Transforming Storage Shelf / Workbench - Small Space Organization

Have storage issues? Let's fix that! This heavy-duty mobile transforming shelf can hold sixteen 18Q storage boxes, your larger "awkward" tools, or can be moved to where you need it and be used as a workbench/table! And the best part... as a shelf, it only takes up 2' x 3' of space.
I originally built this as a mobile workstation for your heaviest tools... but then realized that it can be used for so much more!
*IMPORTANT: All building material has different weight limits. Make sure to test your shelves and structure before loading it.
Check all lock nuts after each use to make sure none have loosened.
Place the heaviest item on the second shelf from the bottom and lighter items on the top two shelves to keep it from tipping.
The moving parts can cause injury to fingers and arms if not used correctly. Do not stand or climb on shelves.*

I am so blown away right now. My husband is an above the knee amputee, and our biggest problem has been figuring out a way to line up all equipment without taking up the entire floor space. This is the solution. He will be able to work and move equipment without any stress to his body or help from anyone. This is amazing. Thank you!!

Exactly Matthew I tell someone people don’t understand how life changes when one loses normal things I do often took for granted without even realizing I was until the day I woke up could t move 16 yrs later I’m somewhat mobile with orthopedic equipment

Excuse my black humour (I'm a Dr)... When I read this the phrasing first made me imagine your husband being 2 separate lower legs - the rest being amputated :P. As an injured retiree myself I appreciate the frustration of imposed limitations that your husband didn't have ... and then did. I hope he and you can build this and he can enjoy doing a hobby without having to be working around his amputation.

My only negative is that if you fully load each shelf, you don't have a table when you lower it down. You still have neatly organized equipment that's easy to reach for shorter people like me! You can move everything off the shelves, use the table, and put it all back on, but I'm mentally problem solving a locking lazy susan style rotating shelf and stackable table/shelf so you can just leave everything on its shelf and move the table to whichever one you're using. Definitely a new subscriber. I've seen a few I really liked, but this one bumped it over. Thanks for sharing this!

Good idea, position each piece so a separate rolling table could be connected to the side next to which ever tool is needed to prevent having to move other tools. That was first thing I seen

If you had buckets or drawers held under the flat surfaces, it would work for both storage and a workspace. But removing items when the table is flat would be difficult.

@dhiltonp drawers under the top and bottom shelf possibly? Pull them out from the ends when it's a table? Only they would have to be shallow right? Or an angled drop down shelf with push release for the 2nd shelf from the top?

I've been semi-quietly following you for a while now. When i first found your channel, I was hooked. Story time: I've always had this weird fascination with wood working and I never knew why. Even when I was a little girl, wood working just intrigued me. I would sneak into my dad's garage, grab some scrap wood, a box of nails and hammer and just go to town all by my lonesome lolol. I remember trying to teach myself to use a hand saw, too (as a parent, this scares me to think about 😬). I was probably around 8 at the time (same age as my child is now!). Many years later, I found out my maternal grandfather actually had a woodworking shop in our little hamlet! I remember seeing the little vacant building as a kid, thinking it was so cool and wondering what it once was. Soon after, it was demolished. My grandfather retired from woodworking and became a substitute bus driver for our school district. He later had a stroke and had to retire from driving. A few years after that, his dementia kicked in and about a year after that, he passed away. I had a few items that were made by him but I lost them in a fire. Now, I have nothing left and it breaks my heart. I'll be 35 soon and am still working on building up my tool collection. I have most of the handheld power tools I wanted and am working on the larger items now, like a table saw and a planer. Not a super exciting story but it means a lot to me to know that there was a reason behind my woodworking fascination for all those years as a little girl who'd rather be in the garage or outside and not inside playing house. Anyway, the reason for sharing this is that your channel brings back those memories and gets me excited to try to tackle some "real" woodworking projects 🤗 So, thank you! 😊

I just found your channel; your narration is as smooth as silk. This is something I may be able to use. For years I'd wondered how the sawblade could have nipped off the end of my finger behind the fence while my hand held a board against the miter fence. Years later, while cutting a miter on a piece of casing, the cutoff hit the blade and embedded itself into the wall behind the saw. The noise immediately made me realize it wasn't the sawblade at all. Keep your finger well away from the travel of those flying pieces, and perhaps you'll avoid a trip to the ER.

This is very cool. I might take apart a rolling storage bench I have and replace it with two of these. It will take a bit of thought. My shop is my garage and at certain times of year. Two vehicles need to be able to quickly be parked inside in case of hail. When needing perfectly straight lumber. Buy 2x8s Build a table saw guide and cut it down to size. 2x4s and 2x6s these days are cut from the smallest trees as evidenced by the rough edges found on both sides. Cut the 2x8 down from each side to the center. This will give the newly created 2x4 the most strength. Depending on the size of the offcuts they can be used as 1x2 or 2x2 material.

