Great ideas those clips to help hold the shade cloth on. I use SS reusable zip ties, 2" wide nylon strapping (used for holding flex duct work above attic insulation originally) and mini bungee cords from harbor freight to hook into all of my grommet holes on my 40% shade cloth. My weather forecast for the next week is above 110 degrees so plants would definitely wither without shade cloth. Without your 'hold over strap' you defiantly would be sailing away in the wind.. Stay hydrated and happy gardening Brent.

Do you let seeds dry or can germinate wet? If dry, how long do you let them dry for?
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage Күн бұрын
This is a wise question and one I had a very long time ago and couldn't find an answer to so all along, I've tested it. With tomato, there is no time limit really. They will germinate wet after taking from the tomato or up to 10 or more years. If frozen and vacuum-sealed, more than 30 years. The other seed most people plant, cucurbits (melon, watermelon, cucumber, and squash) seem to benefit from a thorough dry till they "snap". Takes about a week in an AC home lying on a paper plate.

Ultimately, we'll have to see how it goes. We're working with a patent attorney versed in agriculture. I'd be interested in reading that decision if you can point me to it. I do know that major ag regularly patents cultivars of all manner of vegetables under a utility patent. Still, all I can learn helps. Thanks for commenting.

This is the first link after Googling: "Plant patents can be granted for the invention or discovery of any asexually reproduced new and distinct variety of plant. This includes cultivated sports, mutants, hybrids, and newly found seedlings, but excludes tuber-propagated plants or plants found in an uncultivated state." This is the second Google: "Plants obtained by technical processes are generally considered patentable under the law. This includes plants that have been genetically engineered or where a genetic modification (or mutation) of a plant is created by technical means."

I have a PhD in Crop and soil science, made GMO plants myself. I find this modification to be mostly harmless (mind you it took 20 years for it to be released). There are idiotic GMOs that have been made (GM canola mainly). But considering the chemicals we have been using everywhere, I'm not especially worried about most GMOs. I wanted to buy seeds of this one but I didnt want to deal with the patent issue. I save my own seeds and I'm also a market gardener so I wouldnt be able to sell the fruit. Well, it's tricky with each type. Most of the big ones are now in a hammock so they're supported. The really long Tahitian Melon Squash, the fatter Kabocha, the Greek Sweet Red, and the Sweet Meat. A couple I let go just to see if the stem/plant can support it so I'll know in the future if it's possible. Some like the Honeynut butternut don't need it. The fruit is small. So, yeah, most heavy ones are in hammocks now.

I agree with you more than disagree in the sense of protections as long as it doesn't restrict choice. I want the absolute smallest government possible. As an individual, I want the ability to choose in every facet of life, not have choices made for me. In that, and being a veteran, government's #1 should be to protect it's citizens from harm such as attacks from outside our borders and crime from within (theft, murder, assault, etc). Harmful food undisclosed fits that too. Also, I've been to so many countries and do enjoy many other cultures. Ours is by far the best. It's not close.

@C3Voyage We use "gene splicing" all the time in labs. It has its medical uses. The problem with GMOs...which use gene splicing...isn't the technique. It is what is inserted. Let's say I got 2 tomato varieties in my garden. One is this GMO. The second is a heirloom. What pollinated what? Cause I can 100% guarantee no one knows. And my heirloom...is now worthless

Love those 'compact' tomato plants...just the right size for a home garden. Totally agree with your assessment as to the growth/fruiting habits of your vertical squashes. Since all fruiting plants from their standpoint only grow to make more seed to reproduce and when a vining plant runs out of the ability to meet the needs of existing fruit by not setting down more roots, it focuses on what it can support. (That was too long of a sentence). Really enjoyed this video, as all of yours and the fact that you share the 'why' you do things the way you do...end game so to speak. As I go thru the video.. First, my I phone SE takes photos of the California poppies famous in my area and is a 4/10 at best to accurately show the vibrance of color compared to the real deal. Appreciate your showing pics from different cameras. With cell structure variations, what I expected to see with something called a purple tomato vs just the outer skin being purple/black. At least they used a plant/plant genetic modification vs say inserting the color from coral into a flower (animal/plant). Next I liked the uniformity and cluster/fruit size of the plant. From lack of splitting or imperfections, besides the slight BER, I guessed it would probably be a bit thick skinned. Lack of flavor...is the GMO tomato to take the place/blame of the hybrids? LOL. Never delving into the breeding realm, I thought " I'd cross it with a relatively well liked for flavor/ production like 'sweet million' and triple crop and see where that goes next year. Personal note about GMO... I've only grown about 100 varieties of tomatoes and have about...6000+ to go so I can probably go without it as a passion but would try as a novelty. So many things are killing us off ( besides ourselves) that it would be pretty hard to say if any GMO specifically is the cause of the end of mankind unless everyone who tried one drops dead soon after... I agree with you on one thing...let those who are younger than my 69 years take up the pro/con banner. Thanks again for sharing. Happy Gardening Brent.

It does grow well and I read where they actually bred the tomato from 3 cultivars over 10 years. My guess is that they had to select for color first and the rest filled in afterwards. I do that sometimes with my parthenocarpic varieties. I've just decided to reduce all my lines and focus on a few that are the most ideal so I understand the compromises for the end product mindset. For crossing Empress with another line, I've considered it. Maybe over the winter.

