Explaining what a derecho storm is, how they differ from tornadoes and what it's like to be trapped in one. On May 16, 2024 we were caught outside when a deadly derecho slammed into Houston Texas.

NOT FOR REBROADCAST
A derecho is a classification of powerful long-lived windstorms.
Typical derechos can blow down large trees and wreak havoc on power lines. Tornadoes often like to hang out with derechos and so derechos are often accompanied by tornado warnings.
But what’s the difference?
The damaging winds in derechos typically occur in one general direction along a relatively straight swath, whereas tornado winds as we all know are circulating. In fact, the word "tornado" originates from the Spanish words “tronada," meaning thunderstorm and "tornar," to twist or turn. To distinguish lower end tornado damage from long-lived straight line wind-storm damage, we again use Spanish... “derecho” which can mean straight.
DERECHO QUALIFICATIONS
For a windstorm to qualify as a derecho It must include wind gusts of at least 58 mph or greater along most of its length. (50 knots or 93 km/h)
It must have a path of continuous or intermittent wind damage
that extends at least 400 miles (650 km)
and is at least 60 miles wide. (100 km)
DERECHO TECHNICAL DEFINITION
NOAA/NWS defines a derecho as a continuous or intermittent path of wind damage from a squall line of thunderstorms, bow echo, or quasi-linear convective system (QLCS) that extends at least 400 miles and is at least 60 miles wide. In other words: It’s a swath of wind damage from mostly non-tornadic thunderstorms that extends for 400+ miles and is at least 60 miles wide.
When people are hit by a derecho, many believe it was a tornado.
If you correct them, they’re usually disappointed or disagree.
This is because being in a derecho often makes for an un-macho dinner party story. But derechos can be dead serious.
THE DEADLY DERECHO / HOUSTON TX May 16, 2024
At least eight lives were lost in the event that spanned from Texas to Florida. With hurricane force wind gusts reported up to 100 mph, countless trees and power lines were brought down causing massive power outages.A couple transmission towers collapsed from estimated 115 mph winds near the top of the towers. Damage occurred to numerous structures and thousands of windows were blasted out in downtown Houston alone. All of this inflicted over a billion dollars in damage.

This exactly. As an iowan who was hit by the August 10th, 2020 derecho I know it all too well. For a tornado impact on a single town you can call on your neighboring communities for mutual aid, but when everyone in your area is dealing with the same thing there is no mutual aid. With that any state aid and federal aid also has to be triaged out to the communities that need it the most.

I was in disaster response and worked over 60 disasters and have been in 4 of my own. One being a director. Half of us couldn't even respond and was the worst event we dealt with. They are basically inside out tornados stretched hundreds of miles wide. It sounded like a freight train, and the sky was sickly green. People really don't understand how nasty these things are. I would rather deal with a tornado.

@@g.sanders6916, I was just going to mention that one. I'll never forget that day here in Chicagoland. It was the beginning of the pandemic and my niece's birthday. Heard Iowa got whooped before us and then it hit my area spawning numerous EF0 and EF1 tornadoes, some a few miles from me, and took out numerous trees in our backyard. Never heard of or been in a derecho event before nor do I ever want to be in another one ever again. 😬 Hope you were OK that day.

Ontario and Quebec, Canada experienced a pretty wild derecho in May 2022. Some tornadoes touched down. The damage was extensive, stretching hundreds of kilometers, with power lines down and farms torn down (our neighbour's house was completely destroyed by a fallen tree). 1st time in my life I made a bee line for my basement. It was hard for people to understand what happened. Thanks for posting about this phenomenon! Ps. Canada tracks tornados. It's called the Northern Tornado Project (NTP). Was in the devistating Derecho that hit Jackson Wyoming/Grand Teton National Park in the mid-70s. I will never forget watching the wall move across the valley toward the cinder block school I was teaching in. Pushed all our windows in (I had pulled the blinds down quickly before which helped protect the students a bit from broken glass). Closed the Park for weeks and took days to rescue many from once heavily forested campgrounds which were completely mowed down. But you are right...not a very "cool" story to tell at parties. As Ken Jeong would say, "But did you DIE?"

It was chainsaws for days when we got ours two years ago. When the power came back on after four days, I thought there was a coyote fight. Nope, it was the neighbors whooping for joy that the power came back on. I didn’t even notice the power had returned at first! It was your videos that got me into reading radar maps. I got the heads up from another townships reddit that something ugly was on its way. I was able to get the whole back yard prepped for the storm, and multiple hundreds of dollars were saved. Bob the ornamental flamingo still stands proud to this day! Glad you two are safe!

May of 2022 up in Ottawa, we had one. My across the street neighbour lost their crabapple tree. Just about took out their neighbour's car. So many trees were down. We were lucky though. No damage to our place. And given that this was the end to the pandemic, it was awesome to see people helping others with the aftermath. Definitely something I will never forget.

Hey Hank! I was in a derecho last year on June 18 in Tulsa. Man… those 100MPH winds are crazy to hear slamming the roof. We had a decent sized branch barely dodge hitting our home.

We experienced a microburst/derecho in my city recently, and the hail was so hard it blew up a transformer down the street from me, and was also a straight-line wind event.
