Just wanted to comment on something you said in another video about people making comments about your boy doing camera work. Personally I think he does a good job and I think the time you are spending with him is priceless. I wish I would have had that when I was his age but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. So I was self taught early on and formally trained later. I have over 40 years doing automotive, plant maintenance and aircraft. But I can assure you that I have taught my boy just as you are doing with yours and that is what really matters at the end of the day. It’s all about giving your kids the opportunity to be better then we ever were.

HAHAHA! You sounded just like me today (and every day, if I'm honest, lol) - I was trying to extract an oil pump from a '02 VW Passat 1.8T - saw the chain tensioner and assumed if I removed tension from the chain, I could just walk it off the sprocket. NOPE! Not happening! I lit up the shop with a fury of expletives, lol (they're probably still speeding through space, smashing asteroids along the way), and it still didn't come off! KZfaq to the rescue - turns out there was a bolt hiding in the bronze/black stained sprocket. It looked press-fit to me! Guess I should've slowed down and looked at the new one, LOL. After I removed the sprocket, piece o' cake ... of course after I got the D-shaped shaft to line up with the D-shaped hole in the sprocket. The life of a tech! 😁😉 I need to figure out how to edit my vids like that - I haven't found the "beep" sound effect yet. Could just be my crappy editing software (the free stuff that comes with the iMac). I've had to dump whole segments because of my potty mouth, lol. Gotta love rodents! My cats do, too, lol! Got 2 little ones now (8 mos. old) that absolutely destroy or eat anything that moves, HAHAHA! They're a barrel of fun. They were just walking on the rafters in my TV room as I watched your vid, knocking over all my classic beer cans ... and now they're both crashed out cold on the floor, lol. We had 5 for a while, but we're down to 4 again, after the 16 (or older - we don't know for sure) year old passed in February. She held on 2.5 years longer than expected, so that was a blessing. Great stuff as always, Paul! Hey, are you going to Super Saturday in October? I'm fairly certain I can make it to that one - would love to finally meet you in person. It's on my wife's birthday, but she'll be working. I'll just have to be super sweet when I get home. 😁 Anyway, you and your family have yourselves a HAPPY EASTER. May God bless & protect all of you. Hope your mom is hanging in there alright - we're all praying for her.

Paul, you need to get a Klein Tools 1000 Multi-Purpose 6-in-1 stripper - Crimping tool. Been using the #1000 for 45 years, can't go wrong with Klein tools. The crimper will not cut into the butt splice insulation and it is much easier to get the wire and connector into the front end of the tool.

I'm tired of those connectors. I don't trust them unless I crimp hard enough to damage the heat shrink and I end up putting liquid tape over them. Soldering older wires can be a pita too. I'm going back to uninsulated crimp connectors and a good heat shrink over them. It makes a smaller, cleaner joint too. If you don't have the heat shrink with sealer, you could coat the joint with something before sliding the tube over it. Back when there was more space to get up there, cats used to climb up to sleep on warm engines. They caused a different kind of damage when they were pulled through the belts and pulleys if they were too close when the engine was started.

Solder splicing wires is still a better quality repair (if there is enough wire length to slide down a piece of adhesive lined heat shrink tubing). Crimping can damage the wire(s) as you show.
@fredflintstone8048
@fredflintstone8048 5 жыл бұрын
... also the quality of the soldered joint is a large factor.. a cold solder joint is far worse than a crimp connection. It's true that too much pressure in the crimp connection can damage the wire. It's about having the right feel. Personally I'm not a big fan of those solder butt splices that have the ring of solder that you heat from the outside of the tube with a small flame, or other heat source. I prefer to flow the solder into the joint myself where I can control it, and see it better. getting the proper amount of flux into the joint is critical.
