Great video. What did the ABV of your brew come out at? Do the home brewers brew high abv stuff and do they start with their own water or do the use RO or similar? That looked like a great place to visit although I would pass on the fish!
@TheApartmentBrewer
@TheApartmentBrewer Жыл бұрын
Thanks! They said it turned out at 6.5%, so not bad. In most of their brews I saw an abv of at least 5.5 but often higher. The brewers at least in lillehammer used their tap water because it's actually excellent brewing water.

Hey brother! I've been watching your videos, excellent work! You go into a ton of detail which is great. I had an interesting question, have you ever heard of anyone adding brewing salts to water to match a beer profile, but they don't use the water for beer? They just carbonate it and "taste test it"? I've been wondering if anyone has done that just to really break down the beer profile differences. I've made sparkling water before using a Topo Chico clone found on Reddit, and it seemed a bit weak on the mineral flavors. It made me wonder what an IPA or Oktoberfest water profile would taste like. Any thoughts? Cheers from Austin, Texas! 🍺
@TheApartmentBrewer
@TheApartmentBrewer Жыл бұрын
Never heard of that, but I have tasted the water prior to mashing in sometimes. Usually it has a very minerally character, almost like well water.

I have tried to make the christmas bock twice using a friends (from Norway) recipe, but it turned out tasting like model glue both times. I am researching this off flavour. This is usually from chlorinated water. We treated the water both times, and actually used different yeasts. In the recipe, all the spices etc are added in the boil. I am thinking we should NOT do this, and add the spices in the fermentor. Like a dry hop. Anyway, this is not really a question, just riffing out loud to help me think. Thanks for the awesome video!

Just brought this up a couple times. You know Water Chemistry and got me over a few hurdles. I have a little bag of Burton Water salts. Is it is gimmick? Can we brew Bass ale or Harp? It’s all the same area and all the same water. Just curious.
@TheApartmentBrewer
@TheApartmentBrewer Жыл бұрын
Definitely helps being out the classic minerally and bitter characters of those ales if you use them, but that's based on the historical profile for those beers. Even though they're in the same area, the water can vary significantly from place to place. It's kind of a gimmick but not completely wrong either haha

The name of the beer style "bock" ist derived from the German city of Einbeck where this style originates from, nothing to do with male goats.
@TheApartmentBrewer
@TheApartmentBrewer Жыл бұрын
It does actually. Einbeck sounds an awful lot like Ein Bock ("a goat") in the Bavarian accent. It didn't take long for the bock style to become synonymous with goats after that, hence why all the German bock brewers have goat imagery on their bottles and logos.

I was in Bergen, NO a few months ago and found it difficult to find good beer. The brewery on the harbor was not very good, IMHO. I finally found a very tasty beer at the hotel bar from local brewery 7 Fjell. I would ask bartenders about Kveik yeast and 90% had no idea what I was talking about. It was not until a colleague took me to Henrik øl og vinstove that I found some wonderful nordic brews and a bartender that knew of Kveik. Unfortunately, he had no Norwegian Farmhouse ales but I enjoyed a tasty wild ale from Lindheim Ølkompani called MARKENS GRØDE.
