The otter set at 8:05 and the trigger. I have mine off to one side and the one of the triggers up and one bent towards the center at 90 degrees. Like the letter "L". Gives the otter a nice clear opening and they will hit the trigger wire as they go through. They will be walking not swimming so they will hit it with their body. 11:33 I LOVE that set!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Adjust the Conibear triggers to take the movement out of them before the fire and you can get hip catches down to almost 0.

That’s really interesting. When you mentioned that there was a lot of otters in that area, and that there was a lot of “Brook Trout”, I find that really interesting. I was trout fishing in the spring (April), in the Gatineau Park. When trout fishing from shore, I could hear otters calling to each other and making lots of vocalizing. I was trout fishing near a large pool between two large beaver ponds. I saw a large brook trout racing up and down the shore line, before the trout escaped through the culvert to the next pond. How often do you see large brook trout in 2’ of clear water! Because the spring suckers were running, there were many, and in a mass, I thought the Otters would easily feed on the suckers, but it appeared that they were chasing the brook trout. I learned that the otter can and does eat and feed on brook trout. Thanks for sharing your vids from Gaspse which I have visited for Moose hunting and think It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Should have been an amazing experience to see and hear them in their natural habitat. Here in Gaspe there is only brook trout in our water plans. I'm pretty sure they would better love to eat a trout then a sucker! Thanks for sharing your experience!

@@GaspeOutdoors I think you understand these things. I’ve spent all my long life fascinated by wildlife, and I often encounter new things, places and behaviour of animals. I’ve made 2 nice hunting trips to gaspse, and find it similar to my original home in western Newfoundland,,, amazing. When I saw the salmon rivers in Gaspe, I’ve got to go back. And I’ve never fished for strippers,,so definitely going to be talking to my hunting/fishing buddy from here (ottawa/Gatineau), to make a trip for fishing… like your fishing vids..!

When I set for otter like you show I set my 220 triggers on top and have the wires set like you do. That way you get them behind the ears . I also use 330 in deeper water and have my triggers set the same way most of the time. some times on the bottom. For to stop from catching otters around the waste you have your wires closer .

My largest otter here in Alabama USA was a 28 pound male in a #280. A regular 58"x 7" otter board was too small for it. I had one made 65"x8' that was barely big enough.

This is a huge otter. They sure get a lot bigger down south then here in the North where winter last 5-6 months with ice covering everything. Thanks for watching!

We use 280's with great success, this way even if a beaver comes along we're good to go, and no muskrat is lost either.

280 is probably the best otter trap you are right.

Nice Video. Any advice for trapping Otter in a stream where the water level fluctuates a lot? My stream goes up and down a couple feet at a time on a regular basis. I hate to have to pull and reset every time.

Thanks! In this situation i will set my traps at the bottom edge set and let them set at any water level. Bottom edge sets will work anytime. If you don't know the set, just search on KZfaq and you will find some good videos about it. Hope it can help you!

You put in only one 220, shouldn't you double up on your sets??,one above, one below the dam.

ya know, if you curl the ends of the trigger wire and attach a short length of fine, dulled ,not shiny copper wire between the ends, the otter might not get as far through the connibear before it goes off.
