. It would be nice if they showed the differences in an expensive muffler.

At 3500 rpm there isn't a noticeable power lost between muffler and straight pipe.

Not only does it muffle sound - it provides BACK PRESSURE, and is part of the design of the engine. Ask anyone who has had a hole in their muffler how much their fuel usage went up. If you are going to mock something, at least TRY understand what it does first.
