Critique time! More Than Meets the Eye (MTMTE) was waaaay better than Lost Light. While I like Lost Light, what were its biggest issues that made people upset?
Both comics are very popular from the postwar part of IDW Transformers

Another important note is some people are upset that Getaway is made into a very evil narcissist. He does really horrible disturbing things just because!

This is pretty much in line with every other Autobot villain Roberts used. I think a lot of people confused Getaway's exploiting the crew's genuine dissatisfaction with Megatron being on board with sincerity, despite the man using a brainwashing gun to set up his coup. Or maybe they thought Roberts would use a little more nuance despite every other antagonist in the book going explosively broad, idk.

“Why did everyone just forgive Megatron?” Meanwhile TFP “Yeah I know I’ve done millions of war crimes and stuff but I’ma dip” “Yeah sure go for it man” “Thanks man” “You said sorry so it’s good” “Prime he took my voice and tried to take over my body!” “He said sorry so we good right?”

Great video. Regarding the whole "Megatron suddenly being forgiven felt way too...sudden" 1-second-mention, I've got to say, as someone who loves Megatron's redemption arc in IDW1, it never felt that the world just suddenly forgave Megatron for his past sins, at least that's how I saw it. Megatron joining the Lost Light crew was basically a form of exile from Cybertron. Megatron had just undergone trial and humiliation before joining the Lost Light crew. When Megatron was thought to be dead at the start of Lost Light, Ultra Magnus started questioning if he truly had forgiven Megatron for his past war crimes. During the entirety of MTMTE, every Decepticon Megatron met kept reminding him of his past and all the changes he caused, encouraging him to be a Decepticon again, and Megatron himself expressed lots of times the amount of self-hatred he now had. In a way, Megatron during the MTMTE run wasn't 100% an Autobot. He truly became an Autobot at the end of MTMTE, during the final battle against the DJD. A youtuber called Nemesis Bloodryche made a fantastic video called "One Villainous Scene: The Tale of Armada Starscream" and in the comment section of that video I wrote a deep analysis as to why Megatron taking out the DJD was the perfect ending to his arc, the final step at truly becoming an Autobot and my One Villainous Scene. In conclusion, as I stated before, I am one of the people who love Megatron's redemption arc in MTMTE, but I actually understand where most of the haters of that redemption arc come from and I even admit that a few plot points could have been handled better (for example, it would be great to see Megatron finally making amends with Starscream, even tho I like that Megatron until the end had regrets for that and it even adds some more tragedy to his arc). Still, I still hold IDW1 Megatron as one of my favourite fictional characters of all time, but if you don't like him, hey, more power to you.

I totally agree. Literally all Megatron does in MTMTE is related to the horrible things he's done in the past and trying to return to being the conciencious person he once was. The whole climax of MTMTE is caused by the autobots on the Lost Light still HATING him. The only potentially rushed part of his story happened in Dark Cybertron where he does decide to turn to the Autobots but even then Roberts had written stories like Chaos Theory that showed his pacifistic origins to back it up.

I completely agree with you. Other thing I would like to point out is the difference between TFP (Predacon's rising ending) Megatron and MTMTE Megatron bc once I had this conversation about what happened to TFP Megatron after he realized his mistakes. Of course, I don't think he would do anything after that, just hiding in a cave that no one knows where it is and die slowly at the hands of guilt. Maybe he's not even sure what to be guilty about. Bc that's the thing: IDW Megatron wasn't suddenly an Autobot. Yes, he turned suddenly into a nice guy (I mean, he was a nice guy before he was failed so many times by the Cybertronian system) but that didn't make him good nor an Autobot at all. Bumblebee gave him that, then Starscream with his speech, then Optimus with his request, then Rodimus in more than one occasion, then all the things that happened at that world where they confronted the DJD (the flower scene, Ravage's last words, innocent lives at stake, Skids' words about what being at Autobot is, Terminus' words, etc) and A LOT else. At one point we even have him using Rodimus and Minimus as his moral anchors. Bc that's what they are to him. They aren't just characters that happen to be there while he was redeeming himself, they were who shaped him. He would be a total different bot if it wasn't for the Lost Light, for Bee and OP. But the change is so smooth, oh so smooth, that most ppl don't even realize. You only realize when you start thinking if TFP Megatron would be the same being on his own during his change

