Our long time family G-Wagen was a bit slow after 31 years, so we put a mercedes w126 m117 5 litre V8 into it. There is hardly any info i could readily find on how to do this, so i put this one together to show how we did it. Im now very happy with the vehicle which sounds great, is far more useful in the city and has no issues with sand (the only previous weakness of our heavy G) at all. Economy? Son't ask...

excellent work! We have the same problem/modification on our 1983/4 LWB W460 300GD. It has the older circular engine mountings. We needed custom mountings to fit the 1990's OM603 engine.

a 1990s 463, cant you buy the mounts from the dealer Yang? It really is a lot of work with all this stuff. driveshaft length. tachometer calibration, worry about driveshaft mount angles! it goes on. good luck mate

@@w116036 We are not going that modern! The engine and autogearbox come from a 300D Mercedes W24 E-class of 1990s vintage. not completed yet!

@@Tareqprince careful guys, if yours is a mint original one and the engine is fine, id stay as is. if you only occasionally drive it and have money to throw away, go for it. there is a bit of work to get it done nicely. its a lot easier to drive around town at low km's, but I would feel safer driving the 280ge driving across the country at 100km as the V8 rev;'s pretty high for a v8 on long runs.

Hi there, great job, really impressed by your work, craftmaship and commitment to get this job done without any "instructions" from others what so ever. Also a great compilation of the work for others to see, if anyone should have enough balls to try somethin similar :) I noticed a detail on your car, that you have the original old style V8 badges on the side, which originally came only on the 500GE. I have a 500GE myself, but some previous owner removed the original V8 badges from the side to add some newer style, and now I can't find the original badges with the underlinig of V8 anywhere, not even in Mercedes EPC for my car. How and where did you find these?? :p

Hi, im pretty amazed about your idea of putting a 5.0l v8 engine , a couple of years ago i had my g-wagon (w460) with a 240 engine and i did the same thing but with a 300td with the 240 transmission. But right now after watching this video i would like to do the same thing of installing a v8. Was there any major modification ? regards the steering mechanism and transmission to transfercase? So... great job! but i had one question, you've got a 500 engine + transmission mounted but did you changed anything about the shafts or anything? because of the torque etc.

+Geoffrey de Grand . not originally Geoff. after 10000km on the 500, it started to get some reasonable vibrations in the transfer case selector and a vibration at speed. we have had the car for 30 years and its probably done 400000km (we reset the odo when changed the 300GD to the 280GE, and again when we rebuilt the 280 m110 in early 2000s). it could have been wear and tear with age, it could have been brought on by the greater power but i dont think so. i changed the transfer case mounts and it didn't help. the driveline guys thought the shafts weren't right so i had a new rear and intermediate shaft made. just balanced the front shaft. when we originally fit it, i think you only had to cut the intermediate shaft from gearbox to transfer case. make sure you line the two ends up as they were though!..

I love it! This is pretty much how I’d want my 460! Did you consider the side exit sport exhaust from a G500 or G63? I’m sure a used set be could be cut up to fit.

Cheers Holson, if you have the side pipes I would probably get done by the cops. also as I took the sidesteps off I wouldn't want my kids getting burnt climbing in!

amos mos ha. sorry mate. sold that to a guy with a 123 I think. it was ahigh compression engine my mechanic rebuilt so in great shape.

Hello, building an m117 in my 280 GE short version at the moment, your vid is helping and inspiring!! The exhaust headers don't fit in how did you solve this?? Could you make a movie or some pictures on that part as it is a little short in this one!

Hi mate, ill see if I can get around to it. The headers/exhaust manifolds were custom made. The standard ones from the m117 sedan do not fit, whether they are the 'logs' or 'tri y', you will need to get some made! best of luck paul

Any update, curious as well, can’t clear the front prop shaft. Going to have my muffler guy see if he can goof some bends in.

@@mylessterrettmine is finished and road legal since march 2021! Exhaust is the log type since i made IT myself and didn't want to overcomplecate things. Routing is under the body beside the body mount.....

yeah mate. in the most isolated capital city in the world! there were only about 150 w460s sold here in the 80s, and many of them have now rusted out! thanks for words

Gunbilig Disan hey were 32s. small amount of rubbing in full lock reverse only. I didn't want to cut any of the G which I think you need to do with 33s.

they were from the German off road c company ORC. they were not cheap!

Hans Verkoeijen sorry re delay Hans, I think they were ORC from memory and they cost about 600 euro at the time! that was without postage to Australia!

no friend, it would be ideal but it creates a lot of issues I believe. first, you would need to change both axles so they run in unison. second, id have to confirm the right choice - I think 280ge'ss would have better freeway ratios than our 300gd had and they were never sold in australia

The VG80 can handle all that torque???

Drew Suppa not sure about this mate. it now has a bit of driveline rattle so ive had the driveshafts realigned. I don't generally do too many burnouts so I think it should be fine. I though he VG80 meant it could handle 800Nm as in low range these Gs really ratchet up the torque?
