Correcting a bit of confusion there around @16:20 ; Colombus did not call Santo Domingo as Isabela first. La Isabela is in the Puerto Plata province. That was the first stable Spanish settlement and town in the Americas established in December 1493. The site is 42 km west of the city of Puerto Plata, adjacent to the village of El Castillo. The area now forms a National Historic Park. Hunger and disease led to mutiny, and a group of settlers, led by Bernal de Pisa, attempted to capture and make off with several ships and go back to Spain. La Isabela barely survived until 1496 when Columbus decided to abandon it in favor of a new settlement founded in 1498 called Nueva Isabela, and soon renamed Santo Domingo. Also the discovery of gold in 1499 within the cordillera central, and the resultant mining boom, meant Isabela was depopulated by 1500.

You were eating a Pastel en ojas usually will come wrapped with a plantain’s tree leaf, and the other dish was Mangu , normally consumed at breakfast time, Mofongo is dryer with pork chunks or other meats, fun fact.. Mofongo originated in Puerto Rico but it is super popular in DR
@cristiandiaz63336 ай бұрын
Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban cuisines have a lot of dishes in common but each country might have a different name for them. So many dishes originated simultaneously on all tree islands due to colonization and have the same mix of people and cultures. So you have a Puerto Rican that would say that Mofongo was invented in PR and a Cuban or Dominican would also say the same thing. However, I think Dominicans enjoy cooking more and are better at it. Puerto Rican also love cooking, but are second to Dominicans, and followed by Cubans. Nonetheless, we alll consider each other brothers and sisters in spite of our competitive nature when it comes to sports, especially in baseball (lol).

Hi Emily, I’m a Dominican woman who grew up in NYC and now I live in Europe. I just subscribed to your channel, I’m glad that you enjoyed your short cultural trip to Santo Domingo. Next time you visit the DR inform yourself well about the food so you don’t get served the wrong thing, the food is amazingly delicious, very flavorful. I’m sorry to tell you that you didn’t eat Mofongo, what you had was Mangú which is boiled plantain purée and the pastel en hojas are also delicious. Next time you visit try the real Mofongo at Adrian Tropical and try Sancocho. Blessings 🙏🏼🍀💕🇩🇴

Hey Emily , thank you for reacting to my country one thing g. The church which is the oldest church in the western hemisphere is not where Columbus remain are found currently . It’s where they were discovered . The remains are currently found in the Columbus lighthouse ( faro a colon) also I know other countries claim the remains of Columbus namely , ( Cuba and Spain) but Columbus the remains are in DR the ones in Spain are of his oldest son Diego.

Trujillo was fighting invations from haitians, he gave land to them for them to leave Dominicans territories but they fought the military men in the frontier and there was a killings fight between both groups. There is a history to blame him of killing many haitians, which it was a fight amount both. It is that his grandmother was haitian so it maybe an unfair blame, also our elders used to have talco de polvo from Spain because of the sweeting and the heat, and because of that they also blame him of being trying to whiter the race. Lot of our history is told by our enemy, the ones who massacre our people because of being Spaniards and their offspring criollos. Cristobal Colon was in the church under the santuario and the wood box has the initial inscribed.

According to the latest crime statistics, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica have low crime rates in the region. However, the Costa Rican government has been accused often of hiding their real or actual crime rate. The USA have been double checking and verifying crime rate in DR since many americans have been increasingly traveling and investing in the Dominican Republic.

Santo Domingo was plagued with Communists. That's why Balaguer and Trujillo killed that many people! the "Revolution" of 1960 was led by Francisco Caamano, who was a close friend of Castro's regime... In fact, the house where Raul Castro currently lives in today in Cuba was back then owned by Caamano. The Mirabal sisters were also part of the same revolutionary movement. I'm glad that things took the way they took because we were heavily influenced by Cuba we could actually be a communist country not many Dominicans know this.