What you're saying is true, but the main reason I personally really dislike Megatron's redemption arc is that the main victims of his genocidal policies, the various organic species the Decepticons killed in enormous numbers, never get a say in it. This might be dumb but I found it really frustrating how when organics did appear they were treated as irrelevant or actually corrupt (like the Galactic Council and Black Block Consortia) (and the Black Block Consortia being formed specifically to protect organic species from the Cybertronians' war was framed as just a protection racket), and the fact that the Decepticons harmed a lot of organic species far more than they harmed even the Cybertronians was never seriously grappled with. By the time of Remain in Light, Megatron still showed that he valued mechanical life over organic life. The other characters admonished him for it, but to me it kind of unraveled the entire idea of his redemption. It would be like a Nazi character (actually literally Hitler would be more fitting for this analogy lol) seeming to have a genuine change of heart and then being blatantly antisemitic. And even if he did really, completely change, it wasn't just for Rodimus and his friends on the Lost Light to decide if it was good enough. In my opinion, it wasn't even mainly for the Cybertronians to decide. I would genuinely have liked to see a Galactic Council (or other representation of organic victims of Decepticon genocide) court try and convict Megatron and sentence him to a trillion years in prison or just execute him lol. That's just how I feel though, because I feel like the organic genocide stuff gets dismissed and it's frustrating to me.

@@cartanacia79Interesting perspective and it could be argued to be some truth to it. I don't remember that akward part in Remain of Light that you brought up, so I won't comment anything to defend or criticise it aside from the fact that the way you presented it makes it seem to me more like a writing error that thankfully didn't have an impact on the rest of Megatron's story. If I'm wrong, guess that this is not the first time Lost Light fumbled a continuation from More Than Meets The Eye. I'd argue that everything that came afterwards still supports Megatron's arc up until that point. As for you, feel free to consider that moment as merely a character inconsistency, a total character assassination or anything in between. As for Megatron being judged by the Galactic Council, that actually happened. This is how Megatron's ends. He gets sent to his trial and Magnus stated that the only two ways it can end is execution or imprisonment for life and in a way, that is the perfect way to end his story. A youtuber called Roadrustle made a video called "A video about Megatron" where when reaching IDW1's section he described his arc as not so much of redemption as of retribution and I've got to agree. Megatron's story as an Autobot is the story of a person who has committed countless atrocitoes and has accepted any and all punishments that fate has for him, but before he gets punished, he decides to handle his final moments by his own terms, in his case, he will not let his final moments go to waste and instead he will ensure that he will accomplish something unquestionably good and once he does so, he will accept any fate and punishment the universe may have for him. And that is what ultimately happened. The Megatron we've been following during Roberts' entire run succeeds his goal, he manages to fix some of the damage that he caused, he truly saves an alternate universe the way he couldn't save his own by leading an actually uncorrupted rebellion, he accomplishes his dream of becoming a doctor if only for a moment (in a cybertronian life span), he ultimately helped and saved the Lost Light, he gave the crew actually happy memories with him, he achieved his goal and now he will accept his punishment by those he wronged and will leave this world in a cell or in a box, but he will leave this world on a high note after helping fixing at least some of the mess he caused and may the rest of the universe receive the catharsis and right of judging him, punishing him and remembering him as they wish, all the while in another world another Megatron with another Lost Light rose to do more good and more adventures. Megatron's story can be argued to have been a bit biased on a few points and it definitely requires the reader to accept the mere foundation of this arc, but I'd argue that they managed to deliver an ending that just feels right, at least for me. I'd argue that even the more ambiguous stuff add to that "just right" feel. As for the Galactic Council, although I don't remember everything about them, I do feel that at least when connected to Megatron's story they were mostly used well and they did get to be the ones ultimately judging his fate. I guess it would be interesting to see more perspectives from more races in regards to Megatron's trial, but you could argue that the Galactic Council at Megatron's final trial were a solid representation of that. I don't really have anything else to add to that. There is a small fan-page to the Tfwiki dedicated to people expressing/fixing issues they have with Megatron's story as an Autobot. It's an interesting read and I recommend it.

But if you want evil just look at what the council did, exsprementing on lows, slavery, permited brainwashing, firing miners when the mines still have enorgon just to make new factorys and let's not forget what ford, pharma, trapan and the wrake job who exsperamented on arcee they did worse and really trapan messed with megatron's head.poor guy has ptsd because of him. It shouldn't have worked but I thought it did. He didn't get off, he was still executed in the end. He did not redeem himself, but he did go a long way toward balancing the scales a bit in the Functionist Universe. I've read a lot of comic book redemption arcs. Megatron was one where there was never any illusions. People just assume that his putting the badge on was him getting off, failing to understand ALL OF THEM ARE WAR CRIMINALS. The greater universe hates them all for their millions of years of stomping all over everything as if nobody else exists.

