As far as I'm concerned, there's one trait about Ultra Magnus that stands out above the rest. When the Junkions brought him back in the movie, his first words weren't "I'm alive", they were "You're all alive". He cared more that the *other* Autobots had survived than anything else. If you don't have that as the basis for your characterization, then you're doing Ultra Magnus wrong.

So we’re not going to appreciate the fact that his death episode in _The Headmasters_ was just called _Ultra Magnus Dies_ ?

Its a good thing that Ultra-Magnus appeared in Transformers Prime. And voiced by Michael Ironside no less. But its good to know that Magnus is still receiving love and attention even decades after his official debut.

Magnus didn't do much in Transformers: The Movie and became the butt of many jokes, but, DAMN he had a great name, mad presence, and looked cool as hell! He immediately became my favorite Transformer. Thanks for this sweet video!

You know. Rodimus Prime needed the matrix inside him to be great, but Ultra Magnus had an OPTIMUS PRIME inside him all along..... no wonder why the matrix got confused.

With a name like *Ultra Magnus* how can you not be a badass? Every version of Magnus has been pretty badass. It's like an unwritten rule. Going to include Magnus? Make him badass.

As someone who grew up on the 86 movie and the RID cartoon, I've always liked the depiction of Ultra Magnus as Optimus Prime's brother.

One thing you didn't mention but Sentinel Prime in the DOTM movie was originally going to be Ultra Magnus, but Hasbro didn't want Ultra Magnus's name sullied by being a traitor.

I like it when characters have trademark weapons. I think the hammer gimmick with Ultra Magnus fits very nicely.

Even though the white Optimus is lazy, i really like the concept of Prime and Magnus being twins.

I've got to say, Ultra Magnus has always been a favorite of mine, for a lot of the reasons people seem to hate him. The Magnus armor had a major appeal to me, especially when we found out he had the same body as Optimus. Prime had always been a big, tough bot, so adding the armor to him shows just how powerful Magnus himself was. i will admit though, that i've always preferred him being just old friends with Prime, rather than true brothers.

Funny fact: Overload's name in the original Japanese dialogue for Transformers Armada (called Legend of the Microns over there) was indeed Ultra Magnus. In fact, during one of Optimus Prime's power link sequences with the character in the English dub, Optimus can be heard saying Ultra Magnus instead of Overload.

I personally like the idea of Ultra Magnus having a white Optimus inside him. To me, the idea could be used as something for comedy. Like if his armor was in need of repair and he had to remove it so it could be fixed while being constantly mistaken for Optimus due to his inner robot.

Ultra Magnus is my favorite Autobot. Just the fact of him being the second in command as well as Optimus’ brother at arms is how I like him the most

Next Ultra Magnus should be a strict brother of Optimus Prime, sharing a similar frame but after nearly losing his brother in an ambush, he donned the Magnus Armor and began to isolate himself from the rest of his crew, putting him on edge with the others, especially Prime who abandoned his Orion Pax identity after being saved by Alpha Trion.

Excellent vid. I'm not usually a fan of uber straight-laced by the book characters, but Magnus is a favorite of mine.

I really like the idea for characters like Magnus: strong, smart, capable leaders, but they have something about them that prevents them from being "the chosen one." In Magnus' case probably being his officious, no-nonsense attitude. Dude's a really good guy, just not quite "worthy," which makes the universe he's in feel bigger and more diverse as a result.

I was introduced to the character through Animated. So I’ve always seen him as a superior commanding officer. But given he and Optimus are commonly put in positions of leadership, I like the idea of them being brothers.

The original toy being hidden inside a bigger body suddenly makes the Lost Light continuity Magnus make more sense.

I always liked the Ultra Mammoth version. It's a shame we never got more G1 characters upgraded to Beast Wars Maximals and Predacons. It would have made for a great BotCon set and probably could have been a fresh take on the original story of BW where it was actually the same characters from G1 with new animal forms. How awesome would it have been to take the Transmetal Waspinator mold, give it a new head, and repaint it as Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp? Or what if they recolored the Tripredacus members as the Insecticons? Although, yes, a crawfish is not an insect. Or if the Magnaboss members were recolored like their G1 selves? It would make for an interesting, more unified color scheme. Although I imagine Ironhide's color scheme would essentially be inverted. With his elephant parts being red and his robot parts being grey. That would make for a disturbing alt mode. A blood red elephant.

I feel Magnus missed his change to be a prime simply because he didn't realize you have to open the matrix with the finger slots

This is one of those funny cases where I kinda wish this had been made later. Obviously McFeely knows this, but for those who don't, Magnus was featured heavily in the show Siege. The toy was entirely original, not a recolour. It homaged G1 in its robot, but RID 2001 in its vehicle. Better yet though, Magnus' toy got retooled into an Optimus Prime! Yes, for once, a complete reversal of tradition -- and a rare Unicron Trilogy homage to boot since it has Galaxy Force's super mode!

