my 90 year old granma loved it. She was wide eyed when Luffy first extended his arm to hit Alvida, and at the part where Nami is nagging Luffy for letting Zoro fight Mihawk, she told me, with a very serious face "Sometimes you gotta let boys be boys, so they can become men, but you cannot blame her bcs she is not a mom" I was flabbergasted by her words of wisdom since she has gone a bit senile as of late, but the show had her snappy and sharp, meaning it grabbed her attention fully. I will never be able to thank them enough for this moment I shared with her.

i think it's the same for men and women or kids in general. you have to let them make their own decisions and their own mistakes so they can be their own person at some point. they is a a japanese saying: "if you love your child, let them embark on their own journey." (the original text probably meant an actual trip and not a metaphorical one... but of course maybe also mean a metaphorical one if you like to interpret it like that...)

While at the same time it doesn't FORCE goofiness that wouldn't work in LA. Like Usopp's nose or Sanji's eyebrow, or Luffy's aloof nature. Trying to be TOO much like the anime is also an issue, they somehow managed to capture the essence of One Piece without being a cringefest.

The thing is Japanese style sword fight shouldn't be this acrobatic. Japanese swords are very long and they usually hang cases on the side. Chinese martial arts characters on the other hand usually carry swords which are shorter in one hand and toss the case away or give it to someone to hold to fight.

I had the same thought Connor did, that this might be too weird for normies. BUT, I then had a similar experience to Garnt, where I was able to get two normie friends of mine invested in the show. Like, glued to the screen invested. I think that anime fans see cringe where normies don't, and vice versa. For example, Luffy constantly talking about his goal comes off as cheesy to someone who watches a lot of shonen and is familiar with that trope, but it might just seem like a unique character trait to someone who isn't as steeped in the genre.
@chuckbatmangaming
@chuckbatmangaming 10 ай бұрын
I think that's very true about Luffy, Western live-action shows are full of jaded protagonists with a chip on their shoulder, so plop an optimistic goofy shonen main character like Luffy into that kind of show and you've got something really fresh and different. It works even better because there are other characters, mainly Nami and Zorro, who fill that "jaded stoic badass with a chip on their shoulder" role and you get to watch them slowly come around to Luffy's way of thinking, just as the audience would

The show is done so well that it stands alone on it’s own. I was shocked that people I couldn’t get to watch anime were watching this on their own volition. The power of a successful or viral Netflix show is crazy! I love how unashamed everyone is and how diverse the cast is. I have little to no familiarity with the anime or manga. But it's honestly refreshing to see a live-action nerdy property that's just unapologetically silly and over the top. Especially after the abundance of meta 'Whedon-esque' humor in nerdy movies this past decade (e.g. "Erm... That sounded better in my head." "Well, THAT just happened!") that always need to make sure that the audience knows that the movie also cynically sees itself as silly. It's nice to see a show that doesn't feel like it has to justify it's silliness with a wink and nod to the audience and instead proudly say "Yeah, this shit is goofy and ridiculous. Watch it, or don't." I see characters like Merry who styled himself like a ram, or that one navy who has a mouse ears hat and whiskers, and was pleasantly surprised to see everyone taking them seriously, with no character taking cheap digs at their appearance. Really allows me to be more immersed and just go "Yep, this is probably just a normal thing in this crazy fantasy world."

There are live-action Sonic MOVIES and therefore they have the budget and whole composition built to fit the CG characters specifically. How many consistently present CG characters that interact with the environment do you see in live-action shows? Every second active on screen they bleed money. Also the way you compare implied they'd actually make a fully "unreal" character like Sonic and not even have prosthetics and/or puppetry that are patched with CGI, which is far more laborious in the long-term.
@FrostFireTiger
@FrostFireTiger 11 ай бұрын
There's probably 4 distinct ways they can attempt to do Chopper. First and most expensive is to go full CGI and have a Detective Pikachu or Rocket Raccoon like character. Second is to have a full puppet like Baby Yoda. Doesn't look as realistic, but because of that it avoids the uncanny valley. Third option is a human kid in reindeer makeup VFX. The biggest issue with this one is that the actor will noticeably age throughout the seasons of the show and it would be much more noticeable than the aging of the young adult cast. Lastly a short person in a full costume like the Ewoks from Star wars. This works, but these tend to be the less emotive option and it makes it hard for the actor to stand out.

Live action MHA worries me because of how inherently Japanese it is. It's not set in a fantasy world, it's set in modern-ish day Japan, and Japanese national identity is a pretty big theme in the story. I don't see how a live action could work if it isn't set in Japan with a Japanese cast.