I think Lost Light turned out rushed and bad because IDW1 was ending and Hasbro might have been pointing a gun at James to just shoehorn random plot points and character deaths into the comic series just for the sake of conflict and angst because otherwise he's a fantastic writer weird mech pregnancy fetishes aside and he definitely could have turned lost light into a masterpiece if he was given 50 issues for it just like mtmte. Honestly I've seen the redemption thing tried time and time again and Megatron's is by far the best I've seen, and I was a total skeptic before I read it. He is not forgiven easily. Everyone is skeptic of him until he proves himself, or until they have no choice but to trust him, and even then MOST of the LL crew save the main cast try to up and get rid of him. Even the main cast absolutely despises him at first, Rodimus straight up tells him that he deserves to die and that the rest of them will party when he does lmao. The only thing that saves him is the fact that Optimus vowed a fair trial and Megatron found a loophole in that he could plea that he could only be judged fairly by the Knights of Cybertron. I thought it might have been a bit sudden at first but after rereading Dark Cybertron I don't think so anymore. You can see all of the points adding up in his head - he's weak and being used as a pawn and he's accepted that he's lost the war. At first he's using Bee to save his own ass but comes to realize through him that the Autobots aren't the same Autobot senate that oppressed people like him and that if the bots are capable of idealistic change after such a fall from grace then so is he. When he sees Starscream, he realizes that he lost the war the moment he began fighting, because he no longer held the peoples' favor. All of these add up, and even then after he switches sides he's far from being a true Autobot which is something Skids reminds him of in Dying of the Light. IDW Megatron simply never had evil intentions from the get-go until he becomes power-hungry but when he loses all that power and experiences his own downfall he falls back to Earth (Cybertron?). This point is reinforced by the fact that as soon as Megatron wields power once more whilst dominating the battlefield in Dying of the Light, he begins to become corrupted again until Terminus reminds him of his humble origins and one true goal. I guess in the context of Dark Cybertron things could've been drawn out a bit more but Dark Cybertron was a small spinoff and for what it was it did its job perfectly in being a bridge between Megatron's arcs and from that point forward his character writing is just *chef's kiss* I could rant for HOURS about it. Honestly one of the best written characters I've seen or read in ANY media, and I'm a SUCKER for analyzing good writing.

Lug should've been kept dead. Biggest problem: Anode bringing her back, frame, personality, memories and all, from a snowflake and a spark residue breaks the world (they could've resurrected all the blue flowers on Necroworld with enough sentio metallico and a good blacksmith??) Then Lug really doesn't do much, and it felt out of place for her and Anode to be included in Rodimus' motivational speech at the end. It might've been more impactful for Anode to permanently lose Lug, and bond with the rest of the cast (like Nautica) through that loss and become more of a part of Team Rod. There are time-travel implications that could've been explored (Novikov self-consistency principle idk), Anode could be stuck thinking about why it was just her that was saved and do something rash that throws everything off the rails and push the plot. I do like her and Lug's story, but it could've been explored some other way. Maybe Lug gets to be alive in the Functionist Universe and even though everything there is terrible FU Anode has the love of her life and we'd care more about what goes on there. I guess Anode and Lug are supposed to be introduction characters for readers who pick up LL before MTMTE, but really Lug's presence throughout was redundant and Anode could've been more interesting on her own.

My biggest issue with Lost Light is how all the plot lines just wrap up in absurd ways that just feel super dues ex machina. Like "the only way we can fix this is if we had primus.... SURPRISE, lucky us, he's been on our ship the wholeeee time" or the whole hospital planet being the cyberutopia they were looking for just felt like such a cop out and not something planned from the beginning. just sorta felt like "oh, we're supposed to be wrapping up the plot soon?? better just make cybertutopia wherever they happen to be right now". Also ngl I kinda hate the art style compared to MTMTE, everything just feels like softer and chibi-er and it was super jarring at first to transition to that
@zzz7903
@zzz7903 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair Rung was hinted to have the brightest spark back towards the beginning, and even when revealed as Primus he wasn't at all overpowered. Theme-wise the climax made sense, plot-wise......okay maybe a little convenient that Vector Sigma can be overloaded from Cybertron's hot spots using the Matrix, which I still haven't figured out the functions nor the limits of (I think Ratchet once used it to heal somebody's leg??? And the Matrix was what had saved Vector Sigma from the Heart of Darkness thing??) I was more baffled at what the AVL has been doing to let an entire planet's modification go unnoticed (Megatron you've gotta be a more competent resistance leader than that) I guess one of the ideas in LL was to break down mythology and show those revered figures and stories to be the underwhelming truths they are, and through that elevate the decidedly mortal and flawed protagonists -- in how they deal with such disappointments and subversions to what has been such a big part of their culture and in the past few years their purpose, in how they reflect the best parts of these myths, the inspirations and dreams that reality didn't live up to, through their heroics, and create their own legends. So to me the Cyberutopia reveal didn't seem too out of place in the context of what LL was trying to do, though the execution did feel rushed. Overall LL did have less setup than MTMTE, which I now realize has foreshadowing back in Phase 1 nothing can compare against Alex Milne

