Thank you Ben. The two range training examples you described will help shooters get to what matters on their next training session. Very well done 👍

Ben, going out on a limb here, no one can question your results. However, what you describe sounds like Lanny Basham's description of an "unconsciously competent" champion. You think like a winner, have the skills and supreme confidence and so you perform like one consistently, and do so under pressure but I don't think you know how you do it mentally. For instance I doubt you ever fear failure. You trust your skills and don't "try" to perform. You focus on one thing while shooting a stage (probably vision) and trust your subconscious skills to do everything else. These habits you have, are not what new and struggling shooters experience. They fear failure, "try" and focus on many things while shooting a stage. They fail and the cycle goes on. They get used to losing while you get used to winning. How would you advise a shooter that has learned to lose (not get 1st place) consistently in spite of training hard? How do you break the bad mental cycle?

but on a serious note lol, Tell them to pick something smaller to focus on that can they win at. If they are constantly failing then their goals are too big and probably they are focused on something they cannot control anyway....like results. So instead they need to pick a small goal to win at. Something I did that helped me grow a lot was focus on stage planning. I went to the match and said hey I don't care what place I come in or about anything else that happens. For me to win today all I have to do is be able to close my eyes and visualize the stage I'm about to shoot 3 times in a row without a single hiccup. That gave me 6 chances to win each match. Hell in the hot months I'd even say that I'd win if I drank an entire bottle of water between each stage. Hope this makes sense, once you start putting a lot of small wins together like this, especially wins that contribute toward better overall performance you cannot help but get better results.

Minnesota Fats, a past world champion pool player, famously said "Practice is for suckers." He did not mean that he did not practice per say, rather, If you are going to play for money you need to play for money. In similar fashion, Ben is suggesting to practice as close to how you will experience the competitions.

The main thing Ben said (for me anyway) was, if you don't do the dry-firing to warm up the body/eyes, coupled with the mind's stage visualization, you are going to get results like your first run in range practice that you didn't like. Which is the real base line. 👌

Just shoot a match today. Bombed the classifier. Wish I would have heard this video this morning! Lol Make total sense. The examples were spot on. smoking & Joking with the boys when someone is shooting OR taking those mental reps on the side. Can’t wait to learn from you (take one of your classes) when you come out to California. Thanks for the video.

This is advice for every sport. Combining visualization and stress simulation for stress inoculation. At high level competition, everyone there has the ability to perform well enough to win. Making it to that point-practical shooting supersquads, precision shooting finals, other sports’ playoffs-means anyone there can physically do the thing needed to win. The winner is the one who doesn’t lose… the person or team that has prepared for the most pressure and makes fewer mistakes.

Always interesting to listen to your knowledge and thoughts. I always start my training with stages (Maximum 3 runs they should not be similar ) that are match like. Start it similar to how you explaining. Match like. After that I start to practice…

Hi Ben thank you. You perfectly described my shortcoming about this "mental game zone". What is the most efficient set up for a competition range bag, I tend to over complicate it and all that extra equipment shit keeps me out of the mental zone with nervous fiddling and fidgeting. I trimmed down on a ton of unnecessary "wants" but need to do more work.

I know a lot of my mistakes in a match are mental focus!!! Working on doing a lot more dry fire and doing things that you suggest. Hopefully I can improve!!

I’m very curious if you ever shoot with exercise induced elevated heart rate to mimic the stress of a potential real life scenario? I’m sure it could seem like some Instagram operator shit but honestly it seems like a very legit way to add “resistance training” to your shooting. And for competition it’s not legit unless your an emotional wreck in big competitions. But let’s be real, we’re all really training from defense, and so in the sense of practicing how you play it seems fully valid to run to or away from a fight and have to shoot while breathing hard from a sprint

Ben do you prefer a certain moa dot. I know some people feel very strong about it but from 2-5 I can’t say I notice any difference when shooting.
