Me too, I spent the weekend filming steam locomotives in action on my local heritage railway (The Bluebell Railway) here in England. It will be a while before I can visit New Zealand again because of the virus.

I thought they were doubling the whole route to Waikanae?

Hi Antony, there are only two sections of single track remaining. The section around the Kapiti coast before Paekakarki and the last mile or so into Waikanae. I am not aware of any firm plans to double the remaining sections of single track. But I would be interested to know if there are plans to electrify the whole route between Wellington and Auckland (different voltages are not a problem in Europe) as the non electrified sections have been reduced by the extension of suburban electrification

The Wellington Metlink network is one of the most scenic commuter networks I've seen anywhere in the world, you are lucky to have it on your doorstep 😊👍

15 Is a great age. Old enough to understand, yet young enough to have most of your life ahead of you. I think the day of reckoning for NIMT electrification will come when the current electric locos are life expired.

The government of the day will have to a make a choice between removing the wires or buying new dual voltage electric locos and filling in the electrification gaps. Predicting the actions of politicians is harder than predicting the weather. I think you will see electrification completed in your life time as to remove the wires would be political suicide.