I just want to put this here and say that I personally think the claim that Megatron was "forgiven" is entirely incorrect and misinterpreted. I wont claim his "redemption" was perfect. Megatrons story got bautched in certain segments. Mainly those adressing his acts of Genocide and the fact that we never really see any of the characters warming up to him. Which is really messed up considering they're willing to accept a genocidal tyrant without a page showing it. But I entirely disagree with the statement he was forgiven. This entire track is just an extended path towards his very likely execution. Megatron even said he was aware of what he did in the end and would accept the verdict that was coming. This was less a redemption, for his crimes cannot be forgiven and his deeds cannot be redeemed. This was the story of him making peace with his legacy and accomplishing one thing in his life that did not make him a monster. Keep in mind that despite him trying to save *the goddamn universe* he is not treated as a hero. He still can't open the matrix and his story does not end on a Happy note, but is instead showing his last moments of freedom before he meets his judge. "Rodimus. Whatever happens next - whatever my fate - I deserve worse" And this is'nt even mentioning the symbolism behind Tarn that everyone is sleeping on. (Also im ignoring the alternate reality because it kinda breaks the whole story for me and I would like to keep Megatrons arc as *NIGH* perfect as possible.) So yeah, just my thoughts spat out in a giant mess of a comment. Im sorry

@@vaggos2003 I've read it and I totally agree. I personally really like how Tarn is a symbol for Megatrons legacy, in every way possible. I love how MTMTE managed to make understand and sympathize with the worst a sentient being can be, without turning into a nonesensical mess many other medias did with their tyrants. They managed to take the story from 2005 and finish it in such a perfectly told way. Without forcing the reader to forgive him. I almost wish he had sacrificed himself because in my eyes it might have been the best way to end his arc. By doing something good for once in his life, and destroying his legacy. He may die a Decepticon, because the things he did can't be forgiven. But he won't die a monster. Tarn is quite simple for a villain when you want to look deeply into him. But succeeds in a critical way at being a villain I have only seen TFA do before. With his and Megatron character dynamic. Tarn forces Megatron to do things he could not normally, and being the sole reason why I understand Megatrons arc the way I do. He succeeds at the most basic thing any villain needs to do, effect the hero. Something I never find nowadays. And for that Tarn remains as one of my Top 5 TF villains.

Reading lost light hurts me, It is a damn good comic, one of the best I have ever read but it feels like I can only read the TLDR of it. Maybe the Nautica forgetting Skids story would have had a purpose, maybe Chromedome would find out and try to find a way to help her remember her friendship with Skids because of his own regret at forgetting his partners before Rewind. That seems like a story MTMTE would tell, maybe Sunder and Froid would have been involved, perhaps they bought Nautica's grief and there would be a battle between them and Chromedome. Maybe Megatron in Functionalist Land would have gotten a few arcs? Maybe it would have been an IDW take on shattered glass? (the FL Orion Pax phone call went nowhere), we could see him try and convince Orion to be a good person, or be struggling with the Idea that the moral pillar of heroism Optimus Prime is a horrific creature of the society he lives in (not unlike what Megatron was.) What if the ASL found out about Megatrons past as a genocidal tyrant? how would they react to this knowledge?. Maybe Anode and Lug were meant to add literally anything of value to the story? What if Tailgates revival had any sort of explanation beyond "Idk science or somethin"? what if The Scavengers were actually meant to arrive at Grimlocks Cell? maybe they would have to start a prison break from whoever runs it now? maybe Ratchet was going to slowely develop his illness overtime? maybe he would try to hide it from others? It would probably have something to do with the Cybertopia arc. We know for a fact that Lost Light was meant to be longer, James himself has said so. These ideas may not be accurate to what could have been... what *should* have been, but it is clear that these stories are bastardisations of what they once were. If I was a betting man I would guess that Lost Light is 40-60% complete. Storylines start and make progress before being dropped for the next. I think the only stories that was mostly unaltered was the Getaway three part arc, (I think its better than most MTMTE arcs) and How To Say Goodbye And Mean It part 2. HTSGAMIP2 is honestly fantastic. I have a feeling that it is almost entirely unaltered from its original plan. I adore the almost depressing tone of the ending, It makes the very end, where we see Lost Light 2(3?) in the new universe all the more happy, the series has almost entirely been a rollercoaster of Depression and Joy. It just... I struggle to put it elegantly as you can tell but it just works incredibly. One more thing, One last thing... ever notice how most TF things only get 3 Seasons or entries? Animated, Prime, RID(2015), Unicron *Trilogy* , Cyberverse, Beast Wars, WFC/FOC/ROTDS, G1(kinda?) and MTMTE/Lost Light. weird right?

