TransferWise Borderless Account Review // bit.ly/2BVefRb
UPDATE: TransferWise now support payout of global USD to majority of countries.
This is done via SWIFT and so there are slightly higher costs associated with global USD payouts than their standard fee.
Fee structure for the sender: TransferWise fee + $2 (or equivalent in sender's home currency).
These payments are made via the SWIFT network and note that the recipient may also be charged a fee by their bank for receiving the global USD. TransferWise are not able to predict exactly how much this charge may be to the recipient as it is up to their bank.

Note you don't need the borderless account feature just to convert and move money from one country to another. What it's mostly good for is receiving money from third parties. However those payments must be electronic, no checks allowed.

The video is useful and simply explained. One thing that got missed here is that to add money to borderless account there is a fee, so for e.g in case of USD to EUR, If you top-up your borderless account there will be a fee for top-up 1st then if you convert within borderless from USD to EUR there will be additional fee then at end to withdraw funds from borderless to external bank account even in same currency (as this video also mentioned ) there will be additional fee. So it would be great if you can another video explaining which way is better directly transferring funds from external bank to depositing in another external bank account using transferwise as mediator. Or doing the same using borderless account because in the latter it involve fees at 3 different stages --> Top-up fee --> conversion fee --> withdrawing funds externally fee

great video! It's a pain keeping track of my bank accounts in other countries, and additionally it's annoying when they charge you a fee for just having account (like ANZ in Australia). Looking forward to ditching my overseas accounts and replacing them with my transfer wise one. Hopefully one day I'll be able get rid of my swiss bank account too - which I'm sure will happen over time.

Receiving money is free only if you use bank transfer, however this applies only to a few countries (those in which TW accounts physically reside). In most other cases you have to use debit/credit card payment and there is a fee.

Hi Alessandro! With the Borderless account you'd be able to hold CAD in the account, but you can only have local bank details for the US, UK, Australia and Eurozone (at this stage). So you could hold CAD in the account, but you wouldn't be able to pay out locally in Canada. Let me know if that helps :)

I like your video. However many banks already offer "borderless" accounts and due to the convenience and security, many customers are willing to accept some transaction fees (yours are touted as "0%"?). Is there an updated video to showcase other innovations in the pipeline? e.g. payments or transfers in cryptocurrencies? Also, have you addressed the limitation of being able to pay counterparties in foreign currencies?

I have been with you for many years now and love TW! But I have never understood how to use my Borderless account. I have USD in US Bank, a EUR Borderless TW account and a Spanish bank account where I live. I want to send USD to my TW Borderless account and then convert to EUR and send to my Spanish bank as needed. Is this a good idea? What is the limit of USD I can send and is it per day, month or year? Please advise how to send from my US bank to my Borderless. Thank you!

Ok this is a big point of confusion here for many. Point number 4 cons of borderless account. "You can only pay out of the account in the country to which you receive the funds. That means if you receive USD from the United States, you couldn't make a payment of USD to China from the account" So whats the point of opening a borderless USD account anyway?, when i can't withdraw from the borderless account to my local bank account in the local currency.

Transferwise is quite disappointing. It says it only takes 2 hours to get money sent to recipient bank. I chose the the fastest service option with the most expensive fee in the list, around £30, due to an urgent need but it has been three days and the money has hot arrived yet. The staff says that i have to wait 2 more working days. if i knew it would take that long i would have transferred money from my bank account with far cheaper fee but nearly the same length processing. Transferwise is definitely not a payment method you can count on.

Revolut is a major competitor, but while their conversion fees and local currency payment fees are low, their fees to pay and receive in currencies that aren't your local currency are high. TW wins if you're doing a lot of local bank-to-bank transfers. Revolut wins if you only need to pay money via a credit card. And Starling wins in the UK and Euro as far as fees go.

Wow, it is the real deal. I have dealt with international transfers for personal business and it has been a nightmare! Brokers charge way too much and will take an indeterminate amount of time (1-2 weeks) as they delay for the best exchange rate. My U.S bank charges $35 just to wire money and charge about 3% for exchange rate. PayPal adds about 3% and a flat fee for exchange rate. I transferred $22 USD to Polish 82 PLN at the REAL exchange rate (3.89) and was charged $.97.(4.4%) my U.S. bank charged me $10 and waved the $35 wire fee only once because I have a long standing relationship ($8+$35 on $21 is 204%) even with waiving the transfer fee it was ($8 on $21 = 38%) . Great for sending and receiving small amounts to individuals around the world!

@TheCurrencyShop 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, If you already have bank accounts in the countries you need them, you can simply use TransferWise to transfer the funds from one to another. The Borderless Account allows people who don't have bank accounts in the US, Europe, UK, or Australia to essentially have local bank details in those countries. And in Europe and the UK, this includes a debit card to access those funds.

