In this video we visit Dulwich Hill, a station on the T3 Bankstown Line in Sydney's inner south western suburbs. Dulwich Hill is situated adjacent to the Metropolitan Goods Line between Enfield Yard and Port Botany which sees frequent freight trains, making the station a great place to do some railfanning. Dulwich Hill also serves as the terminus of the L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line.
We visit the station during the afternoon peak where we see plenty of train action. We see many Sydney Trains' passing through on stopping and express services; mostly a mixture of Waratah's (A & B Sets) but we also see numerous K Sets on express services. Built between 1981 - 1985 the K Sets are the oldest type of train in the Sydney Trains fleet and are set to be withdrawn in the coming years. We also see some Millenniums (M Sets). On the freight lines we see various Pacific National freight trains hauled by 81 Class locomotives and TT Class locomotives. Trains we see include intermodals, aggregate trains, cement trains, and garbage trains.
We then head to the adjacent light rail stop where we see all three types of trams used on the L1, including the Alstom Citadis 305 and the CAF Urbos 3/100's.
Dulwich Hill station opened on the 1st February 1895 as Wardell Road, before being renamed Dulwich Hill on the 1st July 1920. The current weatherboard overhead concourse and brick platform building were provided in 1935 and are heritage listed of being local significance. The L1 light rail was extended to Dulwich Hill from its previous terminus at Lilyfield on the 27th March 2014.
Dulwich Hill may be a great place for trainspotting but the station won't remain in its current form for much longer. As part of the Sydney Metro City and Southwest Project the Bankstown Line between Sydenham and Bankstown will be converted into a Sydney Metro Line. The Bankstown Line is set to close for 12 months in mid-2024 to allow the final conversion works to take place, which will see stations retrofitted with platform screen doors. Along with this and the separated rail corridor for Sydney Metro trains with high fences, it will soon no longer be possible to properly see the freight line from the station platform. Get some clips here while you still can!
The Metro conversion works also includes DDA upgrades to stations along the Bankstown Line. As part of this a new overhead eastern concourse was built at Dulwich Hill to provide lift access and a direct link between the station and the light rail platforms (imo something that should have been built when the light rail was constructed). The new concourse opened in October 2023.