NAUTICA REMEMBERS HER FRIENDSHIP WITH SKIDS. She does not have the emotional attachment to it anymore. She never sacrificed her memories, those were not on the table. G1 had four seasons. Season four is just a few episodes, but it's still generally referred to as season four. The whole thing with the Headmasters/Targetmasters and the Plasma Energy Chamber is season four. But it's not just Transformers. Three seasons is fairly typical of most things.

8:03 Thank you very much for mentioning that. At first I felt very lost and confused, but the whole Scavengers-thing was nothing compared to the upsetting fact that Tailgate returned literally out of NOWHERE. I know, all of you Cygate fans are going to attack me but whatever. Ever since Tailgate had this extremely traumatic experience (or panick attack if you will) and got all his "superpowers", not only did he become more annoying than he was before, but he was also constantly showing off for no reason. His confidence skyrocketed (again, for no reason at all, because while using his powers he unintentionally and unknowingly hurt himself, plus he remained just as gullible as he was before: Getaway had no problem manipulating him and turning him against Cyclonus) and now he was the one, who behaved in a very toxic and ignorant way instead of just asking his partner about his feelings or just you know, showing any interest in him. Cyclonus tried so hard and desperately to take care of him (even if it meant putting his own life at risk for the hundredth time) but Tailgate just did not listen. He basically refused to discuss things, and because of his immaturity (I think the whole "I just don't want to hurt him" thing was an excuse, let's face it, that problem could have been solved if discussed properly but again, whatever) chose the "easy way" and decided to push Cyclonus away break up with him. Poor thing did not deserve that. I'm not saying that this painful separation and Tailgates death (because staying in that machine for that long equals certain death) wasn't sad, but I felt surprisingly calm and was happy for Cyclonus that he finally had the chance to overcome this toxic relationship and with time just forget about it, because he deserved much better than a "child". And then it turns out on Mederi, where everyone and everything is fake that Tailgate is the only one truly alive.....? Because he survived and teleported thanks to some magical stuff no one knew about...? The whole concept is just so random and absurd, I just can't. In the end, my only question is: Why? A happy ending for the sake of a happy ending. (And what if this wasn't really a happy ending...?) It doesn't make sense to me at all.

Oh yes, I just finished reading Lost Light (along with the rest of Phase 3) & Tailgate infuriated me & I really didn't like the first half of LL in general until Getaway's plot moved forward. It would've been interesting to see how Cyclonous dealt with the grief of losing a toxic partner, then moving on to be happy. I loved the ship in MTMTE & still do, but how they went about it felt off in LL.

I am one of the biggest Cygate fans and I find your take pretty valid. We should've had more panel time for them to reconcile and for Tailgate to apologize. Thing is, I understand Tailgate's mistakes, but Cyclonus was making his own by trying to take all of the pain onto his own shoulders. They were making the same mistakes in slightly different ways. Cyclonus' consistent problem throughout the series was never talking about his feelings proper to anyone but Whirl, and it bit them both in the ass. Narratively, I think that justification is fine. After all the suffering both of them went through, I felt they learned enough. It was a satisfying conclusion. If Tailgate had truly died on Mederi, I would have nothing good to say about the series. I was so sick of Lost Light turning Cyclonus into an emotional, neurotic wreck by that point that I was in tears when Tailgate was this close to vanishing forever. Cyclonus learning to love, just to have it taken away from him, would be infinitely crueler than anything and I thank Primus (and the writers) that they didn't pursue that route after they already killed off the original Rewind. I'm so sick and tired of LGBT+ couples suffering in stories.

Unpopular opinion: Roller should’ve been the introduction character for new fans coming into Lost Light instead of Anode and Lug. He had tons of potential as a ’bot who missed the entire war and needed to learn to navigate a universe ravaged by both Autobots and Decepticons. Roller could’ve been the ideal representation of the audience through bonding with different crew members. It also would’ve been interesting to see his reaction to several of his old allies being dead (Skids) or becoming murderers (Damus & Shockwave). And yeah, I think Getaway should’ve been a much more nuanced character too. I feel he was made a one-dimensional narcissist just because he had a problem with Megatron.

Ngl I actually liked how the whole thing with the knights of cybertron and the guiding hand played out in the end. Plus, I’m actually quite okay with Ratchet’s death and Rewind’s entrapment. Everyone gets back together after a few years to show what happened after everything finished and the mourn the death of a loved one. Not everyone’s stayed in touch but they’re living their own lives. Some amazing, some okay, some better than others but most, if not all barring a grieving drift and a perpetually bored Rodimus, happy. They couldn’t have adventures till the end of time and the comic mostly recognises that, while also saying they could’ve had more. As much as I’d have liked to see more wacky shite go on, I’m sad to see it end, but I’m happy with how it ended

lost light was good and I greatly enjoyed reading it, though I also definitely agree with all these aspects here (although personally I think megatron’s arc was well done). anyways I think the biggest issue was probably the runtime- with mtmte james roberts was allowed to expand into 50 whole issues but now that he was given only half of that he probably had to jump around and take a bunch of shortcuts, which definitely showed. it’s unfortunate and I wish lost light was longer so it could have properly fleshed everything out just as mtmte did and not have everything be so jarring, but oh well, it is what it is.