Can I use this account to pay for example my Netflix subscription and make it seen by Netflix as if I paid via USA-based bank account? Does it need any additional settings?
@tariik.h
@tariik.h 5 жыл бұрын
You can pay via credit / debit card or PayPal. So it will only work with the TransferWise account if you've got the debit card mentioned in the video. Also, be aware that Netflix only provides access to licensed content for the country that you are accessing it from, so no matter where in the world your account is registered, you will always get the same content in your country. Your only potential benefit could be if you expect the USD price to be cheaper than your local price. Also, you would need to connect to a VPN or proxy to set up your account. However, it probably violates Netflix's TOS which could lead them to terminate your account. TLDR: Probably not a good idea.

Hi Radhey, you just need one TransferWise account. If you're making a transfer from the USA to India, you would set up the TransferWise account, transfer the USD to them and they would transfer the money to the Indian bank account. The Borderless Account can be opened from within your TransferWise account, and this gives you access to local bank details in Australia, the US, UK and Europe, however you can also hold INR in the account. The process would then be the same to get it into an Indian bank account. Does this answer your question? :)

Quick question. I just opened the Borderless account, added the money as requested, validated identity and requested the card (just in case). I work online and I receive money in USD, Euro and GPB. I have 2 bank accounts: one in GBP and one in Euros. So let's say someone pays me in GBP and I want to immediately transfer that money to my real bank account. Do I simply need to "send money" to my own bank with no fees? (just like the "withdraw" function on Paypal so to speak? Thanks! Also, I mainly opened this account for when I get paid in USD from Amazon.com as I don't have a US Bank account, I hope the conversion rate to transfer the USD into one of my bank accounts is more convenient than Paypal. Those fees and conversions are killing me.

Im a little confused - you refer to a person's account, yet[to my understanding] transferwise doesnt have accounts in the sense of a bank maintaining a person's funds. Where does the borderless account maintain the funds? Im sure Im not getting something ...

Hi just wondered the £200 limit at foreign ATMs is that within a 'chronological month' eg July or say if I was away and it was last two weeks of July and first two weeks of August could I do two 'feeless' transactions as I am there in two different months. Thanks

Hi Peter! This is an excellent question - we're not actually sure. We'll get in touch with TransferWise and let you know as soon as we do!

Hi Peter - thanks for your patience! We spoke to TransferWise and the limit applies to a 30 day period, not the calendar month. So in your example, you would only be able to make £200 withdrawal without fees in that four week period. I hope that helps!

Hi, I have a problem in opening an account. My bank doesn't allow transfer with Tranferwise so at the moment of opening an account, I can't send 30 AUD in order to activate it and get the bank details. Can I send the 30 dollars from any other bank also if is not under my name? I only want to activate it. No one knows this or mention it. Hope you can reply.

Would you say that the TransferWise account could completly replace the traditional bank account right now?
@TheCurrencyShop
@TheCurrencyShop 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. There are still some things that a traditional bank account can do, that the Borderless Account cannot. For example, you can't deposit cash into the Borderless Account, you need to transfer the funds electronically. Or you can't gain interest on the balance in your account. It's a very good product, but it might be a while before it can completely replace a traditional bank account.

so from the way I see it, a transferwise account can be recognised and it can work like a payoneer or paypal account

TransferWise is not a payment gateway. The borderless account is like a multi currency account.

Will a transferwise account allow me to transfer money to an Israel bank account from my U.S. Bank account?

Hi James! TransferWise are definitely able to transfer money between USD and ILS. You can go their website to get a quote: bit.ly/2EeS71U Hope this helps!

I don't understand this. In video, point 4 says: "Can only pay out funds in the country in which they were received". Isn't it in conflict with this point?
@TheCurrencyShop
@TheCurrencyShop 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, You're right! The Borderless Account wouldn't let you do this, but TransferWise also offer just a money transfer service. In James' example, there wouldn't be the need for the Borderless Account. He asked if he could make a transfer to Israel from his US bank account (we assumed he meant an actual account with a US bank), which is possible. Hope this helps clarify!

So if I have a small UK business, but I am being paid by an Italian company in Euros, what information do I need to provide the Italian company with so they can pay me. What do I need to do on Transferwise? I would want the money to be converted from Euros to GBP.
@TheCurrencyShop
@TheCurrencyShop 6 жыл бұрын
Hi TeeTee, When you open up a Borderless Account you will be able to have an IBAN number. You can provide that to the Italian company who will then pay you as they would if they were making a local payment in Italy. Once the Euros were in your borderless account you could choose whether to leave them, or convert them to GBP. If you do convert them, TransferWise do this at the interbank rate at the time of conversion and will charge a percentage based fee.

Note that this just gets it as far as your GBP account IN Transferwise. Now to take that money out, for example to get it to your regular high street bank account in GBP, Transferwise will charge another fee. If I'm not mistaken. And this is where it stops making sense. Because if I understand correctly, you can use your GBP balance within transferwise to pay someone else in the UK to their high street bank for free but if you want to take money out to your own bank then there's a charge?
