I think if you had torn the bread up it might have been better, that way the birds won't be able to fight over the big bread piece and can't pull it away from you. Also have you heard of this invention called bird seed... or just like sunflower seeds or dried corn or really any dried cheap bag of seeds without tough outer coatings bought in bulk will work and have the same benefits as tearing up the bread just cheaper and wil;l let you put in less effort. You should see if they remember you this year by coming out a week before you start feeding them again and just ringing the bell again. Let's see Pavlov MK II in action!

I’ve been feeding two magpies for 3 years now. All they get is some mince meat no bigger than my small finger nail , & they love to graze on crushed walnuts. Once they’ve had a feed they seem to like company & wander around my yard looking for extra snacks. They’re not demanding at all , & they show their appreciation by warbling tobether . Being an Aussie i love these birds & look forward to seeing them every day & I’ve never been swooped since befriending them.

@shellodee
@shellodee Жыл бұрын
@@timjohnun4297 that's correct, and also on top of that, raw mince on its own lacks calcium and leaves their bones and beaks brittle, deformed and easily breakable, especially in the babies of the mince fed magpies. You can however get supplement powders from pet stores and online that you can mix with the mince to counter the damage, or buy some crickets or mealyworms from a pet store for them. Bread is also really bad for magpies. One slice is the equivalent of a human eating 3 meat pies....they eat insects and dead or small animals (like mice)....not carbs

I give them a mix of bugs, ferret dry food (meat based) and very occasionally nuts, seed bread or fruit. They will see me leaving for the shops and come with sometimes part of the way then they go and wait for me to come home. They sound awesome. We have 2 magpies in our neighbourhood. I live in a unit in urban sprawl, but they come ever morning and every evening. The male comes into the unit, runs into the kitchen and to the fridge, where he knows we keep his food. On the way out, he becomes a vacuum cleaner and pecks up a crumb or 2 off the kitchen flor that has gotten missed after sweeping. He then makes a beeline for the balcony door where his mate waits, and then they get more of a feed before they fly off

7 year-old me, back in the 80s when our family visited Australia, would have appreciated to know this beforehand. 😂 My parents thought it would make lovely pictures when they could buy some birdfeed in a wildlife park or zoo for us kids to feed the lorikeets. Damn, it hurt! Needless to say that you could only see anxiously screaming children under a flock of angry lorikeets. 😭😂 A couple of years ago Angela Merkel was visiting some zoo here in Germany and they made her feed the lorikeets. I'm convinced they did this on purpose. 😈 The pictures looked almost like those of me and my sister...😂😂😂

I have a pair of magpies that return to breed every year in the Northern Beaches of Sydney (Penguin Bloom territory). The parents will both take food from my hand and sit outside the screen door and sing to me to let me know they are there for a feed, (not necessarily every day). When the young ones leave the nest mum and/or dad bring them down to the garden to meet me, until it is becomes time to drive them off and fend for themselves. I feed them small dry cat food, making sure not to feed them to the extent that they become too reliant on me. The golf club that I play at also has a large population of birds, including many magpies, all of which have learnt to peacefully co-exist with all of us golfers. A few of the maggies recognize those of us that carry food for them and are quite willing to take food from our hands.

Turns out that when I'd go to that Park they knew me, wouldn't swoop me and even come sit by me on the grass. A year after she had moved so no feeding, the new generations of magpies, knew I was their parents 😂 friend and wouldn't swoop me either and come sing outside my bedroom window each morning. Made me so happy that I bought them a kick-arse birdbath for my front garden so they could cruise over from the park for a drink or splash around. I love them!

@@eugenetswong nah, definitely getting fatter, try more protein rich foods rather than carbs, they'll excrete the excess. Try cutting up some chicken or ham into smallish chunks (~1inch), don't worry if they seem a bit large, the magpies will break them up to eat them. They also probably need a calcium source but I don't think cheese or milk are safe for them, so maybe add some calcium chloride to the meat occasionally.

Hello from New Zealand. I had a family of magpies visit just about every day for over a year. The youngest was the one that trusted me first. He/ she would sit in the tree near our dining room window and squark to let me know he was there. When I tossed some bread it for him the others would fly in for their share. In a matter of weeks, the older ones would be in the tree waiting and singing their beautiful songs. That young Maggie had a bad limp and more often stood on one leg . One day he stopped coming,maybe was hurt in a storm that had occurred , then after a few more weeks, the older birds just stopped coming as well. It’s been a few months now with no sign of them. Maybe they have found a better area to live 🙁 They are beautiful birds and yes, very intelligent..Thank you for sharing your video❤

My pop sort of trained magpies. He feeds them little bits of meat and a couple of them did a little dance thing on the fence like just a hop side to side thing. So my pop started only feeding them after that and now there is at least 5 magpies just hopping side to side on his fence every day to get food. The funniest part isn't seeing it, it is other animals seeing it cause the other birds that go to the seed feeder seem to watch the magpies do this and one of my dogs when we visit likes to watch and get the missed food but the other tried to hop like they do to get food. Not hop but she bounces on her front paws while sitting to get food.

