I think the difference between this and Lego Batman is that with the Lego movie they understood the origin and seriousness of Batman - and made jokes within the universe that audiences can understand and agree with . This transformers movie is just a straight comedy and it doesn’t play to the actual origins or the characters or at the very least represent the world set up from the previous movies / shows

It's like they gathered a bunch of famous actors then were like "Oh shit we need an plot for this generic animated comedy movie" then a random guy walks in and is like "Oh man I just saw the latest Transformers movie that was so fun!" and light bulbs went off.

The problem with the "it's for kids" comments from Joe and Alex is this: show me a kid that cares at all about Orion Pax or D-16. The only reason you make an Orion Pax movie is to appeal to people who know who that is, and most of those people will be over 30, at least.

Chris Evans was Buzz Lightyear, Chris Pratt was Mario, and now Chris Hemsworth is Optimus Prime

I'm a little mixed on Transformers One's story because it's different from the lore I'm used to. From what I know, Cybertron always had a class problem (called Functionism), so that's accurate, but Optimus and Megatron's original functions were very different from "lowly worker bots." Orion Pax was a librarian and D-16 was a gladiator. Orion had to study his way to the top and gained popularity with Cybertron's higher class due to his intelligence and compassion, while D-16 had to fight his way to the top and gained a following amongst Cybertron's lower class due to his surprising intelligence and charisma. D-16 saw the corruption and inequality among Cybertron's classes and fought for change, inspiring Orion Pax in the process. From there, they became friends. They came from completely different backgrounds, but they respected each other regardless and even seemed to better one another, with Orion educating D-16, and D-16 teaching Orion how to fight. They both shared similar views on wanting a better future for Cybertron, but unfortunately it was their contrasting views that caused the unraveling of their friendship. They both wanted to become a Prime, but only one of them would be picked by the High Council. Orion offered a new age of peace and equality for Cybertron, while D-16, who at this point had taken on the name Megatron, wanted Cybertron to go back to its oldest roots, where only the strongest could survive, rise to the top, and conquer anything they wanted (even off-world). The High Council chose Orion, naming him Optimus, and Megatron, feeling betrayed, rounded up his followers and declared the never-ending Cybertronian War that spanned across the universe. That origin sounds way more interesting than what Transformers One looks like it's going to be, but I'm still cautiously optimistic because the animation is really beautiful and I actually found the humor funny. Hopefully we'll see more of this backstory in the sequels if the movie is a success.

I think everyone was looking for more War/Fall of Cybertron games High Moon Studios put out about 12 years ago. That or the first five minutes of Bumblebee.

Optimus is *coming* again, I feel so warm on the inside now.

We can hope this is one of those situations where the film is actually way more seriously composed and it's just the marketing that's pretending this film is a pure comedy to grab the casual audience.

I'd rather watch the first Bay Transformers a million times than this if the movie isn't better than the trailer 😢

5:00 In defense, Chris Hemsworth isn't voicing Optimus Prime. He's voicing Orion Pax, who's practically a different character. In an episode of Generation One, it was shown that Orion originally sounded nothing like Optimus Prime to the point that several time-traveling Autobots couldn't recognize him. To me, Chris's voice does fit. As for Brian's voice as D-16, I think it's supposed to show that Megatron used to be a normal person before he became the cruel supervillain warlord we all know and love. By the end of the movie, Brian's voice will probably become much deeper and sinister. Also, yes Joe, Transformers One is supposed to be the start of a trilogy.

I was saddened to see that it's earthspark the movie. I was waiting to see a fart joke in the trailer.

It’s got the same vibe as TMNT Mutant Mayhem, and that turned out to be a pretty good movie. It should also be noted that this is the first film in a planned trilogy. Anyone who knows even a little about Transformers lore can guess that this trilogy is going to end in tragedy. That’s why I don’t mind the comedic tone portrayed here. It’s the calm before the storm. We’ll likely see Megatron’s fall to darkness in the next movie, and the tragic fall of Cybertron in the third movie. Until then, this movie serves to introduce the main players and provide a bit of levity before things get serious.

kind of reminds me of the TMNT Animated film that dropped recently. Comedic tone doesn't have to be bad as long as the heart is there, I'm cautiously optimistic

Well the the 86 movie did the same thing hiring big name actors instead of voice actors for the new characters anyway.