I actually grew up with Animated and original Ultra Magnus, so I didn't know too much about his G1 counterpart. I still like Animated UM's design and RID's attitude.

I remember reading somewhere, I think in a video a few years ago, that at one point, for the sixth Transformers movie, Liam Neeson was gonna voice Ultra Magnus.

Great video! I'd never heard the Dion theory, and after looking it up on the wiki, it'd be really cool to see a new incarnation of Ultra Magnus (or Ironhide, I guess) incorporate that sort of lore. Maybe in conjunction with "Ultra Magnus" being a suit of armor identity that Dion takes on after his "death."

I remember the US commercial for Ultra Magnus. "When Ultra Magnus rolls into action he takes on Decepticons...like no one else can". This immediately made him my favorite Autobot. Doesn't mean much in comics after you've come of age, but UM's intro when I was young made me automatically treat him as leader when I played with my toys...this is after OP's death of course (the original OP). I never took to Rodimus Prime, so when I played with my toys, Ultra Magnus was always the new leader, not Hot Rod.

Excellent, well done! My favorite UM will always be the G1 version. I always love the idea of the white Magnus robot cab wearing an armor like the G1 toy and Dreamwave version. He was the 1st TF of his time (US s1 to s4) to have a smaller robot wearing an armor. It's such as ashamed other media doesn't explore this concept more often.

I love the aligned continuity, TF Prime Magnus is favourite, wish he appeared in RID .

I always loved Ultra Magnus welding a hammer I was bummed that Predaking snapped the Forge of Solus Prime in half but the claw hand was pretty cool

I kinda like Magnus depicted as a white Optimus Prime in armor the idea has always fascinated me and I thought it was kinda brilliant. Two brothers and one fell into the shadow of his brother and wanted to be his own not so doned a set of kickass armor

One thing that should be mentioned about Aligned Magnus is that, as far as I can recall, he's one of the very few Cybertronian characters who's received a prosthetic replacement limb after suffering a grave injury, with said limb being a new right hand cobbled together from scrap metal and spare parts by Ratchet after Magnus had an unfortunate encounter with Predaking after the Autobots destroyed Shockwave's lab where an army of Predacons were being cloned. Predaking also broke the Forge of Solus Prime in the same battle, though it was never revealed how the hammer was repaired off-screen between the events of Prime Season 3 and the RiD 2015 Comics.

I whole heartedly agree! Ultra Magnus IS NOT a white Optimus Prime!!! That is one of the worst things Dreamwave comics did. You know, besides not paying their writers and artists and swanning off to Hong Kong with all the money, that is.

You mentioned Energon Magnus was a recolour of the Armada Overload... well, Overload was acually named Ultra Magnus in the Japanese version! So that incarnation was not really a lame recolor of another character LOL

My favorite transformer has always been Optimus prime and my little brothers favorite is Ultra magnus so we tend to like the brother angle

When I first saw the movie I thought he and hot rod would become a pretty serious rivalry, I always thought that is a story they could explore

Ultra Magnus has always been my favorite autobot

The first appearance of Ultra Magnus for me was Transformers Prime which at first I really didn't like at all because of his strict commander ways that they used back on Cybertron but grew to really liking him towards the end of the series. My favorite version of him is probably from G1 but I prefer him to be voiced by Robert Stack because he had a kind, gentle voice like we get from Peter Cullen for Optimus Prime. I do really like the idea of Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime being brothers!

I love the white Optimus Prime version and how DW comics actually used it. I'm hoping that they have him like that in the new comic as Optimus' brother again.

I really prefer Ultra Magnus to Rodimus as Optimus Prime's succesor.

I like the version of magnus that appeared in siege: a grim war veteran tired of his planet’s never-ending war. I also liked the idea of the alpha trion protocols and magnus having them, while prime has the matrix.

Ultra Magnus has always been one of my favorites. I've always loved the "iteration" aspect at play with Optimus Prime and wish they would have done more with that and include Dark Convoy/Nemesis Prime/Scourge as well.

The UK Marvel iteration of Transformers, is still THE best version of the whole thing. Particularly the stories written by Simon Furman and drawn by Geoff Senior.

While I agree Recolouring Optimus prime into Magnus colours is a bit lazy I do still like the idea of Optimus and Magnus being Brothers, it gives them a better character dynamic and sort of explains how the two characters are so close. I also love the concept of Magnus leading the war effort on Cybertron in Primes Absence. Ultra Magnus is just an awesome character and I love him so much. Xx

Ultra Magnus in Transformers Prime held his own against Predaking, Shockwave, and even Megatron before Megatron ultimately got the upper hand. That version of Ultra Magnus is my version of Ultra Magnus.
