The finish came out really clean man. A buddy of mine brought me 2 pieces of logs from a tree they cut and right away I cut it to make a band saw box. Well, in about 3 days, it started splitting from a couple spots and the drawer go stuck also LOL. But it was my very first one so now I know to let them sit for a while to dry before I cut ha! Once you make one, you start making a bunch of them!

Looks great jay! By the way poplar is the top species of wood now being used in woodwork in new homes as in millwork and cabinetry which looks beautiful when stained with light to medium darkness pigment colors! I didn't believe it till I saw it!

Instead of slicing off the back, then slicing the fronts and backs off the drawers, , use 3 separate thin layers when making the blank, 1 on the front, 2 on the back, adhered with double-stick tape. After cutting the outside, unadhere the front and second back layers to make the feet, then readhere the front to cut the drawers, then unadhere the front and back first layers, to hallow out the drawers. Then apply glue where needed for final assembly.

A 1/8" blade will cut even tighter if you can find a good one. Keep in mind the teeth count. I have been told you never want to have more than 20-24 teeth in the wood at a time or you will notice burning. I cut this entire project without a single burn mark.

Enjoyed it very much! In my view, the crack doesn't add artistic intrigue to the box, but what do I know about art? (I think most of Picasso's stuff was unappealing). Artistic judgement's aside, your execution was outstanding. I hit it with a "Like".

Just an Idea, make the box slighty larger and the crack longer. Fill the crack in with a darker tone wood or redwood. Might be a cool design.

Im looking into buying a bandsaw mainly to do bandsaw boxes 4-5" thick hardwood . What size bandsaw would i need power wise ? 350w , 750w or bigger? Regards Gareth

I'm not a bandsaw expert by any means but keep in mind a lot has to do with the blade. A powerful bandsaw will have a hard time cutting thick hardwood with a high TPI blade.

You really don't want more than 20 teeth in the wood at a time. 4" / 20 teeth = 5 tpi. I used a 3/16" 4tpi skip tooth blade in this video. The slab was around 4" thick.

Hey Justin. Thanks for the heads up. I left that link up in case they resolve their site issue but also added a download for my copy below it. It's the same template but scaled down just slightly to fit on a regular 8.5x11 piece of paper. I believe his originals were 14" high so it's not much different.