Warning: Spolers ahead. 1-Your criticism feels wrong to me. There´s lots to critcise Lost Light for, but sadness was part of the original series... Rewind´s death, Pipes, Skids, Ravage, Brainstorm´s lover, even Tarn losing it in the end... 2- Rung being forgotten was foreshadowed from the fact others couldn´t even remember his name properly... like in the annual. Rong of the Pious Pools, alt mode ornament ID card. And his death was predictable the moment he said he could make 3 matrixes, but then had to make 10 to not kill all the alt-universe civilians. 3-Nautica forgetting Skids was how she managed to avoid being brainwashed by Mederi, freeing the Scavengers. 4- Aren´t the only characters technically older than Ratchet basically Cyclonus, Tailgate and Rung? Tailgate almost died of age during Tyrest history, Cyclonus got a longer life due to the Dead Universe, and Rung was ... well, Primus. Drift is far younger than Ratchet by a lot. 5- The Rewind part is sad, but again, foreshadowed from how his memories kept getting jumbled with the functionist universe history. 6- Sadly, the quick deaths are due to how rushed the series was... it was damn obvious James needed twice as many issues as he had to finish the history. You can feel it in how fast the gods revelations came, how both of Anode´s histories got aborted, and how the Scavengers had to take a few pages in the Muttinees trilogy. Not mentioning how Thunderclash and Grimlock mention what could have been a great adventure as off-screen events, to the point both Swerve and Misfire complain that that recap was brutal and fast. Roberts needed another 40 issues, not 25, to finish the MTMTE history, but since the other series had tried to portrait Optimus as a fascist dictator (All Hail Optimus Prime) scrapped all of Starscream´s character development (Power of the Primes) and resurrected Bumblebee and SHockwave for no purpose (again, Power of the Primes), also scrapping all the build up Liege Maximo had had... and they remembered how DW had left their continuity unfinished. They wanted their own to have a proper ending, since Marvel had failed to have one too, and seeing the lack of sales as their looming end, set up a final number of issues. 7- The Magnificence is there because Rodimus is too. "I am not losing anybody, not this time". Rodimus said it in MTMTE 02. It always felt like a huge reminder of Spotlight Hot Rod... where the magnificence was introduced, what a coincidence! Hint: nope, not a freaking coincidence. 8- In the first issues, Anode and Lug being very little noticed is a trick so that you don´t realize that Lug isn´t actually there, just in Anode´s mind. Then again, Anode and Lug themselves do feel like forced into the history... specially because Anode´s history is aborted (she should have needed Rung´s photonic crystal to resurrect Lug, and the history was clearly building towards that, but I guess Anode is supposed to be a Strong Female Character so she can´t need Rung´s help, of course... Anode is a walking retcon, to be honest. She mentions she became female after being born in Caminus a male and meeting other species around the galaxy, but her alt-universe self is female and never left Cybertron. Clearly, Anode was a character shoved in by some stupid editor. 9- Only phase 1 comic that matters? (looks at Spotlight Blurr and Megatron Origins) Are you that forgetful? 10- Scorponok´s obsession with organic hybrids comes from his own Headmaster past (go back to Ultra Magnus Spotlight, Scalation, Spotlight Grimlock and Maximum Dinobots if you can´t remember that history, in that order!) 11- All that sadness with Ratchet´s funeral was to contrast with the moment you find out about the experiment and the other Lost Light that traveled to the new universe. I cried with that part! So as recap... James Roberts could have made the Lost Light just as perfect as MTMTE.... with twice as many issues and no editorial interference. And al in all, he did a damn good job within those limits.

I was as skeptical as many but Autobot Megatron really worked IMO. To your point, we clearly see that most of the Cybertronians in universe are NOT ok with Megatron invoking the right to be tried by the Knights. I agree with the crapiness of Nautica making herself forget Skids, but at least Roberts did tie in a plot point of her forgetfulness allowing her to see through the Mederi ruse. The Magnificence is significant because it's what's left of Epistemeus from the Guiding Hand. I agree about the weirdness of Scorponok's first born plan but when you consider he's a mad scientist in IDW and his obsession with organic vs robotic goes all the way back to Furman's Devastation and Maximum Dinobot series, it does kinda make sense for him character-wise. Anode and Lug were actually the only parts of Lost Light I didn't like, for the reason you mentioned: they're unfortunately just a diversity checkmark. Arcee and Aileron's relationship in Optimus Prime/Unicron was far better IMO. I do think Lost Light started very slow and took until really the Mutineer's Trilogy before I started appreciating it from there on unlike the first two "seasons," which were compelling from the get-go to me. But I personally thought the concluding Mederi arc worked overall seeing as Roberts likely knew he only had these 25 issues to wrap up everything he likely had planned. Sorry for the long response, I'm pretty passionate about this series as well 😆

