BSR/Berlin Stadtreingung, (Berlin City Cleaning) is responsible for handling residential waste in the city. Watch one of their newest units tackle a trash (restmüll) route in Berlin.
After seeing some of the first Freightliner Econic chassis in North America, it was a real treat to catch a Mercedes Econic on its home turf in Germany. Between the near-silent electric drivetrain and the impressive turning radius from the rear-steer axle, this machine was a true culture shock.
The Faun Variopress body is as far as you can get from North America. With automatic bin lifters, hopper curtains, push button controls and tons of proxy switches, this thing screams German engineering. From what I read on Faun's website, this body is especially designed for an Econic electric chassis: "A battery-electric chassis with hydrogen fuel cell as a range extender for the most diverse application." But it's not clear what the battery range is without kicking on the hydrogen power. You can read more on their website here:

This is pretty cool! I've always wondered why the rear steer axle hasn't taken off more in America, especially in the tighter West Coast cities. The rear loaders outside of North America always seem more high tech and are always fun to watch. Bet the crew also likes controls on both sides of the truck. Hope to see more from Europe!

Thanks! It’s funny how these bodies have virtually nothing in common with their American counterparts. Even the East-Coast style rear loaders that work in denser routes look nothing like this. This truck’s functions are as “automated” it gets without having an actual ASL. Although I did see the City of Vienna orders these bodies with a dead-man style lever to control the lifter, much more American, I didn’t get a video of that. The turning radius on these is insane. I’ve seen them make u-turns in busy intersections that would be suicide in an American truck. One of these chassis with an ASL could easily swing through the coul-de-sacs of say, Clairemont without ever reversing. Sadly this was the only full length video I got on the continent :( Thanks for checking it out!

Pretty much all of this technology was developed in Germany, France (mostly by Faun, Zoeller and HN-Schörling) and in the Netherlands (Geesink and Norba) from the 1970s onwards and is now exported worldwide. IIRC the rear loaders in the US were developed with a low loading height in mind for manual pickup, which isn't a problem with this almost fully automated system. It does, however, present an issue when picking up bulky waste. For this purpose, the entire loading system can be removed from the rear or other models of truck more akin to the US ones are used. In my home town we used to have Faun Powerpress for this, which is the European version of the Heil Formula 5000, but now they also use the multi purpose Variopress trucks as the amount of bulky waste has been reduced massively.

I think they may be instructed to leave the bin in the hopper for safety reasons. In the US some trash companies prohibit employees from entering the hopper of an automated side loader for any reason, I can see that logic applying here. Thanks!! Not a lot of angles available on this type of route but I tried to make it work. The helper was telling me that the driver’s English wasn’t great, but the driver did his best to answer my questions after they finished. Super nice guys

@@trashmonster26 good point. I hate when people compare European trucks to Americans ones. The collection systems, roads, bins, laws are so vastly different that you simply can‘t compare them. Americans trucks work well in America and European trucks work well in Europe haha Now using the truck in the video on a American suburban garbage run with extra waste allowed would be a nightmare while using a American truck with low level manual lifters and a two stage packer in a dense European city would be just as much of a nightmare Yes American trucks are sometimes more simple than European ones and not packed with as much tech but isn‘t neccessarly a bad thing in my opinion

@laurin4339
@laurin4339 Жыл бұрын
Berlin is pretty weird when it come to collection frequency as it depends on the area you live in. In some more dense areas they offer biweekly, weekly and fortnightly collections for regular trash and fortnightly for garden waste while in more suburban areas, they offer weekly and fortnightly trash pick up but weekly garden waste collection

Couldn’t have said it better myself. What’s interesting is that you won’t find a city in Central Europe (at least, I didn’t) that has single stream recycling. And paper/containers/glass/food waste is usually picked up on separate days. From what I saw in Berlin, the food waste participation could be better but it opened my eyes to what recycling could look like in North America.
@laurin4339
@laurin4339 Жыл бұрын
@@trashmonster26 I live in Germany so I know exactly what you‘re talking about haha Yep no single stream recycling in most of mainland Europe, I‘m pretty sure in Germany single stream recycling is actually forbidden by law. Nearly all German cities and councils have a recycling bin for plastic, foil and metal and a second one for cardboard and paper aswell as communal bins for glass which is sorted into three different colours to ensure high recycling quality. I know Berlin actually offers glass bins for big apartment complexes however that‘s unusual for Germany. Usually you have to bring your glass to a communal drop off point. I‘ve been in quite a few European countries and from what I‘ve seen, the only country that has widespread single stream recycling is France (however they too collect glass seperatly) and the British Isles, all other countries I‘ve been too including Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands all have dual/triple stream recycling. Definitely a stark contrast to the US and Australia where single stream recycling is basically the norm (excluding Oregon of course haha). Concerning food waste, in these dense areas food waste participation is usually quite low, however in the more suburban areas they usually have a higher recycling rate for food waste. Europe isn‘t perfect when it comes to waste diversion but I do feel like our system in Germany and most other countries in Europe works better simply because both glass and paper is collected seperatly meaning the quality of both is many times higher than in a single stream recycling system. Single stream recycling really destroys the quality of the paper and cardboard collected

@@trashmonster26 I don’t know a ton about Europe, although I know about Amsterdam suburbs, Antwerpen in Belgium, and Paris. Antwerpe was 4 streams w/ payt trash AND bottles. Unlimited paper and yard/food. All once a week. Although glass had to be brought to a drop off. Even deep in the inner city. Amsterdam suburbs when I was there they had bins for food/yard and trash. Each barrel rotated a week. So either trash or yard each week. Recycles had to be taken to the recycle center. Paris weekly glass, twice a week mixed recycle, and daily trash. Good system.

@@ct_refuse I never made it that far west. But every city I visited had a system like you describe that would be considered incredibly strict and ambitious in the United States. I saw pay as you throw bags for aluminum cans in Vienna, glass drop offs all over Germany, and Ljubljana Slovenia had underground bins collected by an automated side loader that could only be opened by local residents who scanned a key card.

@@trashmonster26 It's usually mandated for safety reasons that two workers handle one 1100L bin. As this type of waste is "Restmüll", i.e. all non-recycleable wastes (although lots of recycleables still end up in there!), it is usually much denser than regular municipal solid waste, and those bins may weigh around half a ton if full. Mishandling or slipping may easily cause injuries with these weights.

In Germany bins are usually handed out by the waste collection company. In many municipalities extra bins for paper/cardboard waste are free of charge and extra recycle is picked up in bags. Those bins are standardized and always compatible with the lifting mechanism. They're used in almost all of Europe, Australia, the Middle East and South Africa.