I made it to 1:06 before I paused and ordered the plans - as an M.E. I could have figured this out fairly quickly, but someone this creative deserves to be paid. I had already purchased lumber to build a “tower” for my “portable” bench tools (planer, table saw, miter saw, Foreman) and just yesterday was in the shop pondering the best way to build it. But this is so much better!

As a plumbing instructor and someone who can work with his hands (mediocre wood worker) I actually need this. Since my lab space has been reduced (lack of interest from high schoolers... sad) this right here is not only perfect for storage but also instructional purposes. Such a great idea. Awesome build! I wanted to comment on your channel. It is very watchable. You speak in a clear, calm voice, no yelling. You fast forward through the repetitious parts and having funny parts, you don't try to turn it into a comedy channel. Brilliant! Just one thing I should add, is, if you can put the struts in the other way up, so the seal stays lubricated and they hold their gas ‘charge’ longer. Just a tip I pick up from a dude who recharges gas struts for living.

Fantastic idea and build video. Only suggestion I would make/change is to countersink the screws holding the tops on using flat top screws, so that you have a perfectly flat working surface.

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking As a suggestion, you might want to consider adding locking, caster wheels to the two legs that fold down, which would make your storage shelf into more of a mobile cart when the wheels were in the unlocked position.

This is crazy smart. The cantilevered design, plus the gas hinges make it super easy to lift up and down. I'm pretty short, so storing things up high requires running up and down a ladder, but I think I'm going to adapt this to have upper cabinets on top that I can fold down to reach. Another home run Mr. Peech!

This video should do good for a long time. I was up at 5:30am and usually on Sunday mornings when I wake up there’s a video already. I watched the 3 picket planter video while waiting for this one and this was well worth the wait. Now I have to decide if I’m still going to make 2 flip tables or this and just 1 flip table, and there is a chance I won’t be needing a flip table at all. Good stuff 👍🏼.

Hey, I built this over the weekend. Overall blown away by the idea. The only thing I did differently was to add some reinforcements to the side pieces. They have to take the full weight of the shelves and cope with lateral forces as the shelf transforms as well. I screwed some iron bar across the sides and now it's solid. Awesome build, awesome video.

Great design, Matthew! Have you considered, for the swing-out support legs: attach them to the outboard side of the vertical legs for the top shelf, with a spacer to clear the main arms. That way, the support legs will already be in the upright position without needing to rely on gravity or manually ensuring that they are deployed.

Nice! I've thought of doing something similar as a wall mounted fold down, but I like the idea of being able to roll it around, and convert to a table, even better. The one thing I would change, at least for those that are equipped to batch out identical parts, would be making each of the L parts out of 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood laminated together.

Oh I would love this for my kitchen. That heavy mixer is horrible. Love the wheels so can move it. Now all I need is somebody to make it for me and maybe make a better kitchen so it is usable for this old crippled lady. When I get to heaven I am gonna be looking for someone to teach me all this stuff. St Joseph set me up with some appointments please. Woodworking has always been my dream to do.

A) This is awesome. B) See above. C) If you only wanted to make one of these and had shelving in your shop / pallet rack layout.... you could make these hit the heights of your shelves so you could flip this up and slid them off onto their shelf and roll over to get the next set of tools. D) If you used them as indicated in C, I'd call them "The Peech Reach"

Awestruck. (My dad had a one word admonition for us when we practiced any of the skills he taught us. "Gravity" This applied to shooting, loading the truck, planning a trip, filling a backpack - literally everything. Then, as we got older and began making life altering decisions, the advice remained the same. Sometimes I would ask him to explain how it applied, and he said that everything rocks back to center. Even if a jerk is doing pretty well just now - expect some flair-ups of jerk behavior when he is operating from center - this saved my job more than once.)

I would recommend using double 3/4 inch or triple 1/2 inch plywood glued together for the arms is would a lot stronger. Even make a ¼ inch plywood gusset screwed to the arms on both sides. Nevertheless this is a great idea. Also I could see a folding tables attached to the sides with hinges for additional top space to allow extended out feed and/or in feed tables the table could be use together or individually. And in the storage position make like door and provide protection to the sides. I know thus will add weight ot foldable frames so you can drop in tops. Or mount removeable in and out out feeds the table using some kind of L hooks/bracket that goes into [ looking loop screw to the frame to receive the L hook for quick removal. That self then could be storage on the sides with fold up legs with levelers on the bottom of the legs. To drill the holes in the arm make a jig so holes will be straight and the same to prevent racking on the main pivot points use bearings for easy lift and drop the table onto place. A pvc tube or copper pipe who's inside diameter near the same size as the bolts used at the pivot points reducing the wear and tear on the wooded holes that the bolts go through the wood.

Thank you for a solution to small spaces. I enjoyed building this storage shelf/workbench this weekend. I had to "modify" your design so that it would fit through a standard doorway. By cutting the sides to 67", it is 78" tall when upright. I didn't want to lose the length of the workbench, so I put the last plywood shelf on hinges. Your instructions in this video were great. Thanks again for the good content.