Since the tomatoes get the anthocyanin on ripening, do uou think we need to let the tomatoes ripen on the plant? Supposedly, the tomatoes have a long shelf life, going bad on the plant shouldn't be a problem. I've also not seen any cracking or blossom end rot.
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 12 күн бұрын
The answer directly is yes if you want. Most of them, I let ripen on the plant. I don't have much bug or bird issues so I can. However, ripening on the counter affords the same anthos as ripening on the plant. The reason is because once the fruit begins producing ethylene to start the ripening process (any color) while on the plant, a membrane seals off the tomato. The tomato fruit itself (not the plant) uses the ethylene to ripen the fruit. So, leave on or off, doesn't matter. If you look at my video, I show one of the fruits having BER. It was rampant in my garden (my fault) so it wasn't the only one. After I corrected the deficiency, I don't see cracking or BER on it. The skin is a bit thick too which I didn't comment on.

I am north of you in the same state. To me, it tastes very subdued in sweetness and acidity. The color changes from green to bronze then to a dark purple with occasional flecks. of orange. The plants are vigorous, but do have early blight. I had ten seedlings and all survived, but only four of the ten had two cotyledons. One had no cotyledons but, somehow, still managed to survive. Please correct me if I am incorrect, but it was my understanding that you can use the purple tomato for breeding, but the same terms apply to all prodigny. I do plan on some crosses for my own use.

Directly from their site under "FAQs": By purchasing NHP Purple Tomato seeds, I accept the following conditions: - Seeds, fruit and plant material are only allowed in the USA. - The seeds are a patented variety and are sold to enjoy in your home garden and with your local community. - No sales of fruit, seeds or plants are permitted in this agreement, including any derived varieties. - These seeds come with no warranties. From me: A "derived variety" is breeding with it and then using it to make a profit by sales or any other way. It doesn't matter if you purchase from them or not. If it's patented, and anyone breaches the patent, they will be found liable in court. In order to get the patent, they had to map the genetics. Doing that allows them to take material from any plant and check it's genetics. From there, they can tell if the snapdragon genes are in the plant. Any bred offspring will have the genes if that color appears. At that point, liable. I know these things because I'm in the process of attempting a patent on my pat-b parthenocarpy. Now, if you can ensure the genetics are not "released" by your efforts, then you'll be safe, but if they track it back to you as the source, you could be found liable. An example would be a family member or a friend you gave a ripe tomato to and they did something with it. All that said, I can imagine that it will be used extensively by so many people, it would not be in their interest to track it all down. It happens all the time with people breeding with patented hybrids from seed companies. Final note is a patent lasts for 20 years so after that, it's fair play. And, this is why most major Ag sells hybrids. They can keep you buying their seed forever. All they have to do is keep the two lines used to make the hybrid secret/restricted to only their use.

Hi, thank you for the information shared. I followed your procedure for making antifungal at home, I would like to know how I should use it, do I spray it on the microgreens seeds after I spray the water? How long? Until when does the seed start to germinate? Lately it seems that the sunflower seeds become moldy after a few days of placing them (after a 8 hour soak + a few days of germination) in the container with the coconut fibre, they develop a fuzz that looks like the beginnings of mould, and last time they rotted the roots during growth. Could it be that the seeds purchased are contaminated or old, or something similar? Thank you for your attention, greetings from Italy.
@C3Voyage

I bleach-treat my sunflower seeds. 1 part 5% household bleach, 5 parts water, add to sunflowers in container and shake vigorously. After two minutes, drain and rinse well. This kills the fungus on the seed coating. Next, I spray the Superantifungal daily for about 5 days. The way I grow, IHG, isn't the way you're growing. I use an aerated water culture so no spraying water from the top. I also use a dome for the first few days. All of it helps with fungus too. Best.

@@derekgore1268 If I ever get my greenhouse rebuilt, I plan to bring FAWN back, slightly different.

Nice walk thru garden tour. Very jealous this year! Looks like that overhead trellising is working out great. Always hated to be trampling through vines on the ground looking for veggies. The peppers you showed at about 8:30 mark reminded me of one I grew in previous years 'Slovana". Nice size and production with thick walls. I use it as a bell replacement for fresh eating and stewing. As always, Happy Gardening.

Peter, buddy, I have trampled. It's not fun. :O) I had to look up Slovana and they do look very similar. In my reading, it says Slovana turns from light green to a pale yellow color at maturity. But, I saw one seed site that showed a red one. I guess you can tell me. As you may have seen Terzetto Bella turns from very light greenish-yellow to a candy-apple red color at maturity and it's very sweet. Well, I think so. I need to brix it. If you want to some seed, hit me via email at the end of the year and I'll send you some. I'd ask that you not grow it to save and distribute the seed, but only for personal use. I only do this with people I trust so there you go. It's not open pollinated yet, but getting close in consistency.

@@C3Voyage Slovana for me usually ripens at the yellow stage. Another hybrid called Gypsy goes from white thru to red...slightly smaller fruit. The other, and I'll just call it eastern European type/style pepper is a Hungarian one that pushes all the buttons for fresh eating, cooking/stewing and eventual drying into a Sweet paprika is Called 'feher Ozon'... "(white Heaven) The last would be my go to if I could only have one to grow because ...well, because lol.

@@petersoos498 I looked up the peppers you mentioned. Very nice looking ones. I think Gypsy is the closest to Mariachi. Mariachi is the cultivar I dehybridized to make Calibry (California Bryan). Calibry is one of the parents to Terzetto Bella. The other was Lipstick. Anyway, if you watched the video, probably redundant info, eh? Later on, I trialed Calibry against it's originator Mariachi and Calibry was more productive and a bit hotter. That worked out great for me. Your last pepper is available here in the states. Your last pepper I thought would be difficult to find, but there's a few sellers in the US.
