I started joining rewards programs with the Marriott and Hilton hotels. I'm so glad I did. I have gotten a lot of points and free stays. I plan on flying again (first time in 16 years) so I have already signed up for Delta and Southwest Airlines. I can't wait to fly again. Thanks for the video.

This is a good travel topic! I've always wondered about traveling with points and how people can save a lot of money doing it. Travel rewards credit cards are another thing! There's a science to it and it seems so confusing! I really appreciate how your videos are short and straight to the point, but I hope you put up a long video for the next one! I really value your advice. Thanks for the awesome tips!

I would recommend being member with one airline in each of the three alliances: One World, Star Alliance and Sky Team. For example, a person could belong to American Airlines (One World), Delta (Sky Team) and United (Star Alliance). Choose the airlines carefully and make sure they fly to destinations you want to visit.

You should make a video on what to do when your flight arrives long before you can check into your hotel. E.g. flight arrives in Tokyo from Atlanta at 8am, hotel check in doesn't start until 3pm. What do you do with your luggage? Is there ways to check in early without booking the night before? Help!

Sonia, I have belonged to loyalty programs for hotels and airlines for many years, flying out of Boston. I have moved to Washington DC and now use US Airways for business trips in my region. I have always tried to use United for long flights (and I have a Mileage Plus card) for vacations or conferences - they paid for my flight to France for two weeks last fall! Now that US Airways has been merged with American I am tempted to use them for the long haul flights now, but I LOVE United! What do you suggest?

What if my whole family goes on holiday and I pay for it, would ALL the miles get added to my account or just the miles specific to me?
@watvid1
@watvid1 9 жыл бұрын
And if it's all of them, can I just stand outside a travel agency and offer to pay the flights for strangers in return for cash thereby increasing my miles? XD
@ESUSAMEX
@ESUSAMEX 9 жыл бұрын
If you pay for your entire family's trip with an airline credit card, then you will earn the miles or points. For example, If you spend $5,000, you'll earn 5,000 miles/points because you put the entire bill on YOUR credit card. To earn miles for the actual flight just give your frequently flyer number to the airline at check- in and keep the boarding passes. You'll only earn miles/points if you are flying. Each family member will need his or her own frequent flyer account to earn miles while flying. Every time a family member or friend needs to travel somewhere, needs gas or goes shopping, I pay for it with my airline credit card and they pay me back in cash. Then I pay my credit card bill. Sometimes I have earned 20,000 a month by doing this. I earn even more during the Christmas holiday. Between all my frequent flyer programs, I have about 500,000 miles/points. I know a guy who has more than a million miles because he flies weekly from NYC to CA and FL No. You could not stand outside a travel agent and pay for everyone's trip because most travel agents would not allow it. Moreover, sometimes it is necessary to present the credit card used to buy the airline ticket at check-in. This is done to prevent fraud from a stolen credit card.

@franug

Yes. For example, British Airways, Iberia, Finnair and AirBerlin are part of Oneworld, so you earn miles by flying with them in Europe that can then be used to purchase tickets in any of those. That being said, Europe has awesome low-cost airlines that are the envy of the world (for real), and I dunno if those types of airlines have reward programs.

This is only true if you fly frequently. If you foresee that you will travel a lot in the future wether for business or pleasure then loyalty programs make sense. If it is a one time thing or your travels are 5 years apart or more then it wont make financial sense. Be sure to do the math first to determine if it is right for you.

Credit cards are a bad idea, the reward points aren't worth the extra fees ... ever!

Dylan's Things I wouldn't say "ever." If you carry a balance, you'll wipe out any savings in very short order. If your perks are subject to expiration, you should be sure that you'll use them, and do some detective work to make sure it's a good deal. For example, I have a specific airline's card, and it has a $99 annual fee. I get thousands of miles each year, but what really makes it a winner is that I also get a discounted companion fare each year; if I buy a flight on their airline at regular price, I can get a second for that same date and itinerary for $99 plus taxes. If I don't use it, I lose it, so that's money down the drain. If I use it on a domestic flight, I save enough to cover the annual fee, maybe a bit more. For an expensive flight like Alaska, Hawaii, or Mexico, I save about $400 (compared to the cheapest available flight, not just the cheapest on that airline), which is more than enough to justify the annual fee.
@ZodiacKillers
@ZodiacKillers 9 жыл бұрын
its more so the annual fees + the interest rate comparably. The ACCC (australian consumer competition commission) said no reward credit cards are worth the extra fees and higher interest when compared

I got a credit card February 2014 that earns me rewards dollars through the airline I use most. It has a $99 a year fee. So far I have cashed in $1040 off the flights I have taken and have another $138 cash to use on towards my next booking. Annually you also get a $99 companion flight anywhere in Canada and the US (excluding Hawaii) so book a full price flight and your companion comes for $99. I used my flight last year for one of my kids and it was $1000 for $99. I now have another $99 flight waiting to be redeemed. Saved me $900. I never use my debit card or cash anymore, everything goes on my card to earn cash off my next flight. I don't care what the interest is as I pay it off each month. I'd say my rewards points are well worth the fee.
@ZodiacKillers

I refer you again to the ACCC. It is in NO circumstances worth it
