In this week's episode, we have the privilege of learning from the talented Kayle Browning - a top-tier trap shooting pro with numerous accolades, including being the Number One Lady in the Nation and a 2020 Olympian (read more).
In this episode, we explore the different Trap Shooting disciplines, including American Trap and International Trap (Bunker Trap). Kayle enlightens us on the nuances that set these disciplines apart, such as varied angles and speeds in International Trap, making each shot a unique challenge. Whether you're a seasoned shooter or new to the sport, Kayle's insights will deepen your understanding of Trap Shooting.
Eye dominance plays a crucial role in shooting accuracy, and Kayle addresses a commonly asked question about how to manage it effectively. She offers valuable advice for cross-dominant shooters, suggesting ways to temporarily blur the dominant eye's vision using chapstick or tape. For those aiming to excel in the sport, Kayle emphasizes the importance of seeking expert guidance to overcome eye dominance issues.
Mental preparation is key to success in any sport, and Kayle shares her pre-shot routine that helps her maintain focus and confidence during events. Breathing techniques, focusing on well-practiced mechanics, and embracing familiarity with her shooting techniques empower Kayle to break one target at a time, a vital strategy in the challenging domain of Trap Shooting.
The discussion doesn't end there. Kayle also delves into shotgun chokes and explains her preferences for different shooting scenarios. Whether it's using interchangeable chokes for competitive shooting or fixed barrels for hunting, Kayle's insights offer a wealth of knowledge for shooters to make informed decisions.
Moreover, with current restrictions limiting access to shooting ranges, Kayle provides invaluable tips for home practice. Gun mounts in front of a mirror help shooters perfect their form and correct any canting issues. Eye drills allow rapid training of the eyes to focus on specific targets, improving overall accuracy. And for those with ShotKam cameras, Kayle highlights the power of video analysis as a tool for self-improvement.
In this episode, Kayle showcases her expertise and passion for Trap Shooting, making it an unmissable resource for aspiring shooters. From understanding the disciplines to mastering eye dominance, mental rehearsal, and efficient home practice, viewers are sure to gain valuable insights that will elevate their shooting skills.

One if the best guide vids I've watched. I recently started shooting trap, but my shotgun is for action shooting. It's a complete different sport with a complete different speed shotgun. The range has a pro that will be working with me on learning to use the correct tool for the game. It's going to be difficult due to being left eye dominance with strong right hand. This will only be for fun, so I wont be going to extremes in relearning, but this is a great explination video, especially with the addition of your cam video. Thank you!!

Really enjoyed the interview! I do have a question though, even though it may sound completely off the wall. As coaching and training techniques evolve like all sports do and people are getting better and better there ever be a time when international trap is shot from the Logan mouth?

I will take these tips with me. We have a underground trap house on a hillside on the farm. We sometimes have up to 80 shooters. Some of them compete in leagues so I’m studying up😂

A couple of points I would like to highlight. I have found the retical point is higher than my visual hold point, much like in this video, except even more so on my videos. ie. the reticle is much higher than my hold point at the start of the video, but they seem to converge as I raise the gun and follow the target, and stay aligned as I shoot. The pellets can be seen heading for exactly where the reticle is pointing, and if I am on target the clay will shatter at the point where the retical was as I fired. I have pointed this out on Shotkam's page, but got no response! Secondly, the video shows the retical pointing directly at the clay as the shot was taken, and shattered the clay. That was a fast rising clay, surely some lead should have been used. Which makes me question is the retical "zeroed" properly in this video. Was the gun actually aiming slightly higher than the retical would suggest.? I have seen another video, where one of the world's top shooters has demonstrated the shotkam, where he shattered the clay, but the retical was way below the target as the shot was taken. When questioned about why this was, he explained "his gun shoots high". Surely this was a case of the retical not being "zeroed" properly too. The shotkam is a marvelous piece of equipment, but has to be set-up properly. Otherwise it's just a nice camera with a dot or circle or whatever, giving you false information.

6:40 had that exact problem when I started trap shooting. Couldn’t keep both eyes open, probably because of the amount of training I had with rifles, so keeping both eyes open was…. weird to me. I am know a 2-week old trap shooter and am getting better. All at the age of 16, which I’ve heard is quite impressive

Same here. I actually gave up on both eyes and ended up doing much better with only one eye.

If a shooter is seeing a canted gun after his shot, but finds his mount and his mechanics are not the problem, it's likely a case of pulling his face off the gun or pushing the gun off his face depending on which side he's shooting. This can lead to a wild goose chase trying to adjust the stock or mount when it's really the illusion of cant being produced by changing the face placement during the swing.
