How to derive the transmission matrix (one of the parts of the transfer matrix in the Transfer Matrix Method). This matrix relates the electric fields on one side of an interface to the electric fields on the other, and allows us to rather easily calculate the reflection and transmission of an optical structure.
Hope you found this video helpful, please post in the comments below anything I can do to improve future videos, or suggestions you have for future videos.

Hi! Sir, Is propagation matrix is same for every medium even for transparent glass substrate?

would be nice in the end if u could ties this and show how u matrices plugged in for M and solve the thing. thanx

nice done! Yet, normal incidence is pretty straight forward. The CEM-Lectures guy provides a more general form but its really hard to understand. Would have loved to see a more intiutive approach but I guess that's the price you pay for generality.

Dear Jordan how you rearrange the second equation we have E0r instead of E1r it is somehow confusing the rearrangment of the matrix THANKS for your replay in advance

How to apply this in transverse magnetic and transverse electric case? How do I know which one of them being demonstrated in the video?

I know it's been too long for you to need the answer, but for people in the future checking the comments: At the end, he mentions that this works for both TE and TM. The r and t coefficients will have different equations depending on if TE or TM.

Definitely actually go out there and *do* some engineering. If you attend a university, then doing research at your university is a great way to get experience (most of what I have done), or getting an internship or working on projects with friends.

Hi, I am an electrical and electronics engineering student. I am working on a project about photonic crystal structures. I have to learn about Transfer Matrix Method with all details. However, I could not find an expressive book. Do you have a recommendation for me? Also, thanks for the video. It helped me a lot.

Ahhh photonic crystals. Sure there is “Optics in Layered Media” by Yeh. It’s an older book but treats the transfer matrix method in detail.
