In a nutshell, commercial compost is expensive or risky, and I need some good, safe compost for my gardening. I've always thought about using cardboard and coffee in the past, but just haven't pulled the trigger till now. I think it has promise.

When I saw you were going to shred those boxes I thought "I wish he'd show his shredder"! Seconds later...lol. I've been researching different ways to compost everything I have in my residential yard and and with the materials I have on hand (darn Amazon boxes seem to reproduce faster than rabbits) and after watching your video I had one of those "I can do that" moments". Off to pick up a couple off trash cans with lids, visit the 3 Starbucks around me and start shredding. Thanks a bunch and Happy Gardening.

I thought the pipe was for watering Brent, my thoughts are that you may loose some heat through it. Nice material and it may help you if you collected the leaves when they actually fell and keep them in plastic bags where they would stay moist. Really good video and well explained. Did you find any worms. 🍅Happy gardening, Terry King.

Who knows on heat. Most of what I read requires a larger pile to heat up, but by going 6 months, heat isn't as critical. Next batch, no pipe. I don't think it need the extra air it may provide. I'll keep at it till I find what works well...I think. Really on the wet leaves? Seems like it would make a mushy, slimy mess locked in a bag. What's your experience there? No worms.

I think I'll head out there soon and bag the dry leaves though. I'm thinking you might have meant "while green" vs "while moist" which might mean less mess?? You can clarify for me. Thanks Terry.

@C3Voyage I personally would collect the leaves during the fall Brent so not green, but fresh off the trees as they fall to the ground. Bag them up or create another bin and add some rain water this will help you when you add them to the cardboard and coffee grounds. I keep my leaves for two years before harvesting them to add to my compost mixes or for seed compost I add 3 year old woodchips at 50% to leaf mould. If just using bags make holes at the bottom so the moisture can escape and worms can get in.

Just wanted to say, that if you have a 20 or even a 30 gal aluminum or tin trash can, you could put your leaves in it and use a weed eater to mulch up the leaves.