There used to be an old maggie that hung around my house and I noticed that the top half of his beak was broken off. Worried he couldn't find his own food well enough we used to feed him a few days a week. A crowd draws a crowd though, and within a month there was close to 15 magpies showing up on our balcony every single day for some ham. So we started to feed them occasionally as well, mainly focusing on the broken beak bird. This went on for about 4 months and the birds were very comfortable around us but we were moving out and I was worried the bird might starve to death. So I attempted to track him in the yard and maybe catch him. Lo and behold I see the sneaky motherfucker pecking grubs and worms out of the ground like it was nothing, broken beak notwithstanding. Magpies in USA and Europe are different. They are of the familie corvidae known voor their intelligence. Indeed members of this family can be trained when they are young. Great stuff. However you have to pay attention to the seasonal change in their behavior in spring you have to keep them in side. This is the time when in the wild the youngsters leave their folk/murder and go out to find mates. Magpies in Australia are not related they are very aggressive and highly territorial when defending their nests.

You watch you farther swoop and attack cyclists, and sadness will stab your heart, even if you know it’s to protect you. You grow up a normal bird. When you find a mate, you ask them to fly to Germany with you.. you have a mastermind plan. You fly to Germany, the flight tiring your wings. You find a time machine and step into it. One day you see Hitler passing by, and attack him. You alter the course of history, wars ending, less people die. You killed hitler. I don't fear what I call "Clackers" who swoop beside your head and clack their beak to scare you but I have been given a concussion by one who rammed into my helmet and now cannot ride my bike because one on my route started going for my cheek. Pedestrians have been chased into traffic by magpies and deaths have happened. You also can't always bribe them once they've started protecting their nests (I had one that refused to take food from me) and they are much more likely to attack you than a spider or snake. A spider or snake will run away unless you corner it, a magpie will chase you for 400+ metres around its nest to ensure its eggs and babies are safe.

I once helped a suffocating and freezing in cold raven. After she could move and at least stand, she was very friendly. He did shit on my jacket but that's all. I gave her food and water and she gave me love bites (I guess, since it didn't hurt) and reacted to the word Raven. When I said raven and pulled my arm up she came to me and and ''sit'' on my shoulder. I had mice problem in my home and I had a freshly killed one, so I gave it to her... I VERY appreciated the massacre she showed me by breaking bones and ripping the mouse apart eating it. :D

I have a parrot and can confirm about the "love bites" thing they do. They just take your finger or whatever and just hold it in their beak. Birds, at least parrots, like to feel things with their tongues and use it like a finger to get a sense for things. A bird beaking but not biting you is a sign of trust. Also, parrots poop on average of once ever 8 minutes and do not possess the muscles to hold their bowels, it comes out when it comes out, so they just kinda shit all the time, it's not a deliberate act. I'd bet ravens are similar.

@@jackmiller8851, I wasn't talking about my reaction to the mice being torn apart, I've seen plenty of dead animals and their innards, I'm talking about the fact that the guy had a very wholesome story about him and his bird then out of nowhere starts talking about how it massacred the dead mouse and tore it apart including a vivid description of how it did it. So there's no need to be a dick about it.

Magpies have facial recognition abilities, they can remember your face for 5 years. I have a one acre block in the Blue Mountains, with an orchard and have forged symbiotic relationships with the birds. Neither myself or wife have been swooped in 25 years and the magpies often leave their young with us when they have had enough. The cocky's are awesome but they do eat a lot of sunflower seed's but at least they don't strip my fruit tree's anymore. Funny in my area the magpies are the top dog and even the cocky's are scared of them although the Lorakeets for a small bird are very aggressive. I noticed you had a grey Butcher bird in one shot sitting on a chair, they look like a member of the Kingfisher family only small and are a bit like a magp[e in colour, if it's nesting in your yard watch out they will attack and put magpies to shame they will draw blood, and for some reason they won't befriend you cheers.

Hi, just want to point out that I have a butcher bird that lives in my yard. He gets along with me great, and my magpies and pigeons seem to be friends with him. All of my birds, magpies and butcher bird included, let me pat them, so it is possible for you to befriend butcher birds. You just need mince. a fuck ton of mince.

@@justinm1721 when I said they won't befriend you I meant they won't land on you or take food from your hand. Well at least the ones I know won't. If I stand on the deck and call out "butcher" they will come for a feed but they generally catch small bits of meat on the fly. One other thing, I always mix insectivore with any mince I feed butchers and magpies especially when they have young so they get the right balanced diet, don't want to muck them up. This year I have nursed a wattle bird that got washed out of it's nest at about 5 days old. fed him insectivore mixed with honey till his feathers came in and he could fly. tried to re introduce him to his parents by hanging him in a basket under their nest, but they wouldn't have a bar of him!. he lives outside and drops over for a feed and will sit on my shoulder and takes honey from a teaspoon and blobs of insectivore mixed with honey. His parents chase him off, eventually I think he will find a mate and I won't see him anymore. He thinks my bull Arab dog is his sibling and will tease him and sometimes even lands on him and pecks at his fur. the dog loves him and tries to protect him from his parents and they play chasing in the yard it's very funny to watch!.

I have a story from a small town in Wyoming this video reminded me of. Around 2011 we had a flock of crows invade the town. Not some small group mind you, but tens of thousands of birds. Trees would be completely blacked out and shimmering from the amount of birds on them at once. The town tried to get rid of them the first year, and that caused the crows to start doing the same thing. They would swoop people and perform tactical carpet-shitting all over town. It took people about a month of that before they realized the crows would specifically target people, usually the ones that were mean to the crows by chasing them and harassing them. The second year the town started encouraging people to feed them, and ever since then the crows all flock once a year, chill for a week, then move on. Except for a few houses they absolutely ransack, because those houses decided to try killing one that first year. Corvids are incredibly smart birds, and they can absolutely wreck the paint job of my asshole neighbors car in the span of a month. Mine was always fine. Be nice to the birds.
