Traveling from Los Angeles to San Francisco for the New Year’s celebration 2016. Watch the 10 hours ride on the train in around 10 minutes. For those train lovers ;)

Riding the CA trains along the coast is the best. Comfortable, no traffic, repeat..no traffic, plenty of space for work or a nap. Outlets galore.

Took this ride in 1996...The train broke down about half way and got to watch the sunset over the Pacific during the engine transfer...Ride took 15 hours L.A. To San Francisco...Great memory. #LostForWords

As a former airline employee for nearly 30 years I have travelled by air to the majority of places around the world but I have had the most exciting memories whenever I did it by rail. Slower or faster, the older or more modern they were still a good journey. Unfortunately Brazil has quit with passengers trains in the 1980's and even the old charming overnight service between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro which I have used a few times for a week end has gone!
@HenrichHipca6 жыл бұрын
No trains in Brazil WOW. I did not realize there are no trains, I mean, I have never been to Brazil. I once watched a documentary about a bus ride From Rio to Lima - Transoceânica, the world's longest bus journey, on Deutsche Welle Documentry You Tube channel, which was amazing.

The Surfliner begins in San Diego and connects with the Coast Starlight which goes all the way up to Seattle. That is a very scenic ride.

I like riding the Amtrak trains. I am not driving. I can walk around anytime I want. There is food and drink. I can get comfortable and most of all I like to just sit and watch the scenery.

I have ridden all the AMTRAK routes west of St. Louis. THe Surfliner and Coast Starlight are good rides. I have been to the L.A. train station 3 times as part of my 5 trips out west on my own and really enjoyed being there. Good Mexican restaurant across the street. Rail travel fan from St. Louis

For the record, the LA river has a very controlled flow. The flow is constricted to replenish as much groundwater as possible, so it doesn't reach the ocean unless rain or melting snow drives the flow. Edit: prior to the development of the LA flood control system in the early 20th century, the entire LA basin area would routinely flood after heavy rain seasons.

Amtrak isn't fast, but it's a still a great way to travel in the US. Stop complaining about the speed. It's comfortable, clean, a great way to see the beauty of the US as you cross it, and also a terrific way to meet and have conversations with all types of people. Just enjoy it for what it is.

I've risen this train a couple of times. The last one was the train to Chico, CA. I avoided the traffic along Interstate 5. It was nice to relax going up there. Granted, it was slower than driving, but it was nice to travel via train.

And almost 80 years later, our diesel electric passenger locomotives go the same speed as the EMD F's and E's from the 1940's. Oh well, at least they're air conditioned now.

My mom ued to tell stories of riding the trains. She lived close to Paint Lick Kentucky and they could take the train from there to where ever. They went to Chicago for a while, others went to Detroit, NYC, Washington DC; wherever. Think of how throttled be are now by the bare bones passenger service. Kentucky where I live has ONE train sta and you must have a car to get there, unless you live in Maysville on the Ohio River.

Great video and thanks for sharing your trip. Bummed that you did not get a seat on the left side of the train. That is where you have a great view of the Pacific Ocean for a few hours. Too bad you also did not get a seat in the dining car on the left side either. It is a railroad tradition to share a table with strangers if there is only 2 of you. You meet the most interesting people (sometimes). Hope you had a great trip!

Public transport in USA is not very convenient and takes very long to reach your destination if you rely on it. They encourage car and air business. Even your daily commute is difficult if you don't own a car. Road or Train Transportation is rare.

Interesting train ride. It actually runs between Los Angeles and Oakland, with a bus shuttle to San Francisco. If you come to visit I suggest taking a coast or mountain route, as it's much more interesting. The majority of this trip is through the valley, and while it is a spectacularly productive agricultural area, the landscape is pretty boring. In general Americans don't use trains much for passenger traffic. Trains are used mostly for freight, so you won't get anywhere near the experience you get in Europe, Japan, or China. A bus trip up the coast or through the mountains would likely be better.

It's been a ten hour ride since the original Coast Daylight was inaugurated in 1937. BTW-next time get a seat on the ocean (west) side of the car. The train follows the beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline for 100 miles and you missed it all.

12 hours for a 382 approx. mile distance - that is totally ridiculous.I just came back from Spain travelled a fast train between Madrid and Seville 212 miles it took about 2 1/2 hours with stops. So 12 hours for 382 miles that is totally ridiculous.Unless you just want to travel and meet people.
@georgesealy47066 жыл бұрын
I am a "journey person" as opposed to a "destination person." Some people just like to get where they are going as fast as possible. That's okay. I like the trip part. I like to see what is going on in the world. I much prefer to drive my car than take a plane. Different strokes for different folks. So anyway, I would enjoy this train ride.

Traveling to Oakland and then getting a bus to SF might have been a mistake. The Caltrain from San Jose to San Francisco is faster than the Coast Starlight from San Jose to Oakland and then the Thruway Bus.

At 9:02, a view of the lounge car - great! As I understand it on Amtrak food is a la carte, or order what you want from the menu, much as most restaurants. to me that is a big plus. Unfortunately on via in Canada, you need a first class ticket to have a meal available, or if you are on an overnight with s sleeper ticket, meals will be included, but the cost of the sleeper ticket is the biggest part of the overall cost. Hopefully as this continues, we will see a good view of the menu and the prices, and get some idea of what arrangements need to be made!
@HenrichHipca6 жыл бұрын
you make a reservation, then you order from the menu on the spot, I cannot remember the prices but not over the roof as far as I can remember, hard to say, depending what you compare it too, right - not much on the menu, if you are a vegan you’d better bring your own food ;-)
@BrucexfromxCanada6 жыл бұрын
BNot a vegan myself but the advantage over Via in Canada is that meals are available a la carte, whereas in Canada you would need a via 1 (first class) ticket at significant added cost.
