Properly preparing your traps is one of the most critical aspects of trapping. Traps are expensive, and if not cared for they will not provide you with many years of service. If they are properly prepared, traps will last you for many years. There are multiple methods for preparing traps, dying, waxing, dipping, painting, and they all work well in their different ways. The most important this is that your traps get treated with something. Not only does this protect them, but it also helps with scent contamination if you're predator trapping. I’ve wondered if you boiled a couple gallons of water, turn off the heat and melted about a pound of wax on top of the water if it’d work. Heat the dyed trap just a bit and submerge it slowly through the wax into the water, remove and hang to dry. I got the idea from watching people hydro dip with spray paint. The wax would float on the water surface (if it’s not boiling) and coat the trap before it even reaches the water.

It works exactly like that. Fill pot with water and melt a thin coat of wax. Takes about 1/8” floating on the top to pull wax through. Just place trap in the water and give it a minute to heat up and slowly pull through the wax. Something that is often not mentioned is to clean the wax off the end of the dog and catch afterwards especially if you night latch.

Walnut hulls "same purpose as trap dye"? What might that purpose be?? To fool the worms??

Depends on what you're trapping. In general I'd leave them to air out for a little while regardless but if you're trapping predators/canines I would definitely let them air out and after a few weeks put them in a tote with pine/cedar boughs and/or dirt to try and give them a more natural cover scent

Is just dying traps good enough? How about just spray painting?

I’m sure this is a stupid question but do I still need to wax them if I dip them in speed dip or does the gas coat them? I’m new at this first year

You don't have to wax, you can, but its not necessary. The wax is just an additional protective coating. Some people only wax and don't dye. Its all personal preference. I haven't waxed mine in years

Use walnut hulls just like you would logwood dye. It will probably take more hulls than dye, but if you've got plenty of them then its no problem. Just place the hulls in the bottom of the pot you are dying your traps in, fill with water and simmer your traps for 15-20 minutes. Maybe longer if you think they need a little more color

Awesome video, have you used full metal jacket?

I have used full metal jacket this past trapping season. I'll probably be using it going forward for mid season retreatment of traps, its just so darn easy and you don't have to worry with airing out or anything like that

I spray painted most of my coyote traps and let them dry outside hanging up and then dipped them in full metal jacket works great

How would I take the wax off my traps?
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 7 жыл бұрын
If you boil them in dawn to clean them the wax will come off, but you have to be careful to skim the wax off or else it will get right back on the traps when you pull them out of the water. If you've got access to a small cement mixer you could throw them in there with some sand and small rocks and that will get the wax off.

Thanks a lot I have millions of walnut trees in my yard could you explain to me how to use wall nuts to dye your traps?
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 6 жыл бұрын
All you need is the hulls, but the nuts won't hurt anything. Just get a large pot of water, not boiling but warm and put several handfuls of hulls in. I've never seen any specific measurement, so adding more won't hurt, but enough that it turns the color of your water to a dark brown/black color. Then put your traps in and let them simmer for 15-20 mins and pull out to hand, if they have a good coat of rust on them they should take the dark color and it be noticeable when you pull them out of the pot. If they aren't dark enough you can soak them longer or let them dry and put them in again for a redip. Once they dry they are ready to use

+Coyote Trapping School your very helpful I'm only 13 and I'm been trying to trap coyotes but they always pull my traps out of the ground thinking of double staking.
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah if they are pulling stake and all you need to beef it up. You got short chain on your traps? Double staking would be a good move

+Coyote Trapping School is their a special swivel I have to buy or can I just use the swivel it comes with it or so I don't have to worry about it just use a 3 foot long rebar with a nut welded on top and stake the trap down.
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 6 жыл бұрын
You could go with longer rebar, and keep the swivel you've got now. With single stakes I'd recommend longer trap chain, typically the way a coyote jacks the stake out of the ground is with short chain he pulls straight up and the stake gives slightly, the swivel slides down some and he slowly works the stake out. With longer chain he is pulling away from the stake instead of straight up. Here are 2 different options for ends for double/cross staking www.minntrapprod.com/Double-Stake-Swivels/productinfo/DSW-100/ and www.minntrapprod.com/Chestnut-Double-Stake-Ring-JC-Conner/productinfo/JCRING-12/

Those look like pecans to me. The segmented hulls give it away. As well as the brown nut shells with black stripes. Walnut, American Black Walnut, doesn't have segmented hulls. The nut shell isn't smooth like what's on the table, they are very rough on the outside. The hulls are solid all the way around, not divided into petals. They don't open up like a flower bud, you have to break them open to get to the nut shell that is inside. When they fall they are green, when they lay on the ground for a few weeks they turn black. Put some gloves on and just twist them in your hands and the hull will break up into pieces. Then toss the pieces, hull fragments and nuts into the pot.

Had to laugh when you mentioned that it could be flammable so keep a piece of plywood to put over it. Wood reinforced with glue certainly isn't going to catch fire! Nice vid though otherwise.

Haha, I hadn't thought about that, good point, but its all about smothering the flame, it won't last long enough to catch the wood on fire, unless its been soaking up lighter fluid or something
