TRANGIA STOVE KNOCK OFF HOW GOOD IS IT

I HAVE USED TRANGIA STOVES FOR OVER 20YRS.iN ALL THAT TIME I HAVE ONLY EVERY HAD THE STOVE BY ITSELF AND LATER THE MILITARY STOVE SET..ALL HAVE PERFORMS WELL ABOVE THE EXPECTED. IN A RECENT SEARCH OF AMAZON I CAME UPON A LEDMARK STOVE WHICH IS KNOCKOFF OF THE TRANGIA DESIGN. HAVING NEVER OWED A TRUE COOK SET BUILT FOR THE TRANGIA LIKE THE MOD 25 AND MOD 27 I WANTED TO TRY OUT THE DESIGN. WHEN THE LEDMARK ARRIVED IT SEEMS WELL MADE AND WAS IN GOOD CONDITION. FROM MY PAST EXPERANCE IN CAMPING AND USING STOVES IN CAMPING I FOUND IT A WISE IDEA TO APIN THE NON FOOD AREAS WITH HIGH TEMP BBQ PAINT TO HELP PROTECT THE METAL PLUS MAKE WIPING OFF SOOT A LOT EASY. IN THIS VIDEO I SPEAK OF HOW TO IMPROVE AND MOD THE STOVE TO IMPROVE IT IN THE FIELD. THE FUEL IS ALCOHOL ( HARDWARE STORE DENATURED ).I FOUND THE BURN TIME FOR BOILING WATER TO BE GOOD AND THE OVERALL RUN TIME ON ONE FILLING TO BE VERY GOOD.

I have the same Ledmark set--and I have never had any problem with it being tippy or unstable. As a matter of fact, it is handy being able to just lift off the windscreen and snuff out the stove without burning your hand. One other advantage of this design is that you can use a heavier frypan and just set it on top of the windscreen. With a heavier pan it works great!

Greetings from Denmark. Love your videos. This is not a Trangia knock off. It’s a Swedish special forces one man kitchen, arctic issue. (Jäeger kök) knock off. The original uses the military burner. It’s a super system that is even more compact than the Trangia 27. It is not only good for boiling water. With a simmer ring on the burner, it is very good for making soups and stews.

Very useful and informative video. A few points to note though - Trangia burners have a cotton lining between the inner brass tube and the case, this seems to make the unit more efficient. A lot of the knock-offs don't include this. I have a knock off burner made of aluminium, and until I sat there one evening and poked LOTS cotton wool into the chamber via the jets and packed it out properly, it never really worked as well as a genuine Trangia. After the mod it's every bit as good. Secondly, if you buy a genuine Trangia cook set, you won't be dissapointed with the build quality - you get what you pay for. Their customer services department is excellent and they'll happily sell you a replacement O ring (or lid, regulator lid etc), if you ask them. Finally, I can't seem to find any real information about the "why's and wherefores" - for example, why are these burners the size they are - even the knock-offs are pretty much the same size. Why are they round? Would a different shape (square for example) be more efficient. But yeah, great video! Greetings from the UK!

As an outdoor swede I grew up with Trangia, Primus and Optimus. I don't like the alcohol burner, but there are other burners available. The newer Trangias comes with a suitable hole in the stove for the hose, but that is an easy mod. Most times I use gas (isobutane/propane bottles) but sometimes I use synthetic petrol (the same as for the mower) in my Optimus Nova burner. Nice to be able to switch off and the fingers don't taste horrible anymore.

An interesting comparison with associated tips .. thanks. I have the little Trangia 28 Mini which serves me just fine. Some additions such as extra bowls from a '70's Evernew Camping Bowl Set and other odds and sods, give me a really neat little one-man kit .. two for when a Lady is present 😊. I have read other forums with explanations that 'running the stove dry' can result in eventual cracking damage to it. I don't run my stove dry and thus 'err' on using more rather than less fuel. A little disposable syringe takes care of transferring unused fuel back to wherever. Also, I do not transport it 'wet'. Leakage .. it 'will' find a way .. eventually. A tip to reduce the possibility of something nasty happening when having to refuel during mid-cooking. I always have a wet cloth on hand during cooking .. multitude of uses .. handling hot cookware, protecting surfaces, cleaning sticky hands, etc. Also .. prior to refuelling, a wet cloth placed over the now-extinguished stove ensures that the flame is out and cools the stove sufficiently for safe handling and refuelling. Chinese .. for various reasons, I try, wherever possible, to avoid purchasing from them .. not easy in this day and age .. but directly .. no. Take care ..

I’ve recommended these for a long time. They’re very similar to the Trangia but really are more similar to the Optimus 77. When the swede military kits started going over $30 I started recommending these. I typically recommend adding a Trangia burner or at least the simmer ring. Also the strap can be replaced with Arno straps available on Amazon. The 24” works. Adding the Trangia simmer ring solves your problem with extinguishing the stove.

The metal disc that holds the alcohol stove can be manipulated in and out so as to make storage room for a small Trangia kettle. I use a cross stand on the burner and it’s the perfect height to use the kettle without snuffing out the flame.

I bought a Trangia 27 in a little outdoor store in the southwest of the UK in 1984. Can't remember how much I paid for it, but it has been all over the world with me and it has never let me down. It doesn't really have anything on it that can fail. I have been immersion heating food with it since your first immersion heating video. Great advice. PS - replacement O rings for both commercial and military Trangia stove are available for cheap on ebay, it is worth getting spares.

