Trash compactor not working? This video demonstrates how to test a directional switch on a trash compactor. The start switch, safety switch, door switch, on-off switch, and directional switch are commonly replaced parts for a trash compactor not starting.

My Broan 1051-H compactor went half way down and stopped. (It could have stopped anywhere or not started). The video was an inspiration for me to place my compactor on its side on my kitchen table, remove the back plate and then remove 4 nuts that hold the 2 rails to the top of the unit. I tested every switch for continuity and all was good. I then started gently tugging on all the disconnects (wire connectors) that were not connected to any switches and one of the wires that attaches to the motor tab came right off. BTW I tested for power to the motor first and there was none. So it turns out the the wire was fatigued and severed internally from years of vibration but was still being held on to the disconnect by the shielding. Turned out to be 4 hours of my time and a 2 cent part.

If the ram returns to its top position and continues to go up, resulting in loud banging, try bending the metal lever outwards so that it can detect the ram is up and stop the motor.

I have a Kitchen Aid compactor and bending the top directional switch fixed mine from thumping when it reached the top. It is very finicky it may take a few small bends to get it back working correctly

Did the dual top limit switch and directional switch get replaced with a single switch?

My trash compactor is getting stuck and will not compact. When I move to the On position, the motor turns on but then it make a noise like it can not go further. If I keep it in this position, it shuts down and I have to wait 10 minutes before there is any power. If I switch to the Start position it does the same thing. I tried testing the directional switch and it tested continuity where it was suppose to and didn't where it wasn't.After this didn't work, I opened the motor gear and twist CW and the trash compactor moved down. when I put it back together, and turned it on it returned to the normal position but when it got to the top, it made that same noise. To me it sounds like a directional switch issue but I checked that and it was ok. Do you have any ideas? Thanks

my trash compactor will run perfectly if i give the chain a little nudge. sometimes it will run 2or3 times then i have to nudge the chain again?

How can I send you a video? My trash compactor won’t start on its own. If I barely move the chain it will work perfectly.

Great video, The issue I'm having is the trash compactor returns to the up position, but doesn't stop. It continues with a banging sound and requires us to hit the stop button. I thought it was the directional switch so I replaced via the directions of the video. Great video, but it didn't fix my issue. Any suggestions?

Alberto Garrido I had to bend the silver lever on directional switch to make contact with the ram

Check the foot pedal switch, if that switch is sticking on the compactor wont stop on the return, hopefully its not too late for you, but may help others.

I own the compactor in the above video. My switch has two clicks when pushing down on the plunger. First click operates the first two sets of contacts, NO and NC. The second click operates the bottoms set of contacts. NO and NC on this switch is functioning as should on both sets. My problem, while in the "Solid Lock" position the ram will only go down and up while HOLDING the main on/off switch to the on position. The ram will not stop in the compact position but returns back to the up position, again while only holding the switch in the on position. The "Normal Unlocked" works as it should. This started right after I replace the gear on the drive chain. Have I done something wrong? Or do I just happen to have another problem? Where do I go from here? Thank you.

+Steven Holmes Thanks for reaching out to us! Nothing should have changed unless some wires pulled off and got put back on wrong. I would look at the solid pack switch and make sure the wires are still on it. You can also look at the wiring diagram on the unit and make sure the switches are wired correctly.

Thank you. I did pull the cover off that covers the motor. I will recheck the wires down there . Thank you much for replying.

The video is not clear enough regarding this point: When depressed the switch makes one click and then when depressed a bit more, it makes a second click. At the first click the top three contacts (COM, NC, NO) work as in the video. However the lower two contacts (COM, NC) seem to work ONLY after the second click. Is this how it's supposed to work?

Compactor has a hum that will not turn off

I had this problem....that is.....the compact goes up and doesn't stop....it just tries to continue to go up causing a "banging" at top and doesn't shutoff. I've replaced the directional switch but that didn't fix the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

I have the same problem, did you figure it out? I have replaced the limit/directional switch....

Check the foot pedal switch, if that switch is sticking down the compactor wont stop on the return, it was sticking down on mine and cleaning it so it returns freely fixed the issue, if you cant get it operating normally, replace it. Hopefully its not too late for you, but may help others.
