A few weeks back we were lucky enough to attend the Arcimoto FUV and friends event in Portland, Oregon, where we got to see some unusual and interesting FUVs, rode the production Arcimoto Roadster for the first time, and got to chat with friends new and old about the Oregon three-wheel EV company that's breaking all the rules.
Today, we're sharing an interview with the one and only Sandy Munro from @MunroLive - who is not only helping Arcimoto streamline its production line process, but also had some very insightful things to say about the EV industry.
Thank you to Sandy and his team for allowing us the time to chat - and for helping us out when we had an audio equipment failure during the interview, graciously providing us with their copy of the interview audio!

Nobody (including you) knows what Japanese are doing, they are very traditional. They don't start teasing years in advance, promising, delaying and cancelling half of their promises. @@buddy1155 this sounds like wishful thinking. I cant imagine a world where Toyota lets Ford beat them on technology. And these companies HAVE BEEN teasing products that are disappointingly disjointed from reality. So maybe those products are smokescreens... But it is not 1985 anymore. They are going to seriously lose customer base if they continue this tack of showing us renderings for vehicles we know will never exist and reiterating that hydrogen is the only future.

@@buddy1155 physics are universal. You are correct. Which means hydrogen is never going to get easier to transport or store or transfer. It is never going to get less reactive or less leak prone. It is NEVER going to be more efficient to use energy to extract hydrogen from methane or water than it is to directly use that energy in a battery. So the only way to really solve those steps is to eliminate them by having hydrogen formation and energy extraction in a closed loop inside the vehicle and that is also a battery. 🤷

You know what's sort of telling about Arcimoto? There's a lot of gush from EV KZfaqrs, but not one has actually said they'll get one. Even you, when talking about getting a Lightning, but wanting a smaller daily driver, seemingly would rather get an Aptera. This really goes to the heart of the problem with Arcimoto and the way they make it sound like they have a "mission". They make an expensive toy and they know they can ride the hype from Tesla if they wrap it up in a "mission". It looks like a fun toy, but not for the price they're asking, and not as a car replacement.
@andrasbiro3007

A lot of people want one and some already have it. I would by one in a heartbeat if I were living in the US. I hope it comes to Europe some day. Also, with Sandy and Gali on board, it's very hard to fail. Gali from Hyperchange is an extremely successful investor, and he didn't just buy the stock, he joined the board. And Sandy Munro is the king of manufacturing, if anyone can bring this to market at an affordable price and high quality, it's Sandy.

I said in our recent coverage that I’d absolutely get one, IF it can bring the price down the way the company claims it will as it scales up manufacturing. At its current price, the FUV is a fabulous toy for individuals, though I can understand the sense it makes for businesses - Winter

Another expensive toy. Some people prattle on about their "carbon foot print" like to get these impractical "toys" and many of them, lecture me me on being green. Excuse me, I don't even own a car and my home is smaller then yours. My city 🏙️ life carbon footprint is smaller then my rural life footprint. In Aroostook county Maine I has a 70acre spread on a river. While the house was solar. I lost some on having a old F-150 and a hyundai accent.

It seems like they're working on making a comeback, because when I search them I see new videos from the Arcimoto account, but I don't see much from other channels. Most videos are not making it clear just how safe the FUV really is. The certified roll cage combines with the six point harness to rival the safety of any small car but it does that without air bags, doors or a helmet. Fast refers to speed - miles per hour. Quick refers to acceleration - 1.5 G of acceleration. They are separate terms used in technical spaces (which Sandy would be very familiar with,) frequently. For example, the new Tesla Model S Plaid is the world's *QUICKEST* production car. Tesla only uses the word "quickest" anywhere in their own words. Tesla never said "fastest." (Because it doesn't have the highest top speed, just the best 0-60.)

I like the Arcimoto, but they need to eventually give it a somewhat longer range and a semifast charging option. I would be fine if they were extra cost options for someone to consider it as an only car. I really like the Deliverator version, but if it was modular to swap in the back seat or the larger cargo box, it would be even cooler. I could just be a little depressed learning the F-150 Lightning production schedule making it less likely I will be getting a truck soon. Ford and Tesla are crushing me. Apparently they may not even fill the orders they have now before they roll out the new version of F-150 Lightning in 2025, which maybe I want more than this one. I may have to get a gas pickup till then unless Atlis?

No. Tests were done on the very streamlined Deliverator with doors and windows. No measurable range difference of note. The front profile tapers back to a much smaller rear end. Owners in rainy Washington and Oregon have no problem with rain. Elbows get damp, so what? We have heated seats, hand grips and heated defroster. There are now 3 videos of it in rain and snow. I stay dusty bones dry in mine in rain above 30 mph as the pressure wave forces all rain away from the driver's sides. The speed you choose has a much greater effect on range than streamlining. Same as with cars.

An apt name for the full line of Arcimoto vehicles is SCUV = Southern California Utility Vehicle. The perfect vehicle for places where it's warm and sunny most if not all the time. Yes, you can add weather protection of a sort, for chilly days or the occasional rain shower. But people who live in places that get deadly heat, bitter cold, heavy rain, and deep snow are not going to be lining up to buy the Arcimoto -- and that's a lot of America. The breathlessly rapturous coverage of the Arcimoto on TE borders on cult-like.

He said Europeans only like buying European cars that's not exactly true. One American car company makes cars that are designed around the style that Europeans like. Think about Ford, all the Escorts, Cosworths, Capre, they made a massive range of different cars specifically for the European market and Europeans bought them in the tens of millions. Europeans love Fords. All other American car companies make cars the size of a cathedral which Europeans don't like. If American car companies don't design for Europeans then you can keep it. Europeans like smaller cars, and cars that can go around corners, and cars where the build quantity is high. Hatchbacks and estates are popular. American car companies except Ford just make cars Europeans don't like. As for Tesla, I'm surprised they sell as well as they do. But I'm think VW will be out selling Tesla by multiple times once VW gets all it's production ramped up across it's entire range. Because the style of car is just more the flavour that Europeans go for.

I'm more concerned about the decision that was made to stop holing up all winter with 4 cords of firewood and a food stash and snowshoes in northern climates, instead bashing through all nature offers by the brute force of very inefficient fossil fueled vehicles. We are paying for that now. The Arcimoto is one part of the fix for that mistake.
