For the past 2 months, I’ve been training for a new figure skating goal which is to compete at my very first figure skating competition as an adult and passing my adult bronze free skate test. This is my journey to competing at the 95th Annual Middle Atlantic Figure Skating Championships.
Figure skating is something that is a deeply personal part me that is embedded into my identity since I discovered it 3 years ago. Hope this provides some interesting insight into the sport of figure skating as well as provide motivation for everyone try something new and challenge yourself (‘:
I will try to upload my competition program with the actual music in a separate video so this one is not copy-righted so please look out for that!

As a former competitive figure skater you don’t know how much I loved this video! I always had so much respect for adults learning to skate and even compete. You have beautiful spins and you don’t travel much which is fantastic and you didn’t hesitate going into the second jump on your combination jump which was fantastic as well! Nice edge work and pretty hands! The makeup and dress was gorgeous! I felt like a proud coach watching this😂 I noticed in warm up both on and off the ice you kept the arms tight and over the right side of the chest and you got that left hip up and over to the right and kept the hips nice and tight! The hips is what I see most people struggle with. Great work!

This was really really good. All your jobs had great height and good form. You got right back up when you fell and didn't miss a beat. Judges look at how you respond to falls to. I won 4th in a competition once because several of us fell but most of them sat and cried for a moment. No time for that. Your dress was gorgeous and you have great edges.

Great going! It's so much more difficult for an adult to learn basic skating, let alone figure skating. I took a few group lessons when I was in the sixth grade. The problem was that I was tall: 5' 61/2"! That doesn't help with balance, center of gravity, etc. I could do a decent scratch spin, but skating along the ice was difficult in the crummy rental skates. They had no support in the feet/arches and in the sides. My ankles pronated (turned inwards), and that was the kiss of death to my skating, along with my height! Then one day, after the lesson ended, I was skating along, just barely, along with my dad. He was doing much better than I was, and he was 6' tall and weighed around 300 lbs! Oh, well... 😕 Then it happened. My toe pick got caught in a rut in the ice, and it flipped my feet up into the air and my behind onto the ice. 😮😯😲😩😖 OUCH!!! I broke my coccyx (tailbone), and it took 3 months for it to heal. 😥😢🤕 I still love figure skating, but I now enjoy it as a spectator sport! Turns out, I'm a pretty good putter at golf! 🤗⛳🏌

Based on my experience with similar competition styles (Not ice skating but test based competition) It's the easy stuff that gets you usually. People focus so hard day of on the complicated stuff, they forget to focus on the easy stuff because of the relief of getting past/worry about upcoming move

Well done I nearly had heart failure when you fell but well done for keeping on I was a figure skater from the early age of 17 months old but due to disability now I’m unable to skate in adulthood but my youngest daughter has taken over the mantle and even though she’s classed as an adult now she still practises when not working xxx

Really late, but you did a great job! I went to a rink the other day for fun and I feel like something just clicked in my head like, "this is what I want to do", it first started with just wanting to go to the rink often, but I might've clicked on Yuzuru Hanyu's "Haru yo, koi" performance, and honestly if I were there at the Gala Exhibition I would be sobbing because of how beautiful it is. (Not saying that I didn't shed tears while watching the video) Just watching Hanyu perform really made me want to try skating out for myself too. I've heard it's easier to start skating younger, and as of right now, I'm eleven. I was contemplating saying that in my comment, but it's true. So as you know, eleven year olds, or children in general, are pretty broke. Although, I don't know if that's just me. So obviously, my parents will have to cover for my skating expenses if I were to go out and try to pursue it. Do you have any not too expensive but gets the work done skates for beginners? I have watched your ultimate guide to figure skating, but I'm really only finding public lessons in the rinks near me, but I don't know if it's just because I'm stupidly blind or there is genuinely no private lessons. Do you have anything on finding private lesson coaches? If you have any tips for me as a young skater if I do choose to start skating, it would be really nice if you could add that into your reply. Your ultimate guide really helped me to be confident in pursuing figure skating. Thanks a lot! I hope you can get even better at figure skating than you already are!

i started at 14 in outdoor rinks in my area and am now (2 years later) working on toe loops & single foot spins! my biggest tip is to get skates & go to a few public sessions then if you like it a lot, try to find classes at a rec centre or something like that. those will give you a strong foundation & you can find a coach through them as you progress. please don’t feel like you’re too old to pursue figure skating, many people start at your age or even older & still find joy in the sport. i wish you good luck!

It seems that no matter if you are left or right handed, you do spirals better on your right leg. I am left handed and spin and jump clockwise, but do spirals better on my right leg and spread eagles leading with my left foot.

For now you can also do off-ice training to stay strong until then!

Hi Cathy, I really enjoy your video and the information you shared. My question is that do a lot of figure skaters have more than one coach to help them get ready for the test or competition? Do the coaches give contradicting advice or they usually together for the skater? Thank you!!
@cathydingg
@cathydingg 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Great question and I think it depends on you but most elite skaters do have multiple coaches due to them being a specialist in one particular thing. I think usually at rinks there are "coaching teams" of 2-3 coaches to tend to coach together and have a similar method. Sometimes they do give different advice but that can help or harm. Sometimes trying different approaches with different coaches can help you figure out what works best for your body but there are also times where 2 different techniques can throw you off (for more technical stuff like axel) so depends on you! If you are just starting, trying out a couple different approaches won't hurt
