Nano-emulsification of water in mineral oil has been carried out using a bench-scale ultrasonic liquid processor, BSP-1200, manufactured by Industrial Sonomechanics, LLC. A common converging ultrasonic horn (tip diameter 15.6 mm) was used in the first part of the video, producing 40 ml of the nano-emulsion. A Full-wave Barbell horn (tip diameter 35 mm) was used in the second part of the video, allowing to scale up the volume of the formulation by a factor of 5, thereby producing 200 ml of the nano-emulsion in the same amount of time. The ultrasonic amplitude delivered by both horns was 65 microns. More information is available at www.sonomechanics.com

@bobbledill Yes, with our equipment you can make permanently stable oil-in-water emulsion. Which tween to use depends on the oil type. A little Span also helps if you want to make translucent nanoemulsions.

Forgive this question if it seems obvious, but would you achieve the same result at a lower amplitude with greater time (assuming the bar's surface area remains constant)? I ask out of curiosity. Thank you!
@IndustrialSonomechanics
@IndustrialSonomechanics 7 жыл бұрын
No, it is the amplitude (directly related to the intensity of cavitation-induced shear forces) that defines the final droplet size you are going to achieve given sufficient time. Additional processing time does not result in further droplet size reduction if the amplitude remains the same.
@Earthbound64
@Earthbound64 5 жыл бұрын
@@IndustrialSonomechanics The higher the amplitude the smaller the dropplet size. Does that mean the smaller the HORN (tip) the better for smaller dropplet size or is the size of the horn not important?
@alexeypeshkovsky1614
@alexeypeshkovsky1614 5 жыл бұрын
@@Earthbound64 Barbell horns can generate very high ultrasonic amplitudes even when their tip diameters are large. Therefore, when a Barbell horn is used, the tip diameter does not matter in terms of the resulting droplet size. See this for further information: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f6eTYMqd3LSlpKM.html

@@alexeypeshkovsky1614 In the given video ,it says that the bigger horn has 100mykro metres of amplitude. But isnt a lower amplitude better for generating smaller droplets? I am now confused. In the given video it says that with the bigger horn you get bigger amplitude. Excuse my confusion!
@alexeypeshkovsky1614
@alexeypeshkovsky1614 5 жыл бұрын
@@Earthbound64 Higher ultrasonic amplitudes are better for making smaller nanoemulsion droplets. This is because at higher amplitudes, the intensity of cavitation and the associated shear forces are greater. The size of a Barbell horn is not correlated to the maximum amplitude it can provide - they are independent variables. For further information, please see this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f6eTYMqd3LSlpKM.html

Can you achieve nano emulsification with a stator rotor homogenizer with small stator holes? Also if you dont mind me asking. What is the main difference when emulsifying ans creating nano emulsification vs micron emulsification? Will one last long without separating? Like say nano stays together for 2 years vs micron only staying together and separating after 1 year?
@IndustrialSonomechanics
@IndustrialSonomechanics 4 жыл бұрын
We do not have experience with stator rotor homogenizers for the production of nanoemulsions, unfortunately. Nano-emulsification, however, is one of the most common applications of our ultrasonic equipment (aka. soncators). For the difference between nano-emulsification and micro-emulsification, please see the following blog article: blog.sonomechanics.com/blog/water-soluble-cannabis-oil-microemulsion-liposomes-or-nanoemulsion. Correctly prepared nanoemulsions remain stable indefinitely.

Is this the same process to obtain solid lipid nanoparticles? Should it also be translucid?
@alexeypeshkovsky1614
@alexeypeshkovsky1614 3 жыл бұрын
It's a similar process, the main difference would be the formulation components. The result will be translucent if all particles are smaller than about 100 nm, which is what's typically desired.

I saw another video and I tried myself where 50% was vegetable oil and 50% water without tensides, the final product was just milky and not translucent. (Our experiment was 30 minutes at max amplitude) (Amplitude from max to MIN was 84microns in my experiment with a 14mm sonotrode) How comes you had a better emulsification result with even a way higher oil percentage + lower amplitude and a bigger sonotrode? I would love to receive a reply, thanks in advance and best regards!

This is a water-in-oil emulsion, not oil-in-water. The dispersed phase (water) concentration is much less than 50%.
@Earthbound64
@Earthbound64 5 жыл бұрын
@@alexeypeshkovsky1614 Shouldnt the emulsion with a higher oil concentration be less translucent than an emulsion where you just have few oil concentration? In my experiment with 5-7% oil concentration and 95% water I did not achieve any translucent emulsion although my settings had a better environment (higher micron amplitude, less volume, same diameter of sonotrode) Could you please clarify your answer regarding the O/W and W/O emulsion?
@alexeypeshkovsky1614
@alexeypeshkovsky1614 5 жыл бұрын
Generally, the median droplet size in a nanoemulsion is smaller and its stability is greater when the dispersed phase concentration is diminished. For an O/W nanoemulsion, that's the concentration of the oil phase, for a W/O, the aqueous phase. In this experiment, it's the latter. Additionally, an optimized surfactant mixture is always required for translucency.

isn't nano scale emulsions supposed to be transparent ???
@alexeypeshkovsky1614

+alok johnson No. Most nanoemulsions are milky white. When their droplets are smaller than 100 nm in dameter, however, they become translucent. Nanoemulsions with droplet sizes below about 30 nm are near-transparent.