I wonder if the "Nautica losing all emotional attachment to Skids" segment was meant to be her making a choice between Velocity and Skids. Nautica's own well-being was on the line when she agreed to the procedure and Velocity was clearly reluctant to let her do it -- on top of not wanting to see Nautica hurt she also doesn't want to lose her friend. Nautica was adamant about getting Skids back at any cost and almost seemed to not care how Velocity felt. But when Velocity was in danger she terminated the procedure to save her, losing Skids in doing so. Would've been cool if Skids did get resurrected, but Nautica not remembering what they had between them. On top of having Skids back we'd still get the sad™.

Yeah, it's violent cyberpunk slasher at its best and brilliant scifi with societal commentary on the ways your privacy can be invaded to the point that your thoughts and your life aren't really yours anymore and that since every outcome is assigned a different probability, exercising free will can lead to new timelines. For example, the highest probability universe had LL blow up and the crew dead, the story just focuses on one of the less likely timelines where the crew survives but Megs goes to prison and Rodimus becomes an alcoholic. It's sad? The whole premise of Transformers was based on the 70s oil crisis so it's weird that they turned such a thing into a fun children's show to begin with. Plus TFP fans usually complain that other continuities aren't dark enough.

I wish there was a site where I could read all of the G1/IDW continuity in order, from Infiltration (I think?) to... Til All Are One? Not sure which series is the last one in the continuity. I've read Robots In Disguise and Dark Cybertron, as well as much of Til All Are One and some Windblade, and then afterwards I read most of the series before Dark Cybertron, but not all leading up to Dark Cybertron, like I didn't read the last series before Dark Cybertron. Also haven't read Lost Light or More Than Meets The Eye. On my old computer I had made folders where I listed the issues I found online in order so I could read them in order, but I think once I got to the part in the Dinobots Spotlight comic, I lost track, fell out and just never picked it up again. And now I don't have those folders anymore, coz I have a new computer now, and I don't know if I can still find those series as easily online as I did back then. "easily", dunno how easy it actually was, might've been a bit hard. So instead I just accept the spoilers because I don't know if I'll be able to ever get back into reading the comic itself. And I found the end of IDW very sad, mostly because of Starscream's death in the second last issue (but was kinda perfect as Starscream's death usually marks the end of a show/series because he's a fan favorite) and then a ghost in the last issue. So much trouble and work and trying, and he just ends up dying... rhyme not intended. XD

I like both series, but I do concur that Lost Light has more problems, and more serious ones. I don't want to blame the writers for all of it though, because I have it on good authority that they were forced to drop a lot of plot lines because Hasbro pulled the plug on them. Logistically, I get why Rung was forgotten. His presence as Primus endangers the universe if anyone remembers his identity for long. But it really sucks that he had to die anyway. He was one of the most compassionate characters. Traces of him still exist in the Lunarians, but it hurts. I like Lug and Anode fine (fuck yeah trans femmes), but all your points about them were correct. They would have stood out more in a less busy story. The Lost Light crew is such a sausage fest already, so it felt like they tried to give the girls some time to themselves, but Nautica losing her memory of Skids just to have it be a plot point on Mederi was utter ass. I already thought she was boring, and then they rehashed Chromedome and Rewind's romance beats in her story, which was entirely unnecessary. It felt pretty borderline disrespectful of her to know what Skids went through, how he bravely confronted his worst memories to save his friends, and then she decides to pull an early Chromedome because she can't cope with the guilt of her suggestion leading to his demise. I barely remember a thing about her or Velocity that didn't require the chemistry of others. They're so boring to me. Lost Light's events and timeline jumping all over the place was definitely distracting too. Especially when it came to the Magnificence saving Tailgate's life. IMO the Big Bad of Lost Light was rushed and flat compared to the confrontation with the monsters that were the DJD in MTMTE. What is there left to confront when Megatron killed the scariest guys in the universe, save for Overlord who finally got his shit fucked by Springer and Verity? Not much. At least we got Cyclonus and Tailgate. If they had killed Tailgate off, I'd have nothing good to say about the story whatsoever. I did not spend all that time and investment in these two old men learning to love just to have Tailgate 'die' for what, the third time? F that.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who disliked the Anode-Lug relationship in Lost Light. Unlike the other couples in MTME, this ship didn't feel really as special or important to... well, anything other than the sake for just being there. Some of the Scavenger stories could have been removed and the main plot would have been still the same. I loathe the entire plot point regarding Nautica forgetting every feeling she had towards Skids because was it really necessary for her to forget why he was special to her so that they'd find out that Cyberutopia was just a euthanasia clinic? No. Just no. Added to that, I wish we'd seen more of Megatron's time in the Functionist Universe considering the last scene we saw him after he was stranded was getting a call from Orion Pax. A revolution being lead by these two would have been incredibly interesting and amazing if handled well.