Look. I get it’s a kids movie and shit. But unless I completely misunderstand- How are they on their home planet, and have cars/planes/whatever to “transform” into? Wouldn’t they have to go to earth to figure out what the hell those are? But, yes, I also understand logically approaching this means they probably wouldn’t transform into anything, which completely negates the title “Transformers” 😂

My kid is excited for it, which is most likely who it's targeted towards. I'm also interested in Megatron and Optimus Prime's relationship before they became enemies.

Remember when we first watched transformers as kids!? This is for kids guys, can’t look at it through an adult expectation eyes. It looks fun and colourful and what we’d expect for the target audience it’s for.

Since this is a pre war Transformers film, a lighter tone is kind of what I expected especially since this is before all hell breaks loose on Cybertron. The only thing I worry about however is if the comedy will get too distracting to the point of being obnoxious. Time will tell but so far I'm intrigued to see how this will go.

I didn’t realize this until I watched the Chris McFreely video on the trailer, but apparently Megatron’s original name in this film, “D-16,” is not only his original name in the Aligned Continuity as well, but also a reference to his G1 toy packaging in Japan. Where he was marketed as “Destron-16” or “D-16.”

Lego Batman is a comedy but it's more of a satire or parody this movie is going to be much more serious and dark than that but it's also a comedy for kids I have a feeling this movie is going to be really good animated movies have been going crazy these last couple years ever since spider verse of course

So we're not getting a Transformers movie in the style of the Cybertron games?

After watching this trailer, my expectations dropped significantly. When I heard we were getting an origin story set on Cybertron, I was hoping they would go the comic book route. In the IDW comics, the Transformers had a social class system. Your status was determined by your vehicle or alt mode. Megatron was a slave (because he transformed into a mining vehicle) , lost his job, and watched his friends die working in the mines. Orion Pax (who will later become Optimus Prime) was a cop and had a fairly high social status. The difference between him and the rest of the high status Transformers was that he wasn't corrupt. One days Megatron ended up in Jail cause he got into a bar fight, but Orion got him out because he felt Megatron didn't deserve to be in there. Some time passed, and Megatron got tired of the racism so he started the Cybertronian Civil War. Orion didn't like the way the upper class was treating the lower class but didn't like how Megatron was going about change. That's how they ended up at odds with each other. One my favorite line from the comics is when Megatron and Optimus sit down and talk to eachother after the war ended and Megatron says to Optimus " I don't hate you Prime, I hate what you represent" I digress. Doesn't look like we're getting this but the film could still be decent so I'll give it a chance. Fun fact: in the comics, the word Autobot was a slur for people on the high council. Auto meaning autonomous as in the rich don't think for themselves. They're all sheep who do what they are told even if its wrong. The word Decepticon was a slur for the lower class who tried to fight for freedom. Decepticon as in deception. "If speaking the truth is deception, then we are gladly guilty"-Megatron

I see this movie closer to like Transformers prime the all CGI animated show it's like that but with a lot of jokes and made for kids the story in this movie is very close to Optimus and Megatron's origins and backstory from that show

Honestly? I'm sold for this film. Its a different take on the story and is clearly meant to be a kids film, and it looks absolutely hysterical.

It for kids 😂, it's always been for kids. There are plenty of transformers books, movies, and show fot you to see instead. My kids are going to love this.

They've already come out to say the film will have its deep moments and have some high stakes. They just happened to show only the comedic bits in the trailer.

Just makes me want the cybertron games as movies. Especially since those games take place in the transformers prime continuity.

Why do they all have same body design with that center hole? They're supposed to look distinct from eachother, not like they form a matching set.

People who actually paid attention (edit: me) already noted the fact that there are a few, very serious scenes hidden in the trailer. My guess is that it’s gonna be more than meets the eye in this first trailer.

