PPL PROGRAM: bit.ly/GETRHPPL
FULL GYM PROGRAM: bit.ly/fullgym...
30-DAY GARAGE PROGRAM: bit.ly/3igtiIF
I thought it would be a fun idea to look back at Arnold Schwarzenegger's training and nutrition to see if it still holds up today. Interestingly enough some things definitely do.
From a training standpoint, no one pushed themselves in the gym harder than Arnold. He constantly teetered on the edge of over training but you really can't argue how well it worked. I think we can learn a lot from that, even if it's just something we use to bring up lagging body parts.
In terms of nutrition, we've advanced quite a bit. I haven't had bacon on my diet since I was 7 so it was a nice change but hard to justify with what we know today.

I am in my 60’s and for the last 30 years my goal has not been to look like Arnold, but rather to have his training philosophy. I look at how he used to do every exercise with enthusiasm, instead of dreading. He recently said in an interview how he never understood how lifters would just stand their going through the motions. That is why a lot of people use such heavy weight they are no longer able to keep strict form, but they can lie to themselves and use it as an excuse as to why their form is so bad. The same with lifting when your mind is not in it. Sometimes your body is telling your mind it needs a break, instead of just dropping the weight that day and doing more reps. Other lifters (including myself) have done this, and a 1/4 of the way into the workout gotten re energized and ended up having a serious heavy day.

I'm 63 5'10 190 and do very high reps but do occasionally add some heavy . But I'm content with my build and there's no need to try and get bigger. I'd rather be careful to be able to lift until I positively can't any longer and then I'll be done at that point with it all. Just like a wild animal.

As a younger man in the 90s, I trained the Arnold way (I watched the movie, I read the book). I worked out the entire upper body 3 times a week and legs once a week (it has always taken my legs a week to recover from one heavy workout). I put on 65 natural pounds at a very lean body mass in 3 years but overtraining gave me a life time of pains as well (shoulders, elbows, back especially) that I still contend with. I think if you are pushing for quicker gains at the risk of injury, then go for it. But, I'd say that lifting is best as a long game.

I've trained a long time, first time I walked in the gym was in the late 70's and had aches and pains like you. But just by chance when dieting, I cut out dairy and within a week, I realised just about all my aches and pains had disappeared. Turns out I'm intolerant to dairy. Easily fixed. I drink lactose free milk or almond/oak stuff. I'm not 100% dairy free. I'll have a meal with cheese in and there's no way I'm giving up chocolate! But I've cut enough of it out to stop the pains.

The thing about that training schedule of Arnies is he only trained like that in the few months during his prep. He didn't train it year round, 3/4 of the year he trained 4 days a week once a day. For roughly 3 months during prep he would do that disgustingly overkill yet badass workout routine.

When I began training back in the 70's, the only protein powder that I could find was Bob Hoffman's protein powder. There were two formulas, 70% and 90%. Both tasted like paper mache, it clumped, and you basically had to chew it as you drank it. Weider had his protein powders also, but you had to order them as my local store didn't carry them.

I'm currently eating Carnivore (Ruminant Meats, Dairy, Eggs, water).....I purposely get 60% of my calories from FAT, and am LOSING weight. FAT, in and of itself, is NOT the issue. The absence of fat (especially animal fat) in your diet, causes your body to turn carbs (not just flours and grains, but also fruits and vegetables) into Fat because it sees itself as STARVING for Fat.

It would be interesting to follow Tony Sansone’s diet and workout from the 1920s. I think he was the first bodybuilder who published items like these. One thing is missing in this video. What was the conclusion after 30 days? Did Ryan gain or loose muscle? Did he gain weight or got shredded? I am an average Joe, so I will not preach anything here. However, I have started seriously training 8 months ago, focusing on both workout and nutritioning and I am seeing amazing results. I am using Mike Mentzer High Intensity Principles and it works for me. I work out each body part once per week and it is enough. But on each workout I am going to absolute failure, usually assisted by some gym guys. However I have to point out that I am natural and pushing almost 40. For younger people and people using gear, once a week might not cut it.

Back in his day they didn't have access to such high quality supplements but then we all shouldn't rely on them anyway. Love your no-nonsense approach to training, etc. And by they way, that lady really brings the missing sparkle to your vlogs! ha... who is she, and what's her OF's? 😉