I get where you're coming from with some of this. Anode and Lug definitely should've been a bigger part of the plot. A lot of it does just feel like random separate stories that aren't as good as the ones in mtmte. I love the downer ending that then gets subverted. It made my heart sink and then it made my heart soar. Rung didn't die. He shows up at the end. He survived. I do think that dark cybertron made Megatron's redemption seem too easy, but I think in mtmte/ll it was handled astonishingly well.

As far as Skids goes, I do want to say that Mederi probably would not have been found out, and the Scavengers would have been stuck in the G9 cell if Nautica hadn't forgotten about her friendship with Skids, so in a way it could be seen as a necessary evil

That's why a lot of people don't like it, though. Her memory being lost is used as a shitty plot device just to incorporate the Scavengers when they could've been written out of the story by that point.

Totally ABSOLUTELY AGREE on the sad for sads sake ROAR! I don’t even wanna revisit LL just so I can imagine better things and plotlines happening to our favorite characters. I like Anode and Lug and the rep they have, but they really didn’t need to be in the story :/ Another issue I have is with Megatron’s redemption arc, but that’s sorta about the whole war itself and all. I feel like (going forward) if someone wants to attempt another Megs redemption and he starts the war by fighting against oppression, they shouldn’t let him lose his sense of justice while he fights. Don’t make him so angry and bloodthirsty that he forgets why he started fighting in the first place. How COOL would it have been to see a 3 way war going on; the Autobots, Decepticons, and a faction of Decepticons who broke off to do all of the truly horrendous things Megs did in IDW, that is, the genocide, destruction of Cybertron, and death camps. He could still have interesting developments where he still feels responsible for it all; the only difference is, he *actually wouldn’t be* because his actions of fighting against the third faction (maybe led by the DJD or Overlord) and actually CARING about his people would’ve proven otherwise. He wouldn’t be a great person, but he also wouldn’t be the robot alien version of dictator-we-will-not-name-bcuz-they-dont-deserve-it. :’D That would also remove the uncomfortable (and probably unintentional but still bad) subtext of “if you fight against violence and oppression with violence you’ll just end up like your oppressors, no nuance allowed at all.” There could be Lawful Evil Decepticons 😭 Euuugh, the wasted potential!! 😖 Also that ending pfffffffft

I’m just confused about the ending since it kept switching back to Ratchet’s death and then like them entering another universe where everyone is happy to go on another adventure in another universe, but then we also see everyone disband the group and leave like what’s happening??

'Megatron so easily forgiven' He... wasn't? He wasn't forgiven? The whole point was that he was unforgiveable, and despite that, sought to atone and do some good in the universe anyways, finally, at the end, accepting that he should not be forgiven, and walking with bravery to the gallows.

I'm not sure about these. Adaptus, Rung, AND the Magnificence explained exactly why everybody forgets Rung. Adaptus hit him with a massive memory gun. A GOD-LEVEL MEMORY GUN. It was a sacrificial move, something you'd want for your God to do for you. You've also got people out here convinced that Nautica forgot Skids. She did not forget Skids. She had the emotional response removed. She remembered everything. The only flaw in that I have a problem with is Brainstorm not having anything in particular to say about it despite pleading with Chromedome not to do virtually the same thing when Rewind died. Ratchet didn't die of old age. He died of a rare disease that you'd kind of expect a DOCTOR to manage to pick up. We don't know how old he was when he met Drift before the war. He could have been four million years old at that point. Rewind's illness was also explained perfectly well, calling back to his obsession with data. So much of the writing was tightly threaded together, which is why it's so much fun to reread. The characters die because characters die in this franchise. Even for a cartoon, Transformers has always been willing to go kill everybody off. THE DEATH OF OPTIMUS PRIME IS ONE OF THE MOST TRAUMATIC EVENTS IN POP CULTURE but we still watch the movie. Transformers is at its best when it's willing to go dark. And compared to every other Transformers book at the time, Lost Light was still better AT killing most of its cast. Look at something like Walking Dead where viewers just became numb to it. Roberts managed to avoid that while still killing orders of magnitude more characters. Nightbeat died twice and only the first one upset me.

All of IDW went down hill in the LL era. It ended for me after the end of rid/mtmte. OP was just as bad as LL making Shockwave planning to take over the universe since the beginning of time and killing devastator after their redemption. Then they didn't even have the balls to kill off Victorian. Its as if they just wanted to piss off fans.