In terms of tone I’m guessing it’s gonna be like the first kung fu panda movie but I do wish in terms of an origin they made it like tfp did with Optimus and megatron

This is not for me, but that's OK. For The Transformers brand to last, it needs more than the same fans that have been following for 40 years, this is for kids, new fans to keep the brand alive another 40 years.

All they have to do is turn that first brilliant game (War For Cybertron) into a movie. THATS IT. Bumblebee was for me the most entertaining Transformers movie since the original animated and that's purely because they keep the OG designs and voice actors (as close as they could anyway)

I understand the the comedic aspect kinda turning some people off until you remember how this story will eventually end. Some fans want a grittier movie I get that but it’s hard to fully judge this movie without seeing how things fold between Orion and D-16 and how they eventually become mortal enemies.

I like the humour it hits my funny side , but if I'm going to the cinema n the 80s version is showing I'm choosing that "YOU GOT THE TOUCH"

When I was a kid in the 80s i didn't watch transformers for the comedy I loved the seriousness of the cartoon. You want comedy go watch fkin trolls or care bears. Transformers in the 80s was testosterone fuelled manliness with a hint of comedy.

The one thing thats going to get me a ticket to a theater is if they mimic the tone of the cybertron games

Oh no, the movie is gonna be terrible because it didn't measure up to your expectations? A toyline that appealed mostly to kids has a movie that is appealing to the kid audience and their families? Inconceivable!!! You really come off as very judgmental here for just a trailer and acting like you know how it will turn out before its release. Bad movies had good trailers, good movies had bad trailers. Trailers are stitched together scenes meant to hype up a movie and apparently the ones who made this trailer felt that comedy would be a good draw, doesn't mean the movie is gonna be firing off jokes every minute.

The opening scene for Bumblebee is the closest were ever gonna get to a all transformers no humans movie in live action style at this rate. im fine with this movie existing it's aimed at kids too get a new generation hooked on the plastic crack of toy lines, but the fact that the next transformers movie planned after this is a cross over with Gi joe makes my eyes roll, not that i have an issue with Gi joe, but it just means it's less and less likely ill get the transformers movie i want to see in my life time.

I'm causiously optimistic. Yes, there's way too much of a comedy vibe in the trailer, but you also see clips of more serious stuff in it. I also don't mind how Hemsworth sounds as Orion Pax. I'm more concerned with Megatron's voice tbh. But the G1 Transformers movie was the very first movie I remember seeing in a theater, and if nothing else this might be a great movie to bring my nephew's kids to go see.

It’s a kids movie they’re doing it in order to sell toys. They do not care about people over a certain age with their nostalgia trips. They’re trying to get a new generation of kids so that they can ask their parents, Can we get the toys. if you are an adult or a teenager or someone who slightly older your best bet is to stick with the comics. Or hope somebody makes a secondary streaming type animation that fits better with maturer taste.

The trailer shows absolutely nothing of the relationship between Orion and D-16 fracturing, it’s a first look trailer they’re clearly leaning more into the more marketable aspects for the general audience. Also it’s really funny to hear Alex call the original great when most remember it only for the first 26 minutes and it was the biggest cynical cash grab due to toy lines.

Why didn’t they just do the animation like in the intro to Bumblebee!?

I wont lie, I dont hate it.

The movie is about the start of a war that was so bad that the core of the planet to shut off and 80% of the population has perished and they make it a comedy...

I know the director did say they put a lot more humor in the trailer, I would have gone for more of a Starwars prequel approach of a fallout between 2 Friends, where Anakin fall to the dark side from good intentions, could Mirror Megatron fall into tyrannical leader Like in a lot of the IDW comics megatron was a simple Engergon minor that wanted to stop the Inequality of cybertron and the the lower classes to rise up against the hierarchies of Cybertron

Once again Transformers is misunderstood by filmmakers (after what they did to Prime’s character in the Bayverse I’ll never forgive them). Nobody wants this I’m sure.

Why do they hate us? This should be a gritty, serious story. And instead, its just a joke filled parody..........