Most of the production timeline for se 01 was preproduction and writing. Makes a lot of sense since I can only imagine that time wws spent ironing out story beats and detailing changes from the manga with Oda as well as casting and artistic direction (ie. What will the sea kings look like? How accurate do we want the costumes to look like? Does finishing move callouts work? Etc.) The actual principle photography only took about 8 months and post production took ab a year. People complaining some things were changed "by Netflix" I think forgot that Oda was a writer for the show too. You really think that after 20+ years he doesn't have any regrets on how he wrote some stuff, doesn't want to make changes?

I seen a couple episodes of the anime when I was kid like 17 years ago and thought it was boring as hell and the power systems with the fruits were stupid. I watched the Netflix show and absolutely loved it. Hearing them all constantly talk about their dreams made me cry and remember what it was like to be a kid again. After I finished the show I started up the anime and am almost to episode 100 now. I still dislike a lot of the anime. But it’s also really enjoyable.

If they ever get to that point, having Dadan be played by a Mexican actress and just be a Mexican mom (completes with the chancla) to the three kids might be a way to explain it. Sabo would've left early, so his accent can be whatever since the Revolutionary Army is very diverse. Most likely he'll be British Ace will probably also be South American (I think Oda said he's Portuguese), but he also spent more time at sea than Luffy, amongst the very diverse White Beard pirates, so they could go either way

yeah just chalk that up to limited child acting abilities. Child Sanji didn't have grown up Sanjis accent either but that wasn't as jarring coz at least it was still a British one, just not the exact specific British one and honestly i doubt anyone unfamiliar with British dialects even noticed.

One thing I definitely realized from seeing normies react to having watched One Piece live action is how all of us who've been into One Piece go through like 1000 episodes of the anime and/or chapters of the Manga is that we are in our own bubble. We watch the live action adaptation from our own lens, being critical of how the live action compares to what we already assume One Piece was supposed to be like. We're not looking at what's there on its own merit. For example, Syrup Village and Baratie arcs dragged and Don Krieg was the most forgettable villain. What Netflix did with those were they altered arcs that anime and manga fans already had issue with, condensed them and made them more appealing for normies. By the way, in the anime, Syrup Village was 10 episodes, Baratie was 12, and Arlong Park was 14 . Certain unimportant characters were removed. It also wasn't 52 eps by the end, it was 44. They also presented the lore elements in a simpler way, like Warlords and the role of the Marines without heavy exposition, utilizing characters like Garp and Coby to do so (who even those who follow anime & manga wish they'd spent more time with). They also left in all of the elements that we all loved about One Piece, and that's the essence of the characters and the important elements of the story.

I'm an anime fan but never watched One Piece. At first I wasn't sure, but I've slowly seen its virtues and am surprised by how much I like it, just not as an anime fan. As a 90s kid, I slowly find myself seeing it as if it were a prequal within the Hook universe. The slightly janky but colourful set pieces, exagerrated characters and costumes, the Luffie actor imbues the energy of a young Robin Williams Peter Pan, and Garp carries the presence of Hoffman's Hook (the sense of disturbing a family accord, also taking an ally of the protagonist under their wing - Peter's son for Hook, and Koby for Luffie). Zoro also plays off of Luffie like Rufio does Peter. You can feel the creative ways they've tried to realise such a colourful world with the modest means of our reality, and it's charming. Also, there's plenty pirating. As a millenial with a lot of nostalgic attachment to Hook, I just love all that.

I think, dare I be so bold to say this, One Piece (live action) will be the video series (show/movie) of the 20s. We had Harry Potter for the 2000s, MCU for the 10s, and (skipping over 2020 and 2021 from the pandemic) I think OP will be the main video series for the next decade to come.

@@ceshmate1953 I'm talking about what will be the best video (show/movie) from the 20s, which hasn't happened just yet since were in the 20s. While comparing it to what I would believe were the most popular HP in the 2000s, and the MCU in the 10s. My argument here is that OP will take the spot for the best and most popular video (show/movie) for this decade, not best show or movie that had just a couple years and a few season like whatever other shows or movies might have, I'm referring to the entire next 8-10ish years and what video (show/movie) stands out the most during that time by being the best and most popular.

This show had a low budget when you compare it to other contemporary streaming shows. They did decent and I can only see them getting better as long as they get bigger budgets, maybe we'll see an alternate story direction based from one of the prior times Oda thought of ending it. Also the anime was paced really well early on until it started getting into marinford saga, sadly.

Uhhh, it had a higher budget per episode than Game of Thrones ever did. What on earth are we comparing it to where we can say "low budget"?? All the Marvel stuff? Rings of Power? The vast majority of streaming shows are not as expensive as One Piece was, everything above it is either Disney or Apple money.
