I found another FREE dresser on the side of the road! This little IKEA dresser was covered in a layer of peeling latex paint but I knew I could save it from the trash and do something cool. I used black chalk paint and some oh-so-trendy cane webbing to create a new modern design for this piece. I hope you enjoy!

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included kzfaq.infoUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

For your cane, try soaking it in water first, then staple to piece. Once it dries, it will tighten up to give you a nice taunt look.
@salvagedbykscott
@salvagedbykscott 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen that a few times. I was leery of the moisture ruining the freshly painted finish so I decided to skip that step. It ended up laying very flat on it own and I was able to get some good tension with my staples. If I ever do a larger panel I’ll definitely try the soaking method out. ❤️❤️

@@melissasubatch1324 for this purpose it doesn’t require a super taught finish and the wet cane would have damaged my paint finish.

It is such a relief to find things go awry for someone else and its not just me! I've refinished and sold many pieces and some times get a piece that has me frustrated to the point of wanting to throw in the towel! But I take a break from those pieces and go back later, telling them that "I always win" 😆 Thanks for being real.

I felt your deception and I loved your attitude towards the problem solving. I feel it's not always easy to live with our art not being perfectly perfect and fighting this sometimes doesn't help. I love how you said : This is not perfect, BUT I have tried new things and learnt something in the process. In the end, I feel that this is what makes us evolve as artists (and humans). Focusing on the positive rather than see what is not perfect. Your channel is inspiring in many ways ! Thanks for making such great content :)

Looks great! Tip for cutting a straight line with a jigsaw is clamp down a straight edge or long ruler on the piece so the saw’s base plate rides against it the correct distance away so the blade is on the cut line. That way you have a guide to follow against and the cut will be straight.

I've never had a problem with a topcoat over black but I did have a horror show on a custom birdhouse we made. It was a huge birdhouse they wanted in a Rutgers theme. I painted a large silver sword across the top to underscore the family's name, and a knight under it with the logo. It was hours of hand painting. We always sprayed an oil based topcoat on top of all the art, so when it was done I took it to the yard. I started the spray off the piece but as I swung onto the piece it clogged. So I pushed down harder on the button and BLECH huge blobs of poly shot out all over that gorgeous sword and the knight. Immediately the paint started to run and I watched all the hours of work just slide down the front of my piece. I had to wait for it to dry (that part killed me!!) then sand it all down to paint again. I literally cried. Now whenever I spray a piece I repeat "light coats! Light coats!" But that final poly stage always freaks me out now 😜

So cool!!! I appreciate the extra effort. I am not a #woodworker either though I enjoy flipping items for my art studio and recently a dingy vintage Vermont dresser for my wardrobe. It took over a month to complete the refurbishing and a month for the top coat to off gas but I'm using the dresser and I'm in awe that I didn't trash the project along the way! I read on a woodworking forum, on one of the many times I was researching for the dresser project, something along the lines of "The difference between woodworking and firewood is patience" that stuck with me!!!

I thought It came out great!!! My worst varnish incident happened last summer, I was upcycling a desk by painting it black. I got the spray paint on very even and smooth, then I decided to put a layer of polyurethane on it to protect the paint. I did this outside on a warm and windy summer day, I thought I lucked out with the weather.... nope!!!! Little debris carried by the wind got embedded into the polyurethane. Speckled piece of nature. I wasn’t going to sand it and start over, I just called the job “naturally rustic”.

Wow, what an incredible transformation. I normally do not like the cane look, but the way you designed it with just the top drawer having the caning made it much more elegant in my opinion. And the cutouts for drawer handles was so cute. I think you have great vision, and I am so impressed with how you made it a reality. I don't know if it's the same for painting, but I know in baking, you can use the same recipe on two different days and get different results due to changes in weather, temperature, and humidity. I wouldn't be surprised if painting furniture has some similarities. I live in an area where the weather two towns over can be completely different, so it might be different in an area with a more consistent climate.

I love this dresser! And i sable in furniture restoring/makeovers myself. I had an issue recently and it was such a silly mistake... I went to use a plolyurethane coat over my 3 coats of stain... The can said "will be milky white at application, dries crystal clear..." It dried milky white. Because my husband tinted the can without telling me.🤦🏻‍♀️ Resanded. Restained. Resealed. You live and learn!

You did a great job. For that paint "mistake" I probably would have just alternated the drawers to make it look like a purposeful pattern. But sometimes drawers have a certain spot in the carcass that they fit in, so maybe that wouldn't have worked. If you don't already have one, you should get yourself an oscillating tool. That gives you so many options with very fine control, it's a saw, it's scissors, it's a sander, it's a grinder. It's one of my very favorite tools and I have A LOT of tools. Harbor Freight has some inexpensive ones to try, otherwise, Rockwell makes a great heavy duty plug in version, and I also have a Milwaukee cordless version. They're so versatile.

Love the final piece, and appreciate that you walked through the problems & how they were solved. Sharing a tip - most paint stores will let you bring paint/stain back to them & will mix it for you w/their spinning/mixing machine. This can be a time-saver & help you get a good result, eg: very well-mixed paint.

Thank you so much for watching. The paint I used on this piece was mixed the same morning that I used it. Unfortunately topcoats cannot be shaken in paint shakers. That would create bubbles in the finish. Those products just need a gentle stir before use.

@@salvagedbykscott - Yes, yes! You're right about not shaking/vigorously mixing topcoats, so as not to introduce bubbles. I forgot! Love your videos.

another option would have been to switch the middle two drawers. then the oops would have looked purposeful. the dresser looks amazing. thank you for saving things from the landfill. an idea for furniture is to see if your town has a habitat store. they are an amazing organization; they help people build homes so they aren't homeless. the store is a way for residents to support local families and recycle furniture. they even deliver some items and will pick up items.

Hi Heather. Thanks so much for watching! Unfortunately I think that having any of the drawers a different shade would have still looked like a mistake no matter how they were organized. I try to get to my local HFH restores at least once a week. I’ve got a few “thrift with me” videos, if you’re interested 😉