Grew up with these in the UK as a Scout and also my schoolfriends took theirs when we first went camping without parental supervision in the Lake District. I have never wanted to buy one as I find the whole setup a bit bulky, plus I don't like aluminium cookware. Also they have always been pretty pricey, I seem to recall my schoolfriend paid more than the equivalent of $50, back in the late 80s. However the burner alone is excellent value for money - we can pick them up now online for £15 including delivery, that's under 20 bucks. The only ''knockoffs'' I think are worth buying are the Titanium Chinese ones for those who count their grams & ounces, but they are actually more expensive than the real Swedish made brass burners. Use mine inside a folding twig stove which is a perfect potstand and windshield in one, plus I can burn twigs in it to conserve fuel. I don't bother with those expensive fuel bottles, I find recycling dental mouthwash bottles much better as they are flat so easier to pack, and the lid seals.

Awesome cookset and ideas! I’ll try the barbecue paint For preheating the stove on cold weather and such I usually have a tiny squirt bottle and pour a little alcohol on the outter platform of the burner so it heats up faster. You can also simply use any thing metal can lid under the burner with a little alcohol, light the preheater first and if the flame doesn’t transfer to the main burner when the bottom one runs out, just light the one on top. Cheerio

I have a very similar cook set, It is a Kookabura brand one, labeled designed in Australia, made in China. The burner that came with it wan not very good but I all ready had some spare Trangia burners handy so I used one of them in the cook set. The only problem I fount was that there was not enough room in the pot holder to effectively use the full range of the snuffer/flame regulator inside the holder. On the flip side, my test showed that this cook set could boil half a litre (500ml) in less than 5 mins when the air temp was cool or not at all when the air temp was above 30℃. With a normal Trangia burner, the recommended amount of water to be added to the alcohol is about 15%. With my cook set I had to use about 25%, maybe 30% when it was over 30℃ otherwise the fuel seemed to evaporate very fast and burn and flare out with a few minutes. When using the frying pan/lid/plate to fry up some meat, it was fine, I just had to turn it a bit more often.

Hi Blackie, I subscribed to you a while ago and making my way through your back catalogue when I came across this pearl. Your knock-off stove set is almost identical to my 1958 military surplus Trangia Ranger. It uses the same larger Trangia as in the M40 and M44 but to all intent and purposes is the same as yours. Having the larger burner means no simmer ring which sometimes makes cooking a “fast” experience, however I’m getting used to it now and a bit more confidence to boot. Have a search online for the Trangia Ranger and you will see the odd one showing on the internet. Thanks for the great videos and keep posting. All the best, Broadlander

I just finally subscribed to your channel. Thanks for the review. I have found that the old saying is usually true, “you get what you pay for”. I have several of the Trangia model 27‘s and absolutely love them. I found the best way to time the fuel is to pour in 1 ounce of alcohol and light it and time it. Then I repeat process with two ounces, Light it, time it until it goes out. Naturally I do it while heating a meal or water for a cup of tea, no sense in wasting alcohol! Gives you a fair idea of fuel consumption/ time rate.

I’ve been making Bree or clarified butter because you don’t have to keep your butter 🧈 in a refrigerator. My stoves all have to high of heat and burn every I started using my Transient 27 to cook it down with it burns all the fuel in about 15 minutes but if you have the sniffer cap opened 2/3 of the way open it takes a few minutes longer to bring it to a boil but it will keep it boiling for over an hour it takes around 30 minutes to cook down a pound of butter to fill a pint jar and I can do 2 pounds and still have about 1/3 of the fuel I started with. If you don’t have to boil water in 5 minutes or less you can cook a little bit longer and you don’t have to burn everything and believe it or not here are other things to cook besides ramen nodes. Another thing I do is I have a round pot ring from a old gas stove that fits on the top of the transen stove and the knock off you’re showing the wind screen is tapered and it you don’t use the pots that come with the set they just drop down to the tapered sides and snuffed out the 🔥 fire

Not a Trangia knock off but an Optimus 77 or it's military equivalent. I was given an Optimus 77 in the mid 70's, direct from Sweden, and it was my mountaineering/canoeing stove for the next decade and a half until I got a Trangia for two of us to use. And the rest is history. And yes you can bake in it!!

You have a slight problem with your theory on burn times for the Trangia burner. Burn times vary with difference in volume, as in, 1/2 of the original volume will not give you the same burn time as the first halve. I can't explain all the scientific specifics but Hiram Cook did a whole video on the subject. If you want to know everything there is to know about alcohol stoves, watch Hiram's videos. Nobody on KZfaq does more experimenting with them than he does. Also, wicking material in the walls of Chinese Trangia burner are basically non-existent, which in turn renders them far less efficient. Please don't take this as negativity as we are all here to learn. I've learned a lot from you over the years Blackie. My WC Blackbird (I tried to get an original for a long time, and finally settled for a Master Woodsman, another awesome WC knife) and my kuhkri are my all time favorite blades. I turned in to this video for the knockoff review which taught me that this kit was not for me. I just can't bring myself to do flimsy. EDIT - Let me count the ways and reasons I hate Spell check ; 1 - Above I wrote Hiram Cook Spell check wrote Biden Cook, WTF? 2 - I wrote "watch Hiram's videos" Spell check wrote - "watch Butane videos" So who are these moron spell check web designers that think they know more about what I am writing than I do.
