I'm totally loving these videos, watching your layout coming to life. It's really looking good! That being said...WARNING... if this hobby really grabs you by the butt, your layout will never be "finished." I've seen so many experts posting videos of themselves building their layouts that have taken them one or even two years to accomplish. But once they're finished, watching the trains go round and round for a while starts getting old for them and they end up pulling the layout all apart and they start over again. So heed my warning! 🤣😂🤣

Idea: Ken, you should include a Ken's Karpentry garage in the process of construction somewhere on your layout. :)

My favorite part so far is up on the top where the road might end up going across the tracks, that's really cool. I also like over just before the train runs over that switch you put in where the two tracks join together with the pink trees... you're getting really good at this, I'm going to watch your brother's channel too. I have several channels myself and have my brothers working with me on them, if you can ignore the know it all's it's really fun to get the family in on it. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see what's next!

Hi Ken I had already watched this episode but have found something on another channel that you may be interested in. The channel is called HO Scale and the model builder showed how he made rocks out of tree bark. He picked some tree back off a tree and then sliced them on the bandsaw to give a smooth back to glue and after affixing it, he painted them and they look very realistic. If you get to read this then you may like to look up the site and see

Was thinking about scale models they hand built years ago for the film industry and the details that go into it, which makes me wonder if adding some in your grassy areas might break it up a bit. IOW, the grass looks flat like a golf course so maybe find some broken twigs and cut a few short to use as miniature tree stumps. Sprinkle in a few larger pebbles and create a stone wall in a field.... or even a few lumps of drywall compound to fabricate some minor hills in a meadow. (add grass over) A flat rock on the edge of the pond might help build a scene out of Huck Finn with kids jumping in for a swim. Just some ideas.

Thank you very much. I’d like the idea of a stonewall. I may try that.

Wow, your brother is doing model railroading too and starting his own channel! It's great that you inspired him to get back into it. The grass product does really make the set-up you have look nice. I am really enjoying seeing you do this Ken. It's nice to hear the happy chicks in the background. I like your ledge work. I like it Ken! Thanks for this video!

Hi Ken I like to use fixed ballast all along the track so I can keep it dust- free with regular vacuuming. It’s amazing how dusty a track can get if you don’t use it for a few months. Wall cavity silica looks pretty good and is cheap, and also spraying with ladies hair spray can work as a good fixative, or spray adhesive as used in upholstering etc…the layout looks great, do you have a few scale vehicles maybe? 🙏
@Kens2652 ай бұрын
Very nice. I don’t have scale vehicles…yet

@@Kens265 She's in England and has a little layout which can be lowered from sewing room ceiling on to her quilting table. So far is working on a park and an RAF museum as scenic features. The UK model railway scale of OO is 4mm=1ft, or 1/76 scale, which is much closer to 1/72 model airplane scale than is our HO scale 0f 3.5mm=1ft, or 1/87 scale.

I really like the way they’re training. Looks you really done something new and ingenious? I would look at it like it’s an interstate system but instead of cars it’s trains and I would fill in the three access hold you have with something removable so you still have access but put some industries down there that it goes past.

Ken, why do you use an amount of a different variety of real rocks? Why don't you use plaster cloth? It's much lighter (in weight) on the layout and enables you to cover spaces/voids etc easier
@Kens2652 ай бұрын
I guess I’m staying with the theme that I started with. On my other layout, I will be doing what you just suggested. Thanks for the input.

I am wondering if adding more trees into the layout but of different types and intermingle them with those that are already planted? Also would it look more realistic if you were to add some rocks/boulders or even mounds in the grassed areas to take away the flatness. I am not a modeller but as I watch you continue to build the layout. it actually gives me a vision.

Why don't you take the trees and paint the glue mixture on the green part and sprinkle the ground cover on them. They won't look so toy like.
@Kens2652 ай бұрын
Interesting. Do you think that would work?
@alweinhofer54532 ай бұрын
I use 3M spray adhesive and coat the inexpensive trees with various ground covers. Improves them greatly.

Agreed! Adding the faker green to the trees will make them more realistic.

Is your brother a mime? I watched one video and he didn't speak one word! I'm not sure if I'll revisit. But I'll keep watching you Ken. 😊
@Kens2652 ай бұрын

What a ridiculous comment. I know you think you're 'dunking' on the guy by calling him a mime, but really you make yourself look like a clown. He has 6 videos on his channel, and in one of them he decided not to say anything. You can't handle that and have to start with the insults. I'll bet this isn't the first time in life somebody reminded you you're a jerk, Chris.
