Any type of perch would be better at eating snails than what he presently has in the pond. And your right about the health issues they bring to a pond.. Chances are very good the snail population will explode in the pond if a predator that prefers them is not introduced, and Red ear is both native and perfect for the job..

Just don't copy what's being done with that pond as far as fish stocking and habitats go. There's going to be some serious issues down the road. Catching that larger bass twice and multiple catches of others in a pond that size is a red flag. Not to mention the variation in size is an issue. I'm just a fisheries biologist so don't pay any attention to me.

You need to keep setting traps in the swamp to catch more pirate perch, I wonder if you could get a pair or two to breed in cedar falls. Also I second the red ear sunfish (shellcracker) idea helps with snails and fun for the kiddos.

The crayfish will get into your other pond and they will start to thrive in there. I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think they will burrow enough or deep enough to cause any real problems. Yes those looked like frog eggs. The cattails might be awesome for your pond. If they stayed right on the edge then that would be a better border than what you have and would be an excellent place for more food to hold up and hide.

Crayfish found their way into our pond naturally. We built the pond in 1999 and I never saw any until a few years ago when I started finding dead ones in the grass. On rainy nights you’ll see them out in the grass and I guess they get stuck out there. Now I go out and throw them back in.

I remember way back watching the backyard pond build and I’ve loved your content since. Maybe you could throw in some in some more frequent videos of just fighting your pond, you could dedicate videos to tips and tricks for seasonal fishing, your favorite fishing methods, and even go as far as showing fishing set ups for beginners all the way up to more advanced fishermen tactics and load outs.

The wildlife at your pond is spectacular, esp the eagles.. BTY, both the black and red headed are vultures, respectively, turkey vultures and black vultures. (Juvenile turkey vultures have dark heads ,)

Very cool episode the only concern I can think of with the snails is if they take up a bunch of calcium and deprive the fish of it, other wise they seem cool.
