Selecting trapping lures doesn't have to be a daunting task. Although there are hundreds of trapping lures on the market you can't get bogged down in the process of trying to pick which lure to use. For starting out you just need a handful of lures, a good bait, and some good urine. Keep records of what you are catching with which lure and you will soon see which lures are your top performers. I believe this is the question I've been asking will it hurt to put sheep will in the bag with your bait urine and lures I think I'm going to put my coyote lures and gland lures and urine in a bottle or jar so it won't get on my sheep's wool it's just so aggravating with my OCD since not mixing or getting on other supplies

I found O'Gormans Long line Lures and baits. I had my dog take a paint of food lure from my ruck sack and chew through the bottom and eat every bit of it :-)

Great video helps a lot. One thing that works well for me when trapping coyotes is when I catch a beaver, cut off his tail and cut it up in small pieces and put it in the dirt hole along with lure. I have also found that beaver sent works good

For whatever reason predators are attracted to beaver smell. I'll sometimes use a beaver castor lure as a change up on the coyote line

+M&C Outdoors I always say I'm going to put them all in a mini fridge during the off season, but never do. I just try to store everything in a cool dry place, which is hard to come by in the summer in the South. But, knock on wood, I've never had any issues. Bait and lures in most cases have tainted ingredients, but before they are sold there are preservatives added to keep them from rotting any more. Urine would probably be good to keep in a fridge or just try to use it up and buy fresh every year, but I've used urine that's sat all summer and still caught game so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it rains do you have to re scent your trap set?

Typically no. In my opinion rain actually helps. I think sometimes the bait and lure we use is so strong that it can shy animals away. I regularly catch coyotes after a rain, even a couple days after and I think that has something to do with it, the scent isn't quite so strong so they feel more comfortable approaching. Just a theory I have. I will reapply urine sometimes after a rain but not always.

What location do you place your lure on your set?

Depends on the type of set, a dirthole I'll place bait down the hole and usually smear some lure on the back lip of the hole and put the stick down the hole too. On a flat or post set I squirt urine on the post and smear gland lure at the base of the post. I like to have at least 2 smells per set, and spreading them out doesn't hurt.

What type of scat do you us for various animals like bobcats,fox, and coyotes? In videos I have seen all sorts of scat being used from deer scat to house cat scat. It would really help new people like me to know more about how you collect, store, and place the scat at a trap set plus what scat to use for which sets. The sheer volume of lures, urine, and bait out there is a bit overwhelming as every lure maker would have you believe their products will bring animals running to your traps. What common sense tells me is that good trappers like you and many others use baits, lures, and urine at nearly every set yet those sets often don't produce anything. On a dozen trap line, sometimes there are no catches at all for a couple of days, or maybe one or two catches for a catch rate of about 10% or so. A low catch percentage makes me think I could bottle my own urine, squirt it around a trap set, and possibly lure in an animal or two out of curiosity that steps in the trap and gets caught. So that makes me ask, ""Just how effective are all those lure products anyway?" I've seen a lot of videos where people just mix up a stinky home made bait using types of food from their house and catch critters about as good as folks using commercial products. To me, trapping seems a lot like fishing. You can use all the super hyped and expensive lures you want and fish as hard as you can but you still may, or may not, catch anything. Your thoughts?

I like to pick up scat as I'm riding dirt roads setting or scouting. I put it in a tupperware bin I keep in my lure bag. www.coyotetrappingschool.com/recycling-scat-for-trapping-coyotes/, I thought I had a video but couldn't find it. I think its one of my quick tip videos. Usually I'm picking up coyote scat but I'll put a squirt of urine on it at the set to freshen it up. So far as bait and lure, there are so many out there, and for the most part they will all work. Location is the biggest key, some locations you don't need bait, and poor locations all the bait in the world won't help you. I am a believer in good bait and lure and that it will up your odds of making a catch, but its tough to say what "good" is. I like to keep records of what I use and what I make catches with so at least I know out of the baits and lures that Im' using what has worked well for me in my area.

mink gland is a killer k9 lure an badger gland is deadly but do not over lure with them

Crazy as it sounds I've been successful with a long distance lure and bacon, porkchop, and hamburger meat greases mixed and poured over a cotton ball on hoes for coyotes.
