Well sheriffs are the only ones that are directly elected and responsible to the people... Unlike state police directors or PD Cheifs that are almost always appointed and answer to some bureaucrat instead of the people. That's why Sheriffs are always one of the last lines of defense when it comes to defending their local population against state or federal overreach
