In this episode of the route learning series, we take a look at the freeware North East England network available from DP Simulation. Set in 2010, we follow the timetable of train 1N90, the 08:27 Grand Central service from London Kings Cross to Sunderland - operated by the final two Class 43 HST power cars still fitted with a Valenta engine. We join this train at York and then continue all the way to Sunderland, which is a journey of just over 77 miles. Stops along the way will include Thirsk, Northallerton, Eaglescliffe, Hartlepool, and Sunderland.

Beautiful video. I live in Hartlepool and I remember seeing many HSTs in our station. NR 158s, 150s and GC HSTs were my childhood 🥲 1:13:10 By the way that building on the right is an ASDA in real life. There are loads of supermarkets near the station for some reason. Makes shopping quite an experience.

One of a few perks of metro sharing the line and running alongside through to Sunderland is the ability to spot a mainline train while metro tries to achieve something close to line speed.

For several years this route between York and Northallerton was my way to and from work as part of my journey between Darlington and Leeds. Deltics and class 47s were the main forms of motive power back then.

That’s cool! I’d love to have a journey with a high speed commute like that! Even more cool that it was all loco hauled and presumably Mark 1 coaches?

@@PTGRail I once clocked a Deltic doing almost 120 between Thirsk and Northallerton until we had to slow for the 80 limit from Northallerton to Darlington. We had left York almost 10 minutes late and arrived in Darlington bang on time.

1:07:33 - it's the second one ;) . There are plans to bring the abandoned platform at Hartlepool back into use - the footbridge was removed in the 1990s, not sure why (probably cost saving or needed refurb). I'm from the area (Seaham's my nearest), I have to say I was mildly disappointed in Sunderland station itself. I appreciate it's a freeware route and it's not custom assets etc, but aside from basic layout it doesn't look much like it - the real one is all glass and metal in the middle and there's a light installation on the northbound platform that my grandma finds very creepy - it's currently undergoing refurb though. I think this is just something of a placeholder. I guess if you know the route in intimate detail because you're from the area, you will notice things and it's nice to see my local route finally in train sim. The DCL is a very nice line, however even though it has the coast, I think the Esk valley and Tyne Valley lines are better in terms of scenery from the window, but yes there are certainly some very nice photography places here. I believe there's a path between Easington Colliery and Nose's Point in Seaham that sticks relatively close to the railway.

At the real Hartlepool Station, on the wall on the right as you approach, you can see a patch in the brickwork where it was repaired after an encounter with a German naval shell in the First World War.

Some of my best memories as a lil Synny-tot was watching the Class 43 fly through Twyford station. I think it was before FGW, the HSTs were green and I believe had a bird logo on the side... Was that FGW?? First time riding a Virgin Trains Class 43 from Reading to Leeds... Before the dopey 220s and 221s. First HST I went on. Also watching the GNERs leaving Leeds station... My grandparents lived near Skipton station and every night I used to watch the empty GNER train leave the station. I always knew the train was leaving because of that scream... Ahh good times... I used to call it "The Big Black Train"... I was 4 Real trains have the 3 S's Slidey Windows Slammy Doors Screamy Engines...

May suggest the variation in speed limits after Northallerton is due to subsistence from unstable ground. This is caused mainly by the coal mining activity in the past.

Except there aren't any coalfields in the Northallerton area. The Northeast coalfield is in Durham and Northumberland.

I just heard that you’re going to run a diagram with a 185 from Barrow-in-Furness to Preston (first leg of a journey to Manchester Airport) if you do it again, could you please rerun the whole route but in a double 156? If you aren’t able to do that I totally understand but if you can then that’ll be great (Just want to relive some fond memories from when the 156s (with Northern) were just starting to get refurbished in I think 2015/16) (sorry this comment was so long.)

This may be a stupid question but how is fuel level measured? I have seen a few of your vids and never see a fuel gauge? I'm guessing the tanks are filled before the day and generally has enough fuel but what if there is an engine issue that isnt detected and its using more fuel or has more carriages on, would it ever run out on track or is there some sort of warning?
