Transmission "Fix", Making My Minneapolis Moline Mobilift More Mobile!

The last time I tried to use this forklift, I lost all drive in both forward and reverse. Since this is a MY60 Mobilift made by Minneapolis Moline (before the manufacturing of these units was taken over by White), its pretty old. The parts for these things are expen$ive! This forklift is in pretty bad shape overall, so its not worth putting much time or money into it. I'm going to try to get it moving again, the easiest and cheapest way possible.

Torx bits are good for those rounded allen plugs, their points match the corners of the hexagon so they are quite easy to hammer in without grinding them before.

As nasty as that filter looked, I’d be suspicious that there wasn’t gunk someplace else in the system that was keeping the oil from flowing properly. If there’s someway you can blow out all the old stuff and get some nice clean fresh stuff in it your problem could be solved. I think you’re jumping to a conclusion thinking that the pump is bad knowing how bad that fluid looked.

In talking to the previous owner afterward, I found out some history on the unit. Apparently for several previous owners and many years its had trouble moving, and all the operators just held it to the floor to get the job done.
@deezelfairy
@deezelfairy Жыл бұрын
All that 'gunk' is the clutch packs. There isn't that much material to start with. I'm a forklift tech and if I pull a filter screen out and it looks like that, that's all I need to know, she's done. Small tip that can buy you some time if you drives sluggish, the oils black DO NOT REPLACE THE FLUID - fresh fluid always makes it worse not better, change the filters but put the old fluid back in. Otherwise it's rebuild the transmission time.

True to the Low Buck Garage theme!!! If it ain't broke, don't fix it... Way too often people fix things by loading up the parts cannon, and pour money on it like it is a free condiment at the salad bar...

I really enjoy your channel as I tend to be the same with keeping it cheap and cheerful, not to be dangerous or a scrooge but not spending money I don’t have to. One of the automatic transmission additives may help with the pump and get you some more life out of it. It might be worth noting that on a machine that old the clutches are likely to be asbestos so blowing the particles in your face may not be a good thing to do. I had an old 4 cylinder Clarke forklift and we called it “Donk A Donk” because it only fired on 3 cylinders so that was the sound it made. I changed the head gasket but it turned out to be a bad valve which I didn’t check as it’s was a side valve so I just left it because, like you, it still did what I needed it to. Americans make me laugh when you call threads metric and standard because it’s metric and imperial, as in British imperial. You kicked the British out centuries ago yet you cling on to their archaic system of weights and measures. Even the Brits went metric but that’s ok because we still have the monarch and the Union Jack in our flag. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

If you have a stuck Allen socket screw that you need to get out, use a Torx driver to get it out. Use whatever Torx driver fits the tightest. This works so well that I never use the Allen head driver in any socket head screws anymore, I only use a Torx driver in those screws whether they are stuck or not. Stuck Allen head drivers almost always round out the fasteners, but the Torx drivers never do if they fit even somewhat tightly.

Little bit of maintanence saves alot of time and money. Personally i would have replaced the oilfilter and taken the pressure reducer cylinder/brake line open and made sure it moves as it should. Yeahyeah looking at the lack of lubricant where it needs to be, and excess where it doesnt, i see that youre the type that has more important stuff to do. But thats all the more reason to use bit of time now to make everything work as it should, rather than using tenfold the time and resources diagnosing and botching a dodgy "fix", that may itself become more severe problem later on.

It would be worth trying to set your main pump pressure .The pump can only build pressure to what your relief is set at, if the relief is off, which does happen, either through wear or junk getting into them, even a new pump won't be able to build pressure

Blue jeans are a decent poor boy 20micron filter, when I am working on old junk like that, I will catch all the hydraulic fluid, pour it through a couple layers of blue jeans, I like the lower legs, I seem to wear my jeans out in the knees and the pockets first, so the lower legs are practically new. Then I'll reuse the fluid if there's not a compelling reason not to. Is it the best method, no, is filtering the fluid to 20micron way better than just leaving it and hoping everything is okay? Sure it is! Lol.

That transmissions done unfortunately. I'm a forklift tech, and if we have a sluggish drive fault and the filter screen looks like that it's the end of the diagnosis. All that 'gunk' is the clutch packs. If the thing kind of drives and you don't want to rebuild it - DO NOT CHANGE THE FLUID! It always makes it worse, not better.

22:27 YEEET 🤣😂 But hey, if it works, it works. Way I see it, if you've got to split the trans from the engine to get at that pump anyway, you might as well have the whole trans gone through while it's off. Since it will still get the job done it is asked to do, no sense fuckin' with it. Save the pump replacement for when the trans totally fails. Call me wierd, but to me, that thing has earned a new transmission anyway, so if it were my machine I'd start squirreling away money, parts, preparing to do a trans in it while it still runs.
